Napster..ok
Lulu, a side project of the band, laughing material, blunder, but it's not technically 100% Metallica
Newsted treatment and SKOM. I learned to appriciate what they've done with that documentary. I've watched it for the laughs for years, now I see it as a serious insight into the band no-one has ever done. I applaud Metallica for SKOM and in the end it's only pluses in my book. There are two parts to any human, you rarely get the other end in documentaries, meet and greets, its all polished, this is true, they are fucked up and not afraid to expose it.
Also Metallica has several advantages over Maiden whether you like it or not, the way they approach setlist and gigs is certainly better.
This Senjutsu thread has become a Metallica thread. LOL
I seriously like KEA, RTL and especially MOP, (oh and Garage days is fun)
I get bored with AJFA, I have no interest in listening to TBA, Load, ReLoad,
Death Magnetic is "by the by - somewhat mediocre" but ruined by all the audible clipping (an insult to anyone who pays money for that album)
St Anger is headache inducing and unlistenable. (The Drums, the jarring and repetitive tunes, the singing urgggh)
Hard wired is OK. Not really my thing, but good for a few spins. The videos are really good.
The above is just my opinion of course. I recognise that there are people that love TBA, Load and Reload and probably Hardwired too (They all seem to have a similar feel to me). There are people that love StAng (This is a completely unique album in the Metallica discography), and their are people that worship AJFA (These people tend to also like MOP, RTL and KEA).
Metallica was just a thrash band, but they broke into the mainstream, they won over a massive amount of fans and pulled people into Metal.
I have no problems with this, in fact, I think it is great that they have been a bridge to get more people into Heavy Metal as there is such a huge bias in the general public against metal hence it isn't played on general radio and is spoken negatively about even those people don't actually know what Metal is. Metallica don't have to be a thrash band.
I have no qualms about the Napster lawsuit. Selling music files was a large business and allowed bands to produce high quality albums, and often and sell their records and make money. Since all this stuff, we now have bands like Maiden and Metallica etc that don't produce albums very often. Create them on the cheap, and now sell headphones, beer, wine etc. The fans are worse off.
The SKOM movie, I thought was fantastic. It shows stuff that we would generally never know about. How a very successful band almost was torn apart. When I compare that to the Maiden movie Flight 666, well Flight 666 is pretty much just another live album. It isn't really showing us much about who Maiden is, or a slice of life of them. It is very much wrapped in cotton wool and bubble wrap.
I am really annoyed with Metallica for the "loudness" and the defending of the loudness of Death Magnetic.
I am annoyed with Metallica for how they treated Newstead and edited him out of AJFA.
I don't like that Metallica has this "macho" image and seem to work hard on that.
I don't like that Metallica seem to be a two man show (James and Lars) other band members seem rather irrelevant, and treated as such by James and Lars. That irks me.
I can't understand why Metallica are still so popular. (but this is really no big deal, I just can't understand it, I haven't liked much of what they have produced in the last 30 years)
I didn't like the S&M concert album. I don't think it suits their songs, but I appreciate that they tried something different. Metallica are definitely innovative. And I understand that there are many people that liked that album.
I appreciate Metallica for their innovation and variety. I appreciate them for drawing more people into Heavy metal, I appreciate their first three album, I think they are very good. I appreciate that they are the biggest selling Heavy Metal band ever.
But I don't want Maiden to be like Metallica or look to them for inspiration on anything.
