How much better do you think he could have gotten? I don't see him worth more than 6.5M. It's nice to see him take the discount, not many players put team over money.
If he scored over 30 goals this year? At least 7, 7.5. You have to ask yourself who else is coming up in 2020 as a UFA. Taylor Hall is the big fish there, and odds are he re-signs in Jersey, especially since if he clicks with Jack Hughes. After him, as a scoring winger, you have Mike Hoffman who is a 30 goal guy and is projected to get at least 7.5, and then, uh, Mikael Granlund? Nah. Alex Galchekyuk? No thanks. He would have been in demand and surely been overpaid.

Speaking of new jersey, they are legitimately scary, right now. Well, on paper. Indeed we have to see how Nico Hischier progresses and how Hughes will fit in.

Roberto Luongo retires as the third winningest goalie in NHL history. Third to Roy and Brodeur. I think of him as the worst best goalie and it has nothing to do with his numbers. It's because, unlike the other two mentioned, I feel he got NO love anywhere. He went under appreciated in Florida, flat out hated in Vancouver and heavily criticized for his play in team Canada. Even Dominick Hasek got more accolades. So sad. The fact that he is 3rd with 489 wins also speaks to Roy's and Brodeur's greatness.

Luongo is hated in Vancouver for the way he left, but I think now they're realizing that he was a godsend to them. They'll hate him again though due to the cap recapture penalty.

Well, it finally happened. Kessel has finally been traded. It's a trade that makes sense. Kessel is reunited with his favorite coach in Tocchet and Pittsburgh get younger players in Galchenyuck and the defensive prospect. Sure Galchenyuck. Doesn't have Kessel numbers, but he is 6 years younger and might fit in their system while the young d they got replaces Matta who was traded first. Oh and cap space.

Definitely some questionable moves by several teams. The biggest winners seem to be the rangers and the panthers by far.

As a Devils fan it's nice to hear "outsiders" think Hall will re-sign. Apparently he pre-cleared the PK trade and is friends with him and Simmonds from their Toronto days growing up. Hall also nearly single-handedly help Simmonds get the All Star Game MVP a couple of years back. My point being, it looks like Shero is doing everything he can to woo Hall. I just hope he can stay healthy if he does sign. Between getting Hall back (he did not play after December), drafting Hughes, signing PK and Simmonds along with a couple of young guys getting developed (Ty Smith on D, Jesper Boqvsit at F, and Mackenzie Blackwood in net) there is a lot to be excited about in NJ. Of course none of those players could pan out and PK/Simmonds continue their recent declines and Hall walks....at least we're not the Islanders!

I suspect PK rebounds and Simmonds does not, but Hughes-Hischier is a very nice 1-2 centre combo. Hall should do quite well once he comes back. Hughes is supposed to be a generational player and may very well end up being as good as an Auston Matthews, which is quite high praise (although IMO Matthews hasn't lived up to his billing yet).

I think it's also work casting an eye on the Leafs, who have revamped their structure aggressively. They got rid of Marleau, Kadri, Zaitsev, and Gardiner and replaced them with Spezza, Barrie, Ceci, and Harpur. Really interesting series of moves, but I think it leaves them much better both against the cap as well as on the ice.

The Barrie trade was great but otherwise I don't think those changes really benefit their performance on ice that much. Obviously they managed to get lots of cap space though.

I completely disagree - Spezza has great value as a 4th line centre at league minimum.

I like what the Hawks did, they really covered themselves in goal (cannot count on Crawford staying healthy), got 2 solid D-men, and someone that can win a faceoff (Carpenter), they have missed Shaw ... and did not give up a lot and left themselves in good cap shape next year. I assume they are going to trade Anisimov, who should be very attractive to teams that need to hit the cap floor, think he has a cap hit of $4.5M the next 2 years, but is only owed a little over $1M in cash ... plus he is still a pretty solid player.

Cannot wait for the puck to drop ... helps the excitement level that I will be at the opener in Prague

It's definitely the first summer in awhile the Blackhawks have gotten notably better rather than having to ship out talent to get under the cap. The Hawks are tight under the cap, but they have a million or so dollars in wiggle room. The nice thing is that Crawford comes off the books next year, so if Lehner takes the starting job (which seems likely) they only have a year of $11 million across two goalies. If Lehner does well I could see him signing a 3-4 year at $6, 7 million, and Crawford might very well be done with all his injuries.

Despite having 12 million in LTIR and buyout hits, the Ottawa Senators remain $440k under the cap. They will re-sign RFA forward Colin White for appx $2 million, I'm guessing, and are set to go to the start of next year with 5 players on an ELC and 2 more players signed for <$1m. Furthermore, the team's actual payroll is millions lower due to backsliding deals and the Maple Leafs paying the signing bonuses due Connor Brown and Nikita Zaitsev ($3.5 million) before trading them.

Super cheap club will perform like a super cheap club.

Yeah, I think he needs to retire ... the amount of time he has missed with head injuries is not good for long term health, I would hate to see him get another one. I think they try to move Anisimov and maybe one of their lower D-men (just because they have a bit of a logjam there .. not that they would get much), but I think they need another 4th line type forward and it would be nice to have cap room to trade in season

If Crawford has a good season in the backup role and stays healthy playing 30ish games I could see him re-signing at around 2 million. I honestly don't believe that there is a market for Corey Crawford as a starting goaltender. Most teams are set in goal for next year, only Detroit, Ottawa, Columbus, Chicago, Calgary, and Edmonton are really gonna be looking for a goalie next year, and a few of those have solutions in place.
