[Evergrey]

Would be nice to see these guys support Maiden one day!
So happy for Tom and the guys at Evergrey. They are an amazing band that's been working hard for decades, and they seem to be rather big Maiden fans. He made some Live After Death references on their first live album and they've performed a great acoustic cover of Wasted Years:

Going a bit offtopic, but seeing Metallica yesterday in Gothenburg makes today's Maiden seem like they're in their prime.
All I heard was... just noise. And Ulrich bashing the drums loud as hell while altering the tempo every each second. Could not feel any sense of musicality at all last night.
Also, because of the round stage and where I stood, for 70% of the show I couldn't even see anyone playing.

Made me miss good old Maiden

Are the people at Hellfest even Maiden fans? Like, did they know Maiden would play when they bought the tickets?

I feel like Maiden just aren't a good fit for festivals. The only crowd I've seen who were really into them was at Sonisphere 2014. When I've seen them at Download, the response has been quite muted. Videos that I've seen from other festivals they've headlined is pretty much the same.

I´m happy for Tom and the rest of the band too! Been a fan since their debut. I saw them on that acoustic tour where they did the Wasted Years cover.
Amazing band.

Did Hellfest at the weekend, I was there for Friday and Saturday.

Managed to have no spoilers for the set, bar obviously working out that Alexander would be played. Also all the SIT and Senjutsu tracks that I had an inkling would be played were played except for Death of the Celts which I thought had a chance but Parchment was what I thought was more likely. Would have never guessed in a million years for CIPWM and The Prisoner, and overall the set was pretty short on the "staples" with only 4 of the set regulars and even then Wasted Years isn't one of the most regulars.

Maiden were excellent, Bruce in particular, only slight hitch was H got lost in the Alexander solo, has that been happening much? Delighted that I have two more gigs to come.

Hellfest was a brilliantly organised festival, really enjoyed it, I would go back in future except it's pretty hard to get tickets. I only got in on the guest list as I know Def Leppard's sound engineer, but there's no way I would buy tickets for a gig before the line up is announced and that seems like the most likely way to get tickets.

Other bands that were good were British Lion, Skid Row and Def Leppard, only saw about half an hour of Motley as we had to drive back to Nantes and their set wasn't going to finish until 1am, but enjoyed what I saw. Some bands that I'm not a fan of that were a good watch were Alter Bridge, Powerwolf and especially Papa Roach, who I'm not a fan of musically but the frontman is so enthusiastic and good natured that you can't help but enjoy them.

Machine Gun Kelly has surpassed the Murderdolls to become the worst act I ever saw:lol:

I think I have read exactly the same text in a different thread.

Deja Vu confirmed!

Yeah, Murderdolls in Donington 2003 were already bad. Other really bad live act: Paradise Lost. Singer didn't hit one note right. Saw them opening for Maiden in 1995 (?) I think.

Rock in Rio anyone? If Maiden aren't good for festivals then why do they keep having them as headliners?

Because they guarantee the promoter a good number of tickets sold.

I have seen Maiden at many different festivals over the years (Bospop in 2005, BBK Live in 2007, Via de la Plata Festival in 2008, Sonisphere Sweden and Sonisphere UK in 2010, Download festival at Donington in 2013, Sonisphere UK in 2014, and Download festival at Donington in 2016) and the audience's reaction was mixed (enthusiastic reaction to classic songs but some newer tracks - like The Red and the Black in 2016 - went down like a fart in a two-man submarine).

The best reactions I can remember were at BBK Live in 2007, Via de la Plata Festival in 2008, and Sonisphere UK in 2014.

I think this is largely due to the fact that Maiden never go out of their way to do a 'festival setlist', so when the festival crowd inevitably draws more casuals who only want to hear 80s classics they don't realise they're going to see a set that is almost entirely post-2000s material (Sonisphere 2010), heavily drawing on Book of Souls material (Download 2016) or starting with the opening 3 songs from Senjutsu (Download 2022). It's no surprise that Sonisphere 2014 and Download 2013 went down a storm when they were both hit-filled sets, but conversely the Maiden England tour drew criticism from more dedicated fans for being unambitious.

The current tour definitely leans more into deep cuts and new material so it makes sense that it's not well suited for festivals, if it hadn't been for COVID and Maiden had brought the 'classic' Legacy of the Beast package to Download and the other festivals on the European circuit in 2020 as they were initially scheduled to then I expect that would have been very warmly received as well.

The last few times I have seen Maiden (apart from my solo adventure to Donnington), I’ve been with the same two guys. They also go crazy when the Trooper starts. I am a bit fed up of the song but I suck it up. It’s cool seeing your friends excited about things.
at the LoTB outing that I attended, "The Trooper" had several mosh pits and burning blankets/articles of clothing (FIRE FIRE FIRE, in my best Beavis) .. definitely the only song of the night that conjured that kind of activity.

Quoted for truth.

Maiden are stubborn, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but that could lead to a cold response at festivals when playing newer stuff or deeper cuts.

That is true, but at Download in 2016 I was at the very back and the atmosphere there with some new songs was one of absolute indifference.
I was in the first 15-20 rows or so for that show and even that close the energy levels only really got above a 5/10 once The Trooper backdrop came down.
