Adrian's Solo Discography Ranked - The Complete List

46. Hypocrisy
Psycho Motel
Average Score: 7.20/10
Welcome To The World 3/13

Another strong song from Welcome To The World takes a powder. Over half of the votes cast were 8/10 ratings, accompanied by a smattering of lower scores.

Comments:
Me Gary and Adrian got together for this one with a bass riff that Gary had. I kind of intended the lyrics to lean towards a few people I’d met who were very much living in the past and on their past glories.
Hypocrisy what a song just rocks.
An appealing verse, a great pre-chorus, and a solid chorus. The solo break is bizarre and off-rhythm, but I dig it. The ending is kind of awkward and sudden.
Good song. Though, they could've literally used any other song to close the album, lol.

While Silver And Gold and State Of Mind appear to be duking it out for last place, Awoken Broken and Welcome To The World appear to be neck-and-neck for first place, with the latter having a slightly higher average so far. Any early guesses as to which album will be victorious...?

I'd guess Welcome to the World, though I think the highest songs from Awoken Broken may end up higher than WTTW's.

45. Don't Ask Me
Urchin
Average Score: 7.25/10
Limited Releases 12/20

Another one of Urchin's better songs reaches the end of the road. @GhostofCain isn't a fan, but the other votes were all 7/10 or 10/10.

I continue to be surprised by how many Urchin songs are still in the countdown. I didn't rate any of them higher than 7/10, and only 5 of them made it that high in my list -- but there are still 7 Urchin songs left after this, and only 2 of my personal highest-rated ones are left. Hmm.

(The search function wasn't working for this song title, so I included the only comment I could find in this thread, which happened to be my own.)

Comments:
A peppy riff with rhythm section accents drives a catchy verse. The pre-chorus reminds me of The Beatles and Megadeth at the same time. Decent chorus. Pretty good solo with a nice harmonized bit, and a solid bridge late in the song.

44. Black Leather Fantasy
Urchin
Average Score: 7.25/10
Limited Releases 13/20

Another Urchin track rides off into the sunset, and this time it's the band's debut single. This nearly 7.5 minute long song has David Hall on vocals instead of Adrian, and it's chock full of '70s hard rock clichés.

Everyone else who voted apparently liked this song better than me, and one person even gave it a 10/10! I don't know what you folks see in this one, and since no one else commented on the song, it might remain a mystery.

Comments:
Very much a product of its time. [...] Did I mention all the motorcycle sound effects? There are a handful of brighter spots, but this is mostly overlong mediocre cheese.

43. Western Shore
Psycho Motel
Average Score: 7.33/10
State Of Mind 7/10

State Of Mind's only ballad is unexpectedly left stranded on that western shore. Most of the votes were centered around 8/10, but a couple of lower votes pulled the average down.

I really thought this one would finish higher. We don't hear Adrian go acoustic all that often, and it's a very nice aspect of his style.

Comments:
Western Shore is so good. Excellent performance by Solli. Sensitive guitar playing at the end by Adrian and I also dig his modest but excellently fitting backing vocal in that great chorus.
Adrian's backing vocal in the chorus? His only one on the album and while it's a bit soft (restrained, almost tired), but it adds so much to the song. Such a beautiful harmony and the voices work very well together. Melancholic, almost sad sounding, touching stuff.
really good
A sweet and effective ballad. Nice acoustic work with tasteful string accompaniment. The electric bridge is well done, but feels totally out of place until it slides back into the chorus.
Ooh, a quieter song. The heavy part is pointless but the rest of the song is great.
pointless heavy parts (as in "Western Shore", I mean... just why?) [...] Despite that strange middle part, though, "Western Shore" is probably the strongest song

42. City Of Dreams
The Untouchables
Average Score: 7.33/10
Limited Releases 14/20

As we reach the midpoint of the countdown, we close out the bottom half with the one and only track in the list from The Untouchables, the band that Adrian formed immediately after leaving Iron Maiden.

I hadn't heard this track until I was preparing the voting for this countdown, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Leaning more in the direction of A.S.A.P., but with less synth and more blues, "City Of Dreams" is a great early '90s anthem, and the only studio recording of the band that's been publicly distributed as far as I can tell.

There is supposedly a full album's worth of studio recordings from the band sitting on a shelf somewhere, unlikely to ever be released. Personally, I'd love to hear it.

Comments:
The Untouchables, only liked City Of Dreams.
Great verse, great chorus. Adrian's voice sounds great too. Do I hear a hint of "Thunderstruck" in here? [...] Great stuff!

41. New Horizons
Michael Kiske
Average Score: 7.38/10
Collaborations 2/8

When Michael Kiske (the famous former singer of Helloween) decided to record a solo album in the mid-1990s, he paired up with Kai Hansen of Gamma Ray (and formerly Helloween) and Adrian Smith. The original intent was for that core group to write and record an entire album together, but for undisclosed reasons this was scaled back to co-writing only two songs, with Adrian playing a guest solo on a third.

