Time to bust out ye olde calculator and conjure up some statistics.
Tim Thomas and Henrik Lundqvist were rookies in the same season, which makes comparing them somewhat easier. Assuming 2010-11 had the same average sv % as 2009-10, the average sv % league-wise since 2005-06 has been 0.9075. Over that period, Henrik Lundqvist has played 406 games, faced 11,316 shots and amassed a save % of .918. During that same timeframe, Tim Thomas has played 315 games, faced 9,655 shots, and amassed a save % of 0.922.
So, assuming that the average goalie would have put up a save percentage of 0.9075 during that time, we can calculate the number of goals each tender stopped above average for his team.
Henrik Lundqvist: 124 goals
Tim Thomas: 137 goals
It's hard to argue that either goalie have not been amongst the best in the league over this time period. However, it's a great argument for Thomas that he managed to stop more goals for his team while facing nearly 2000 less shots.
But, as always, I nominate a less auspicious candidate as the true hero behind the mask since the lockout. Tomas Vokoun has saved 159 goals for his teams over the last six seasons, while playing (at least in Florida) behind far worse teams than either.
