Fighting also keeps the players from getting too nasty. If a particularl dirty play happens, such as a spear, slew foot, heavy slash or boarding, and the ref's don't see it, then a message is sent to the offending team by having the enforcer come out and deal with the offending party. It actually prevents these types of plays from becoming rampant. It is part of the game, always has and hopefully always will. If a player knows he can get away with a real dirty play, especially to a key player on the opposition, then they will act with impunity. Since the instigator rule was put into effect, we have seen these things go on. Even if the play is seen by the refs, and the victimized team is on the power play, they might look for retribution anyway because your power play is not really all that good and the other team will still take liberties, knowing your PP is not a threat.
