Paul Di'Anno passes away, age 66

There is absolutely nothing punk musically whatsoever about anything on Maidens first 2 albums.

Never understood why people say this and always thought it was a lazy description just because Paul had short hair and was a bit of a geezer.
The debut has the production quality of a punk album and Paul had a yobbish attitude so there's that.

Musically, not so much except for maybe Sanctuary and Drifter.

I see Iron Maiden as pretty punk-y, mainly thanks to DiAnno. Killers less so and that was probably the reason why Paul left.

Musically there's nothing to do with punk on there, I can't imagine the Sex Pistols even being able to play Charlotte or Prowler, nevermind Phantom.

Paul liked punk, that was about it. Maybe there's a bit of shame and self loathing from metal fans because punk is "cool" and has "cred" whereas metal has neither, and therefore they wish there was a bit of punk on there, but there isn't.

The songs on the first two Maiden albums just don’t have anything punk about them in my opinion.

Punk mainly made up of bands that could barely play their instruments and would be lucky if they could write one memorable chord per album. They were mainly from working class backgrounds who wrote piss poor lyrics about stick it to the man and anti establishment themes about how they were so down trodden and how they need to rise up.

The energy people say is associated with punk music was more to hide the fact that most of the bands couldn’t really play, they just hit their instruments as hard and fast as they could and hoped no one would notice or care if they were actually playing a legible song.

What I’ve described above is mainly first wave punk. A few bands came along later in the second wave who could play and write.

Maiden was born during the first wave and their first 2 albums came out right when punk was in a boom. The songs maiden created told stories, had intricate and thought out playing. They were hard rock/heavy metal songs that had nothing to do with punks attitude or style.

Steve had said numerous times how much he hated punk music and wanted to be as far away as possible from it. On the 12 wasted years video he even says in an interview he turned down loads of record offers in the early days because labels wanted the band to cut their hair and change the sound to be more like punk.

The punk label only came about because of Paul. Paul had short hair and perhaps had a bit of a punk anti established attitude and was a fan of punk music but that’s it. I’ll maintain there is absolutely nothing musically that sounds remotely punk on the first two maiden albums. Not the production and not the energy and certainly not the song structures.

This is very kind on their side but I would've liked one or two words from Steve or Dave or Adrian, who's slightly more at ease with a "spokesperson" role. They were in the band in Paul's days after all.

By the way, I couldn't see the reference to Battlezone coming. Very nice speech.
Adrian made a post on Instagram. Steve was the one that spoke about Paul in the official account post.

If Dave addressed something on stage and spoke into a microphone, I would believe that the world would end in next 24 hours and run for cover.
