Gas prices are really plummeting ... had to run out to the store this morning for a non-TP purchase, decided to fill the car up ... $1.09/gallon

It's 8.30 pm here in India. Just half an hour ago, the Prime Minister made a speech. He announced a nationwide curfew from 7 am to 9 pm on Sunday as a sort of pandemic drill.

He also asked everyone to stand by their window at 5 pm on Sunday and make noise in support of the people working in essential jobs. My poor sensitive ears...

Now that the US is a net exporter of oil, this is actually bad for your country's economy ... will this low oil price drive many of the US small-scale fracking fields out of business again?

It's a rule of thumb - if petrol prices plummet, it's meant to hurt the US. But US consumers usually don't think that far and are happy.

Yeah, it hurts oil and gas for sure .. no one makes money with prices that low. But once demand picks up it will go back up. Good for overall prices on other goods and good for consumers. Given the nature of what caused most of this (plus Iran/Russia not decreasing production) this, in the short term it might not be a bad thing overall

Meanwhile, it only took 6 days for new Slovenian minister of defence to be outed as an utter fool.

3 000 000 face masks order, that he was ensuring people was coming and was in transport, turned out to be a scam. Fucking LOL. We are lucky that Aleksander Čeferin sent us 400 000 masks via his friend, the owner of Alibaba.

Damn! That's sad and revolting.

What kept the thing from really escalating to absurd numbers here in Portugal was the awareness of the people and institutions themselves that in advance came out with measures the government and other elites didn't took (it was only yesterday they came out with deliberations that the majority of the population was already doing by their own initiative). Still we rest at a very perilous position. Things can either go one way or another: either infected cases keep rising to a borderline sustainable rate or on a much darker scenario get to the numbers of our neighbor Spain. The next days will be pivotal.

We could bust these out again

And now the minister of defence and minister of economy are sending two different messages. One said yesterday that the masks were paid and the second is saying that we are only paying after delivery.

Someone has made 1.5 million from this.

Policing that might be difficult.
He began the speech by urging people to not be lulled into a false sense of calm, and that the virus situation would likely get worse in the future. Based on the way he said it, the curfew is less of a preventive measure and more of a step towards creating a public mindset of taking the virus seriously.

But the masks don't stop people getting infected, so why bother?

Additional good news, if existing drugs can help put a dent in this, that would be fantastic, they have already gone through trials and all that good stuff.

U.S. researchers are looking at two generic prescription drugs to determine whether they could be effective in treating or preventing coronavirus.

Reuters reported that scientists at the University of Minnesota are testing two drugs, the malaria treatment drug hydroxychloroquine and the blood pressure drug losartan, to see whether either drug is effective in blocking the virus's reproductive processes.

“We are trying to leverage the science to see if we can do something in addition to minimizing contacts,” Dr. Jakub Tolar, dean of the University of Minnesota's medical school, told Reuters. “Results are likely in weeks, not months.”

The drugs, Tolar added, were relatively inexpensive to purchase as they are generic replacements for branded prescription drugs.

“We don’t need a multibillion-dollar investment. It is part of the beauty of this approach,” Tolar said.

President Trump also mentioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was going to approve their use to treat coronavirus patients.

Researchers say Losartan, an enzyme receptor, could prevent the virus from binding to host cells in the victim's body, possibly preventing further or future infections. Hydroxychloroquine, used to treat malaria in many countries, could possibly suppress the proteins that cause deadly inflammation in victims, according to Reuters.

A 1,500-patient trial began this week testing the use of hydroxychloroquine, according to the news service, while two trials testing the use of losartin are reportedly ongoing.
