Coronavirus

Current state of research, which as any self-respecting scientist will tell you has not provided end results yet, is that the mortality rate is estimated to be around 0.7%. That is indeed higher than a typical seasonal flu, which is ca. 0.1%, but hardly 20-30 times higher. No clue where you have that number from, but I'd recommend using different sources. Even so, the absolute numbers don't sound as apocalyptic. This way of talking about it is exactly how panic and hysteria spread.

It's quite easy to count this at home. In Italy alone coronavirus killed more patients in two weeks than flu in more than two months.

Also:
Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected. //Official WHO page

Yes, but we have large national entities like Iran and the USA that are not aggressively counting the number of COVID-19 cases.

Mhm. Germany has 684 confirmed cases and not one fatality. Please excuse me if I'm not throwing myself out of the window in the face of this statistical ambiguity.

Let's not get started on toilet rolls. I'm off out this afternoon hunting for toilet rolls because the local shops have been cleared out.

That's why I'm glad we have Costco in Mexico.... I buy toilet paper once a year and do regular groceries every 40 days on average. I get few items every two weeks, but nothing essential, mainly fresh fruits and vegetables.

Italy is quarantining 16 million people in the north of the country now.

First two cases confirmed in Bulgaria. The country will be out of toilet paper in the next 24 hours.

A colleague of mine's mother has been hospitalized with coronavirus. He spent time with her a week ago, so now almost 50 people from the office are quarantined for a week. Including me. Joy.
I hope all this blows over soon and you're all okay. My work is making preparations for everyone to be able to work from home if necessary - a client's kid has apparently tested positive for the virus but so far it hasn't affected us directly. I wouldn't mind working from home for a few days but "self-isolation" sounds like a nightmare for a number of reasons.

I'm an introvert, but I'm also a nomad. I can't stand not leaving the house for two days in a row.

This exactly. I'm an introvert but I'm not antisocial. I like to go out and just wander around. Maybe we'd be allowed to do that if we did it at dead of night, when we wouldn't meet anyone - and disinfected all the door handles on our way past?
