The Future Past tour 2023

I think folks are overthinking this one. It’s an homage to Somewhere in Time and they already opened with Senjutsu. They’re probably going to open with the song that opened the original Somewhere in Time tour.
...if they can play it decently. Which I have reasonable doubts about. It's one of the hardest 3 (if not the hardest) songs to play live from their catalogue stamina-wise. 6 minutes and 30 seconds of full throtle.

And remeber, Rod has stated that the song sounded like shit on the album tour live. Imagine it with 71 years old Nicko and 65 years old Bruce. Just can't see it. It doesn't add up.

Just listen to that bass drum. Stratego and Where Eagles Dare are a walk in the park compared to this.

It's one of the hardest songs to play live from their catalogue for sure, but a decent performance should be achievable. I have faith. I'm not worried about Bruce in that regard.

The parts of the song that didn't sound ''amazing'' live in 1986 were the guitar harmonies (now we have 3 guitars), the pre-chorus, and the ''oh-ohs'' in the chorus. Still, I think it sounded very good:

I will say that this is one of the less predictable setlists in terms of what new songs we’ll get. I remember in the lead up to TBOS and TFF tours it felt like we had a good idea of what was going to get played. There were clear cut picks for epics on both albums, plus singles and album openers. Now that they’ve already played the three obvious choices, it’s all up in the air. I can see pretty much anything on the album getting included.

Helped by the fact that we can pretty safely say it's gonna be five from Senjutsu and five from Somewhere in Time. A few years ago a tour with any sort of focus on SiT would've been unthinkable, never ever gonna happen. Now we're left to speculate what they'll actually play and even that's not nearly as clear cut with Steve apparently saying he thinks they should at least rehearse Loneliness and see if it works.

A song that they played once!

In 1986!

Madness.

Plus the fact that they at first wanted to play the whole thing live, AMOLAD-style, shows that each and every song is a contender. And I’ve said it before, but simplifying or slowing down some of the SiT songs is okay with me. Sure, a little bit of the original spark may be gone, but those songs could sound really powerful at more conservative tempos.

They're going to slow songs down, that's just where we're at with Maiden. To even announce a tour like this in the first place tells me that they're more interested in giving the fans what they want even if it means a slowed down or even possibly subpar version of the song. But this is what people have been clamoring for.

And you know what? “Aces High” may not have been quite as awesome at the end of the show as opposed to the start of it, but it was kinda cool to be stuck in that moment for longer, more time to soak up that Spitfire spectacle.

I've said it before, but I'd really love them to bring in Joe Lazarus to at least sub in on the faster songs. Dude can play them great and he's young and there's already multiple videos of him playing along to the live version of some of Maiden's hardest songs, including Caught Somewhere in Time. Then let Nicko take over on stuff like The Parchment and some of the heavier/slower songs. And Nicko can still kill it in the studio since he can take a breather as well. But no reason to push the faster songs into this compromise of not being able to play them 100% as intended.

Joe representing Future and Nicko, Past...

I think it will be the parchment, the long instrumental section has live written all over it, basically plays the same role as Red And The Black did.

I'm not feeling it. I like the Parchment, but its vibe is completely different. While TRATB sounds almost triumphant at points, TP is more somber, serious and almost gloomy. It doesn't have that celebratory feel, neither are there that many sing along melodies in there compared to TRATB.

I'll be surprised if TP makes the setlist and I'm curious to see how it'll translate to live shows.

I always thought that the part starting with "The prodigal has returned / Give us our own revenge / With the power he learned / We will burn the same again" was one of the most triumphant bits of Maiden's discography.

But yes, I get your point... The Parchment certainly isn't an easy sing-along song. I really hope they play it, though, because imo it's maiden at it's best.

I wouldn't mind it. But I would like it to be more theatrical. Bruce in some sort of outfit, maybe pounding a drum above Nicko and a lot of pyro (beacons).
The thing I was most surprised about was just how much the performance was lacking in the theatricality department. I suppose the stage set for the Senjutsu world didn't help considering the platforms were rendered obsolete.
