Official Hockey discussion thread

He absolutely is. And I don't care what he says about the Habs - he's just generally wrong about hockey.

He's just….wrong.

It's hard to explain, because I'm at work and I'm tired, etc. But a lot of the stuff he says about hockey is wrong. He anointed the Staal brothers the next Sutters. One of them probably won't ever make the NHL, and neither Jordan nor Marc will win any awards ever, just as an example. He predicts stupid things, like Dion Phaneuf will be the face of the Flames for 20 years, and win Norris trophies by the time he's 23. Right.

It's just….argh.

Jordan COULD win the Selke... I agree about Marc and about McGuire being a moron in general. I prefer Melrose. He might not be able to coach anymore, but he does great analysis.

I don't hate McGuire, but it's hard to deny he is the dark master of hockey hyberbole.
My most hated analyst is Greg Millen. His entire schtick consists of pointing out the obvious in a negative fashion.
— "Chara put the puck right on Ovechkin's stick. You just can't do that." Well duh!

What did you guys think about the Calgary Flames president crying about Mike Peca crapping on Jay Bouwmeester during a TSN broadcast?
Peca basically said " I liked playing against him. He's soft and coughs the puck up."

Ken King says that's too personal and Peca shouldn't say it because it violates some kind of ex-player code.

To me, that's exactly the kind of analysis I like from an ex-player.

I've seen plenty of ex-players say things like that... Roy, Claude Lemieux, Stevens... And yeah, it's refreshing to get honesty. I hate intermission interviews. 'so what happened there?" "Well, they're playing hard, we'll have to make minor adjustments, but we're playing well in our own end, we got to give it 110%" "So... why did you guys lose?" "Well, they came ready to play, played hard, we weren't ready, gave them the puck, it's a tough loss, but now we have to look ahead to the next game."

Yeah... Thanks for saying NOTHING!

Like 99% of interviews. :innocent:

I watched SKA St. Petersburg vs. Carolina Hurricanes today, and I learned somethings.

1. There are a fuckton of ex-NHL players in St. Petersburg. Afinogenov, Brylin, Cajanek, Grebeshkov, Nabokov, Yashin, and Zubov.

2. The best Russian teams can hang with the worst NHL teams. Carolina and SKA were neck and neck till Maurice pulled Ward for Peters in the 3rd. Peters sucks.

LOL. I noticed that in the Olympics and Worlds Tournys. Most ex-NHLers go to Russia, but a lot of Euro Leagues are populated by them. Palffy "retired" from the NHL only to continue playing in Europe. What the hell is Afinogenov doing there? Contract dispute?

I love these games of Europe vs. NHL.

Season starts in three days!
Prediction time:

Vancouver wins the Northwest easily and goes out early in the playoffs.
San Jose wins a mediocre Pacific.
Detroit, a little surprisingly takes the central over a weakened Chicago.
Buffalo again over Montreal and Boston in the Northeast.
New Jersey wins the Atlantic and maybe the conference.
Washington, as the southeast's only playoff team.

LA will take a big jump and Ottawa big nosedive.

Vancouver wins the Stanley Cup this year. I've been thinking for awhile who my prediction should be, and it's Vancouver.

Sid the Kid sweeps the awards. AO only plays 65 games due to his first major injury. Toews is a close second in everything.

Vezina Trophy goes to one of two people: Carey Price or Jaroslav Halak. Either way, both the Habs and the Blues go out in the 2nd round.

And finally, here's my boldest prediction of them all: Drew Doughty wins his first of eight career Norrises this year.

Hmm, Predictions... mine will be vague. In the West I see either SJ or Van in the final against Washington... yup, I said it.

As far as players... Halak will help St. Louis to the playoffs, Sid repeats a 50 goal performance and Malkin rebounds from a shitty year. Luongo performs better not being the captain. Horton's move to the B's sees him break 30 goals. Gaborik and Havlat continue to play 60 games because they are made of glass. Lundqvist wins yet another 35 games making him the most consistent goaltender since... well, Brodeur.

You don't think this prediction is bolder?

Nope. Go look at the defense on the Blues and tell me that Halak doesn't have the best chance in the NHL of being the Vezina trophy winner.

I would be very surprised if Price wins the Vezina. There are two better goalies in his division — both on equal, or better teams.
I like Carey and think he will eventually be a star, maybe even this year.
But not the Vezina.

Eight Norrises for Doughty on the other hand is not out of the question.
If I was building a franchise from scratch starting today, I'd rank him only behind Sid and Alex.
And he may pass Alex this year.
As for Vancouver, I'm not counting them out.
But people are forgetting Sedin, Burrows, Kesler, Mason, and Samuelsson all had career years last year.
Odds don't usually favour a repeat.
And you would not believe the number of Luongo doubters out here.

I don't think Price will either. Hence, my choice is clear.

I agree with that statement on Doughty. Given that I think AO is going to be playing under 70 games this year, and Doughty is just epic....well.
