The Future Past tour 2023

I honestly thing Book of Souls Live Chapter and Nights of the Dead are not nearly as bad production-wise as they're made out to be. That said, this tour absolutely demands to have a proper Shirley produced live album AND video.
I really like TBOSLC, it was a hell of a tour and I think the album captures it pretty well. The audience sound is a bit strange but I do love that they pulled from multiple performances and didn’t do that stupid fade out they used on F666. The only thing that hurts the record is Bruce sounding like a damn chipmunk on the high notes, but he just had beaten cancer so I’m not gonna flame the guy for that. The fact that he sounds so good this year makes it even more bearable.

NOTDLOTBLIMC, on the other hand, just feels slapped together with little care for making a great quality product. From the edited album art to the awful audience noise to Bruce being sick and the mix being complete shallow mud with no depth whatsoever — it’s hard to believe that this was taken from the same tour that I saw them on, for the first time. When I saw them it was massive and epic and the sound would shake a cathedral. Then I pop in the album and it sounds like Mother Theresa taking a shit. Not the same experience. At all.

I have the album on CD. I’ll listen to it again sometime. Hell, I’ll buy the vinyl if I see it in a record store (even though I refused to originally the over the past two years). It’s Maiden. I love Maiden. They’re like, more than a favorite band, a core part of my life right now. But damn, that album just is not up to snuff. If I want to listen to a LOTB concert, I’m pulling up a bootleg on YouTube. Somehow a raw mix like that sounds better than the professionally mixed album that I actually have to pay money for. Wow.

And they definitely play songs faster this year than last year
They do and yet everyone still complains. Last year we all moaned that Nicko was too slow. Now Nicko is faster but not technical enough.

It's clear that Nicko was aware of those issues and chose this year to sacrifice technicality for tempo and I think he made the right decision. After all, his arthritis won't allow him to do both.

I'm personally glad that the songs are at the right speed and honestly don't care that he misses a few fills to achieve this.

It's just a shame that many others can't see the woods from the trees on this matter.

I also noticed on CSIT from sweden rock that he plays a lot of the bass drum triplets that he hasnt played earlier this tour

Apologies if someone pointed this out already, I just noticed on the backdrop for DOFP the numbers in the middle are dates the band formed and the dates when the SiT and Senjutsu albums were released.
Yep, I noticed this during the show as I inspected the backdrop.
By the way, is there good picture available anywhere of the backrop with dates?

Speaking about wasted potential I present the opposite case, a fantastic singer caught in a band that doesn't do him justice:

Eric Adams from Manowar. If you ignore their lyrics there are certainly songs that are great as far as the music is concerned. Eric is insanely talented and has delivered some of my absolute favorite performances in metal, but Manowar is just sooo goofy. It is what it is I guess, but just imagine him in a project with subject matter closer to what Maiden is doing for example.
Vocal wise Eric Adams is one of the very very very best. Bruce, Halford, Adams. It's a shame that his talent was not fully realised.

I jus hope they use some of these early recordings of Bruce from this tour where he still sounds great for any live release
Let's hope so. I think they will do a live release from various shows again and that's the best option now. They need Kevin Shirley for this job, although I like the sound of Live Chapter. Nights Of The Dead was a lazy work, only the drum sound/performance is good (overall not that bad, some good live versions, but how you choose to release a show that Bruce wasn't in top form for is beyond me). Live the sound was much better.

Speaking of recordings (photo from yesterday's video):

It's also about time for a great (and brand new!) live album cover again. This tour has the theme and the 2 Eddies to make it interesting. Or why not a double cover (like SJ) with each Eddie in a different setting - that would be something!

That's the usual director's corner. Where they switch between cameras for the screens. This is at every show.

Anyone going to the zurich show? I will be taking an 11 hour flight to go watch them since they totally forgot to visit Asia these days

Okay, stop.
Can we, for a moment, please agree that in terms of music, early Manowar were an outstanding band. I dare you to listen to Gates of Valhalla or Bridge of Death and tell me these songs are below Eric Adams' talent.
Why is everyone getting so hung up on the lyrics? There is more to music than that. There was amazing songwriting and playing in early Manowar, and just for the record, the lyrics as a whole weren't as cartoonish as they would become from Fighting the World onwards.

I really wish people would fucking listen to the music they are talking about every once in a while.

Lyrics are an important component of music. Just look at how much hate Quest For Fire gets for its lyrics, even though it features a stellar instrumental section in the middle. Manowar have produced a lot of great music, but as their career went on, the "fight sword metal brothers true" lyrics became more and more common and they are an active part of their image and how the band is promoted.
Some of their songs are favorites of mine to this day, but I simply prefer bands that produce more serious music (like Maiden), or bands who go all in on the joke and don't take themselves seriously at all (like Gloryhammer for example).

I don't think anyone is seriously trying to downplay the musicality of Manowar as a band. It simply feels, in my opinion, like a lot of wasted potential, because they could've easily been one of my favorite bands if they went a slightly different direction.

Having said all that, maybe a controversial opinion, but Eric Adam's high pitched screams (like in Hail And Kill) are by far the best in the entire industry. No disrespect to Halford and a lot of clearly talented Power Metal singers, but no one nails the aggressive and powerful tone as much as Eric.

Imo, Manowar was GREAT band. But after a series of wrong decisions by Joey, they declined very much. My message was, that Adams could be much more famous and recognised. I like all classic Manowar albums. I even included them in the list of my favorite bands. So there's no need to be rude. I am not fanboy. When I see that a band/performer could do better, I speak. Even if it's Maiden.
(Of course it's only my opinion)
