Coronavirus

Infectologist Janez Tomažič today: Epidemies destroy sense of humanity first.

I would have expected a stronger response from the UK government seeing as the population at risk are much more likely to vote Tory than anything else!
Quite a crass thing to say. I'm not sure what more they can do. Boris is (for a change) listening to expert advice and proceeding cautiously subject to the guidance of the chief medical officer and science advisor.

The moron in charge here in the UK has said the following (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/12/uk-moves-to-delay-phase-of-coronavirus-plan):

Boris Johnson said:
It is going to spread further and I must level with you, I must level with the British public: many more families are going to lose loved ones before their time.

I must admit the last part of the sentence got me thinking. If you die from complications related to coronavirus you do it before your time? What happens if you die from another condition? Does that mean that you die at the right time?

Welp, NHL has suspended their season too. They noted that they share many arenas with the NBA so it is extremely possible a player will test positive any minute.

China numbers are now getting higher because people from outside of China are bringing this shit back to them.

Chinese numbers are stable. 15 new cases daily is rather a decline. There's a reason virus peaked so soon in China, in the middle of Chinese New Year. The controls were unprecedented and the people just followed, they still do. The controls are still extremely tight I don't see this thing getting bad anytime soon.

When Hubei was locked down there were about 1,000 infected in all China. It took Italy 12,000 to realise that. The other countries were quick to suspend flights to/from China (around 2,000 mark) but lost valuable time by watching China like if it was their problem, instead of preparing themselves.
I've spoken with some colleagues in Italy 2-3 weeks ago I was shocked by how lightly they have taken it. They were the first ones to ban flights to China, but this is just not enough.

Oh and about wearing masks. It's true that masks do not protect that much the individual. But if everybody's wearing a mask, this is a good protection for the society.

Not everyone agrees...

Of the four people in that article only one is completely scathing. The rest had mixed feelings and one even praised the Chief Medical Officer.

I think Boris is following the advice of the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Advisor. He's parroting the official NHS advice on hygiene and hasn't done anything mad like his buddy Donald. The CMO and CSA have all the information and simulations available to them, so I'm content with the steps being taken for now. You'd have probably criticized Boris whatever he did though wouldn't you? Even if he'd found the cure all by himself.

Obviously this isn't why he wanted to be PM - this and dealing with flooding. He'd rather be involved in great moments of national pride, like the Olympics, which make him look good. However, he's all we've got at the moment. At least until he gets the virus and Michael Gove steps in. ::)

I have a theory on why people are stupid.

We don't know what a pandemic is. So people are assuming it is like "A really big natural disaster". Which it is not. You will be able to go out and get supplies during this pandemic, as evidenced in Italy. You will be able to get out and about. People are being straight up idiotic.