"New Horizons" is one of Adrian's two songwriting collaborations from this album, and it's a driving rocker with some excellent soloing. Hansen's fast, melodic style is a great counterpoint to Adrian's bluesier leanings, so it would have been nice to hear more from this group.

Over half the voters rated this an 8/10 or higher, but a few lower votes brought the average down in the end.

Comments:
Decent stuff.
A great atmospheric intro gives way to a cool, aggressive verse. Strong pre-chorus and chorus. Excellent solos, great bridge. The pedestrian drums on the chorus start to grate after a few repetitions
It would have been great to get more collaborations between Adrian, Hansen and Kiske.

Another track from Silver And Gold goes down. This song has some unusual elements for that album, including prominent female vocals.

Most of the votes were centered around 7-8/10, which makes sense given the final average.

Comments:
After the Storm is one of the better songs on the album.
Great verses with great vocals. The chorus is a bit odd, but the strong female backing vocals are pretty neat.

39. Killing Floor
Bruce Dickinson
Average Score: 7.44/10
Collaborations 3/8

"Killing Floor" was a strange choice for the leadoff single from Bruce Dickinson's The Chemical Wedding album. It was one of three tracks that Adrian co-wrote during the sessions for that album, and it included a lot of the odd-rhythm riffing that Adrian had been experimenting with during that timeframe.

People generally seem to either love this song or only sort of like it. The riffing is polarizing, the chorus is polarizing, and the baroque interlude is polarizing. It's frequently cited as the worst song on The Chemical Wedding (though I would personally give "Trumpets Of Jericho" that dishonor), and it has now been exiled to Adrian's own killing floor.

Comments:
Song that makes you the most nostalgic [and] most catchy song [on the album]
Surprisingly good song [...] Best pre-chorus [on the album]
Worst song [on the album]: "Killing Floor", but still pretty good.
Worst song [on the album]: Killing Floor
Worst song [and] most disappointing song [on the album]
So, pretty much everyone but me thinks "Killing Floor" is the worst Chemical Wedding song? Okay then.
To call any track on TCW the "worst" is stretching it as they're all masterpieces. However, of them, "Killing Floor" is just slightly below the others.
To me, Chemical Wedding has no filler tracks. Yes, Killing Floor [is] weaker in comparison to the rest, but [it's] still better than half of Accident.
That weird “renaissance” part on Killing Floor is the only thing that drags it down.
Cool greasy verse, a nice gentler pre-chorus, but a merely OK chorus. [...] Awesome baroque interlude with harpsichord and plenty of "woah-ohs" [...] Lots of great material here, but the weaker chorus (SA-TAN!!) holds it back.

Comments:
"Down the Wire" is decent

Silver And Gold has pulled even with State Of Mind again in the race for the last place album. Any final predictions on which one will be bringing up the rear?

Please be State of Mind. :S

Silver and Gold is probably my favorite Adrian album, actually, because while it isn't perfect, neither are his other ones, and I love the sound and feel and vibe. Though Awoken Broken is a stiff competitor.

37. Keeping It Mellow
Urchin
Average Score: 7.50/10

Another Urchin track reaches the end of the line, and I think it's one of the strongest ones they recorded. The song has a straightforward, laid back groove that fits the lyrics, but it climaxes with a terrific long-form solo that stays with you after the song ends.

Comments:
A simple but appealing riff leads into a solid verse, an OK pre-chorus, and a chorus that mirrors the verse. [...] The song ends on a pretty great extended solo.

Yet another Urchin track falls. This one was more polarizing, with half the votes falling in the 9-10/10 range and the other half in the 5-6/10 range. I was personally in the second group.

Comments:
Decent verse. The pre-chorus is OK, but the chorus is lame. [...] Decent harmonized part and a cool extended tradeoff solo section. A better variant of the chorus finishes things off.

State Of Mind 8/10

State Of Mind takes another hit with the loss of this solid mid-paced rocker. This track has a lot going for it, but its almost nonexistent chorus was probably a factor in its somewhat earlier exit.

This song did it all in the name of rock 'n' roll, but it dug down so deep that it can't find its way out of that hole...

Comments:
This one's better.
Nice riff, nice verse, great pre-chorus, but a disappointing chorus. Good solos.

34. Countdown (Alternate Version)
Urchin
Average Score: 7.60/10
Limited Releases 17/20

"Countdown" contains a number of musical elements that were later used in Iron Maiden's "22 Acacia Avenue". This alternate version of the song is a little heavier, but sounds a little worse IMO, and it would appear that on balance the other voters tended to agree with me, since this version is getting eliminated first.

Not much forum discussion on this version of the song.

Comments:
Largely the same, but the sound quality is worse, the opening isn't as soft, and the ending is abbreviated and a bit different. The solo is a bit more fiery in this one.
