Good thing I don't have HBO....It would be funny to see Ovechkin goof around tho, seems like he has a good sense of humor. Me and my friends were looking in to getting tickets for the Winter Classic but then realized the legal drinking age is 21 in the states. Theres no way I'm not getting drunk on new years :p.

Oh and how about the gutless Habs fans booing Carry Price when he got pulled last night, he's a good goaltender but hes not going to have any motivation if the whole city treats him like shit....

Like Bob Mckenzie said theres no way Price can win after Halaks playoff run last year. I think it would have been better for the Canadians and Carry if he was traded this off season.

Nobody would take him. I don't think there's no hope; there's a fool's hope. The same hope that Montreal had when they started a young college boy in '71 and a rookie in '86.

Carey Price is a damn good goaltender when he's on his game. Gionta believes in him, so does Mike C. and Hal Gill. Gionters has to get out there and tell the fans to shut up once they give him the C.

4 goals on 16 shots... go B's! This is the season that will make or break Price. He is obviously a winner, now he needs to learn to put the distractions aside, be a pro and win at the NHL level...

Price is taking all the team practises now. Even for the B team, which he is not supposed to practise with. Darren Dreger says that's his own volition, too.

Price has the talent to succeed. He is more talented than Halak.
But I think the pressure is going to chew him up.

NYR has waived Wade Redden, who makes 6.5 mil/year. Remember when this guy was on the 2004 WCH team and the 2006 Olympic team? Yeah, me either.

I doubt he will be picked up, and Sather doesn't seem to want to bring him back up on re-entry waivers, to see if someone will pick him for half wages. He seems to want Redden off the team. I can get that, but then why did you sign the guy for 6.5 a year over six?

Redden has completely lost it.
But then Sather lost it when he traded Gretzky — if he ever had it all.
The most overrated hockey GM ever.
It's a miracle he still has a job.

Sather didn't trade Gretzky - Pocklington did. But yeah, I agree. His time passed somewhere around the time TXF was released.

My point was that Gretzky made Sather.
Yes, they won a cup after the trade, but that was the leftovers of what Wayne built.
Sather was nothing without him.

Wayne did not build anything... he played, that's it. No need to retype my thoughts on Gretzky when I can just quote myself... yes I am that self-absorbed :D

Ok, so today is the 22nd anniversary of the Gretzky trade from the Oilers to the Kings. There are a ton of articles about how the trade changed the game forever.... for the better. While they don't say it out right all the articles are talking about the benefits of the trade and how it helped grow the game in non-traditional markets.

Well I'm here to talk about how much that sucks. First of all, if the trade showed anything is how much Gretzky SUCKED without his beloved Oilers. was he a great player? Of course, not denying that, he did help the Kings to the final practically single-handedly. However the Messier-led Oilers won again in 1990 AND Messier won AGAIN in NY... without Gretzky and without the oilers... Now THAT'S a great player.

Not to mention what is so great about growing the sport in nontraditional markets? Of all the canadian teams only Ott is a "recent" expansion team yet Winnipeg and Quebec have been relocated. Not to mention Quebec was on the cusp of being a force to be reckon with (the Avs won 8 division titles in a row and two Stanley Cups with their core). On the other hand what the hell have the Florida Panthers done? SQUAT. Sure Tampa and Carolina have won cups, but Carolina did it on the back of a moved franchise (I still miss the Whalers and so does Hartford) and Tampa's was a happy accident since they haven't tasted similar success since, unlike Carolina that has been a decent club with relative playoff success.

While Colorado at least gets snow, would it have killed the NHL to give Seattle a team again? How about Halifax? Does NY or Cali really need three teams? Hell Florida has two and they both suck ass and haven't done anything to "grow the market." Neither has Phoenix for that matter. The only reason people loved the Coyotes last season was because they started winning... Oh, WITHOUT Gretzky as their coach. There is no loyalty in non-traditional markets. In traditional markets people go to the games because they love the GAME. Sure who wouldn't want to have a winning team, but going to the a game is also something to do. Just like High School football games on Friday nights in small towns, so is hockey in traditional markets.

Gary Bettman has turned the NHL into a NBA clone and his mistakes are finally starting to show. Sure Gretzky make hockey cool in Cali, but what Florida and Phoenix have shown is that only because a city has over 2 million people it doesn't mean 20,000 of them are going to go see your games. quote unquote smaller markets like Winnipeg and Quebec filled those stadiums with considerably smaller populations.  Not a single Canadian city has the population of the American cities housing NHL teams, yet games manage to be sold out.

Another thing that pisses me off is the focus on mindless offense. I say this, because every Aug 9th people wonder if this is the year somebody hits or breaks the 92 goal mark. Gretzky one thought that Crosby would do it, but now thinks it will be Ovi. Sure Ovi scores more goals, BUT he shoots upwards of 400 shots per season. He's playing the "one of them is bound to go in" game.

Lemieux had a 19% career shot average, Gretzky had a 17%... both their averages would be considerably higher had it not been for their last 3 seasons. Ovi... in his young career is averaging 12% and has never shot UNDER 350 shots. Crosby's average is 14% and has never shot OVER 300... My verdict is neither will break it unless Ovi becomes more efficient or Crosby starts shooting more.

Messier may be second to Sather in the over-rated ex-Oiler category.
He was a very good player. He was also a dirty, selfish SOB who turned a lucky prediction against New Jersey
and 50 cupless years in New York into eternal hero status.
Mr. Ranger dumped his team in a second for huge bucks in Vancouver, then tore the heart out of the Canucks.
He then hung around for another half-dozen years on reputation alone, an albatross for the Rangers and the Canucks.
Talk about self-absorbed...

(You guys talk hockey as good as you talk Maiden. I'll say it again. This is the best website ever  :D)

Dude. I'm Canadian. It's in my bloody blood.

Carey let in 6 on 30 last night. Better than 4 in 9, I guess. I'm really just not worried about it. Either he breaks or he doesn't.

And I'm a Mexican with a Sega Genesis :D

I disagree with your general assessment of Messier. I agree He fucked the Canucks over, he should have retired along with Gretzky, but athletes, like musicians, have a hard time knowing when it is time to give it up.

Anyone catch the action on TSN tonight?
I was quite impressed with Maguire's take on the Habs.
