The second one Thomas should have had. The first one? Nothing he could do. Defence error. And that was all that was needed. Carey stole the show. The Price is Right :D

Lundquist was perfect for what, the first 55 minutes against the Caps?
Rangers could have easily won that one.
Thomas had a great season but he is not an elite goalie — the three best goalies in the east play for the bottom three seeds.

Thomas is not an elite goalie?   :uhm:

The man's career sv % is 0.922.  Albeit short, he's had one of the best careers of any goalie, ever.

I'd say Thomas is an elite goalie. The kind of elite goalie who doesn't know what the third round looks like, which includes Luongo, Price (sort-of), Miller, Lundqvist, etc.

Time to bust out ye olde calculator and conjure up some statistics.

Tim Thomas and Henrik Lundqvist were rookies in the same season, which makes comparing them somewhat easier.  Assuming 2010-11 had the same average sv % as 2009-10, the average sv % league-wise since 2005-06 has been 0.9075.  Over that period, Henrik Lundqvist has played 406 games, faced 11,316 shots and amassed a save % of .918.  During that same timeframe, Tim Thomas has played 315 games, faced 9,655 shots, and amassed a save % of 0.922.

So, assuming that the average goalie would have put up a save percentage of 0.9075 during that time, we can calculate the number of goals each tender stopped above average for his team.

Henrik Lundqvist: 124 goals
Tim Thomas: 137 goals

It's hard to argue that either goalie have not been amongst the best in the league over this time period.  However, it's a great argument for Thomas that he managed to stop more goals for his team while facing nearly 2000 less shots.

But, as always, I nominate a less auspicious candidate as the true hero behind the mask since the lockout.  Tomas Vokoun has saved 159 goals for his teams over the last six seasons, while playing (at least in Florida) behind far worse teams than either.

Vokoun is fantastic, and he deserves to be on a better team. I hope someone gives him a shot in a competitive team next year.

Thomas, I think, might not make it out of the first round. Montreal had Boston's number this year, and I'm not sure Boston can find a way to win four of seven.

Crunch all the numbers you want. I know what I've seen.
Thomas is an athletic battler, a good guesser who worked himself out of the minor leagues to become a good NHL goalie.
He had a great (short) season.
But his stats have been compiled over a short period of time behind a good trapping team.
He has had trouble holding onto his first string role and he has never won a thing.
If the NHL held an open draft for goalies right now, Thomas would be taken behind Miller, Lundquist and Price. Guaranteed.
And that's after his best-ever season.

(PS LC, Miller has seen the third round twice and was a goal away from the finals with four minor league defensemen in front of him)

Thomas has no definitive style. He keeps his eyes on the puck and yes, he is a good guesser, but I'd call it being able to read the play.

Go Habs go! Go Habs go!

Price is standing tall. Even by the cruel calculator that GuineaPig wields, he's the best goalie yet, with only Neuvirth any close. Boston is getting stymied something fierce!

At this point in the playoffs, I would most certainly not disagree with the statement that Price has been the best tender so far.

I think it also demonstrates how important Chara is to the Bruins. He was not at 100% in Game 1, and didn't play Game 2. The Bruins really rely on his 30 minutes.
Also awesome: A lot of people counted LA out when they lost Kopitar, but Justin Williams and Drew Doughty (one of the best young d-men in the game) have really stepped up. Doughty proved he's clutch in the Olympics last year, and Williams is getting another chance to show he can be the player he was expected to be. Definitely pulling for the Kings to upset the Sharks.

I really think the Rangers can make it a series. Unfortunate they lost Callahan. Hopefully they can take out the Caps - I loved the looks on their faces last year!

While I disagree with the Thomas not being an elite netminder I do think the three best goalies in the east play for the bottom three seeds.

If NY wins the series it will be because of their goaltending and the reason the Capitals WON'T win the cup is because of their goaltending... you'll see. Which has me wondering... who the hell is Howard's back up? Osgood hasn't been playing, they got rid of Legace ages ago.... can't even think of him.

Big game for the Pens winning in Tampa and HUGE game in MTL for Boston... this series will go the distance and I HOPE Boston will win, though I doubt at this point. People give Vancouver and the Sharks shit for being Postseason disappointments when Boston has been a bigger disappointment for much longer. Remember back in '02 when they were first in the east? Still had Jumbo Joe? AND LOST to Montreal of all teams? Good god...

I can not beleive the Rangers blew a 3-0 lead going in the third period! Can't believe Paul Dvorsky did'nt blow the whistle when Hank covered up the puck with his mit and let Semin whack away at it. No bounces or breaks, losing in overtime lack that. Oh well on the bright side it could be 3-1 the other way , giving the Rangers had leads going in the 3rd.

FUCK YOU PAUL DVORSKY. YOU NEED TO DO THE HONORABLE THING AND FUCKING RETIRE LIKE BILL McCREARY.
