    It's perfectly meaningless...

My New Years' resolution is to go through 365 different albums I've never heard before in one year. I don't know how far I'll get, but I'll make a valiant effort. Feel free to mute this thread while you're at it, or send me some albums I should hear. I'll take anything and everything.

    So, to start it off:

    Album 1/365

    1. "The Blue" - Really weird opening before the song breaks into a trudging sludge crawl. Cool way to do vocals. Starts to pick up the pace before slowing down again. It's very moody but I'm liking it a lot.
    2. "Tranquilized" - Another weird kinda song but with a more typical song structure. I love the vocals on here, they're weird but in a good way.
    3. "Cheap Vodka" - Really good riffs in this one. Kinda more wild but I like it.
    4. "Finger Paintings of the Insane" - Really morbid song with a lot of atmosphere going on. Some really twisted lyrics, too.
    5. "Jezebel" - Man these songs are like a melting pot of a lot of different metallic styles. I can hear Death, Carcass, and stuff like that in here (and you can tell where they inspired other bands too), and they do a great job of reconstructing this stuff to make it feel fresh.
    6. "Scream of the Butterfly" - Wow, I love this quieter stuff. This might be my favorite song yet. I love the way the lyrics mesh with the music, and despite how twisted this all is, it's somehow beautiful at the same time.
    7. "Dr. Suess Is Dead" - It's like taking all the weird things they've been doing and turning it to 11. Whew.
    8. "Dope Fiend" - Another crazy but good song.
    9. "Toubabo Koomi" - So much fucking venom, it's insane.
    10. "God Machine" - Yet another really twisted, insane song.
    11. "The Mortician's Flame" - See above.
    12. "What Color Is Death" - A really storming, moving, faster paced song that's got somewhere to get to and will slay everything alongside it. Whew.
    13. "The Bones of Baby Dolls" - Really nice quiet acoustic stuff at the beginning, and it keeps the instrument but builds up a bit. These guys know how to do heavy, but damn, their quieter songs are awesome, too.
    14. "Cassie Eats Cockroaches" - Great closer.
What an album. It's the most twisted thing I've ever heard and despite its length, it keeps the interest at all times. I hope the other stuff I hear this year will be able to match it. This could become a favorite overtime.

Never heard the album, but "Dr. Seuss Is Dead" stands out to me as a particularly unsettling title.

I will make sure you follow through with your resolution. Failure to do so will result in punishment*

But for album recommendations... Anything by Dream Theater. Or Tool...

    * = Haven’t decided on how to punish Diesel yet.

Yep. The lyrics are fucking insane, it's like dark humor taken to the next level. I dunno if it's your thing or not, because it's a sludge metal record with bits of doom and death metal thrown in, but maybe you'd like it.

    Got it.

I can think of several things, but they'd likely violate some aspects of the forum's rules, so I won't bring them up.

    You bastard!

Do it. I will fight back harder than a wolverine up against a buzz saw.

Sounds interesting. Turns out I don't know if it's my thing either, but I'll give it a listen either way. I'll post my thoughts on it here when I do.

I'm gonna try to get a headstart here since I don't know what to expect as life hits me. My friend and I decided to switch favorite artists this year: he'll do Maiden, and I'll do Nightwish. So, as a part of the 365 albums goal, let's start that.

    Albums 2/365

    1. "Elvenpath" - I'm loving this opening riff and stuff, it's awesome. Tarja is a great vocalist, obviously, and she does such a great job here. Pretty good way to open a career; not everything in this song works but a lot of it does... it's pretty cool. 8/10
    2. "Beauty and the Beast" - Another pretty good opening, though not as good as in the previous song. I like this change-up though. I'm not as big on Tuomas as a vocalist (kinda reminds me of the Muppets, TBH, which isn't bad but doesn't necessarily fit this song). Another change-up leads to a pretty cool solo piece before Tarja does a nice piece there. Cool ending. This song is a bit of a mish-mash but I like a good lot of it. Not as good as the first song, though. 7/10
    3. "The Carpenter" - Cool opening, again. Interesting verse, but damn this chorus piece is a pretty awesome. Weird vocals but it works IMO. Weird flute(?) section. Some better vocals in the chorus would push this to a 9, but it's a solid 8/10 as it is.
    4. "Astral Romance" - Another cool opening leading to a pretty awesome verse. Tarja's stuff is still great, but again, I'm not solid on Tuomas. Parts of this instrumental section remind me of Maiden. It's a good song with nothing that stands out greatly. 7/10
    5. "Angels Fall First" - Nice acoustic intro. Some really emotional vocals throughout. Ending piece is pretty cool. Again, it's a good song but not quite outstanding. 7/10
    6. "Tutankhamen" - Another great opening, very nice Egyptian feel to it. Decent verse, but I like that fast vocal piece more - the chorus, I guess. Pretty cool stuff throughout, I like it. 8/10
    7. "Nymphomaniac Fantasia" - Interesting opening, but not one I particularly care for. I like the build-up here though after the minute mark. It's pretty cool. Cool verse, awesome high note at the end of it. Pretty great song, but it ended too soon IMO. Still, it's quite strong. 8/10
    8. "Know Why The Nightingale Sings" - Another great opening, another strong verse, love the instrumental section. In fact, there's nothing bad about this song at all; it's the best one I've heard on here so far. 9/10
    9. "Lappi (Lapland)" - Part I is good but not outstanding, though I love that the lyrics are in Finnish. Part II is a little more interesting, very atmospheric stuff. Part III is better still, I like the opening here. Some epic stuff throughout, though I can't say that everything here is perfect. Part IV is pretty nice. As a whole song though, this may be the weakest here. It's nine minutes long and yet I don't think they do enough in that span of time. Still, Part IV is a cool closer. 6/10
This is a really solid debut album. Some parts work better than others, but as a whole it's nice and from the looks of it, the next few albums will be even better. I'm excited.

  15. If you Haven't Heard Scorpions' early albums (Fly to the rainbow, In Trance, Virgin Killer, Taken By Force and Lovedrive) as well as Tokyo Tapes; they are very strong albums. All Zeppelin Albums, Halestorm's 2nd album and Vicious. And all 5 Alter Bridge studio albums along with their live album Live At Royal Albert Hall

    1. Have I properly listened to the full album? [Know under 30% of album]

    2. Does the album need a re-listen

    3. Classic album lists

    4. Preference given to albums I own a hard copy of but have yet to listen to fully.

    5. Bands which I am likely going to see on Tour will have priority seeing as I want to know more material for the show.

I own every Zep album except for the last three (Presence, ITTOD, and Coda) so this would be a good chance to knock those out as well. Thanks for the other suggestions.
  17. No problem, I also suggest the 70s era of Queen as there is so many great hidden gems throughout that I keep on discovering. Oh and Whitesnake 1987 and the first 3 Rainbow Records
