It did, but eventually it faded away. Year 1991 our friendship was still going strong; we listened Pink Bubbles Go Ape, The Black Album (where I almost ate my hat) and Use Your Illusion at his home among others. We listened Fates Warning's Parallels & Savatage's Streets in mine. But in 1992 he was not there when I first listened Fear of the Dark in my home.

Just last week I was passing in front of his paternal home and remembered the last time I ever saw him. Is he alive? Married? What is his job? Does he still play guitar?
June 23rd 1996, nearly 30 years now. I remember the date as a larger than life Greek prime minister had died earlier the same day.

We were talking about Metallica and how Fear of the Dark was a great album considering being their 9th and that Metallica probably wouldn't be a group with 9 albums if they were to continue the Load trend.

Well, they didn't and so they reached 9 albums

Speaking about NPFTD, it's easy to say that it was a disappointment after SSOASS, but then again, I think the album has no fillers (the only songs that could be fillers are probably ''Bring Your Daughter'' and ''Hooks In You''). Every song is well balanced and there aren't many standout songs (regarded as classics) from it. Although songs like ''Tailgunner'', the title track, ''Fates Warning'', ''Run Silent Run Deep'' and even the album closer could have been released on some of the previous 4 albums. The album is an enjoyable listen with energetic melodic and some interesting songs (solos too). It also has a lot less ''rock feel'' than the next album and basically the 2 rock songs are the weakest imo. The album's biggest problem (besides some songs having not so strong choruses) was the lack of any long/er songs. Someone should ask Steve why they decided to only write shorter songs for this album. Really odd decision. They would have helped a lot with more complex instrumental and vocal parts. The music is not at the level of TXF, but the songs are interesting enough. For the next album too (not all, ofc), that's why I think if we combine the best songs from those two albums, or if there were more longer songs on it, or IF Janick had written a few songs for it, then the album would have improved a lot. I think the band just needed more time (I don't think they wrote songs in 1989) and Adrian's exit didn't help either.

Of all the possible scenarios with the albums (3rd album with Paul, 3rd album with Blaze, 3rd album with the 1990-1993 lineup), I really wanted to see what album Maiden would have done in the 90's with Adrian (in SIT-SSOASS direction). Maybe it would have been even better, as difficult as it sounds. Or just 4 short & longer songs written by him in the NPFTD style. Ahhh, dreams.

You have to judge it by the time it was released.

1990 was by many the best heavy metal year ever with Painkiller, Rust in Peace, Seasons in the Abyss, Never Neverland, TYR, Iced Earth, Empire, Monster Magnet, Pornograffitti and Hammerheart released among others.

When you come after 7th Son (which also didn’t receive the proper respect in its time) and you have to compete with above mammoths the disappointment is huge.

I did it, but only with Maiden's previous albums.
And there must have been fans at the time who liked the album more than Killers, for example. My point was that some of the material wasn't as weak (or uninteresting) as some fans think. Remember also that some fans weren't happy with the band's mid-80's direction. Some of the songs on the next album are ''weaker'' than almost all of the material on NPFTD. The album would have been better with 3/4 different songs or without 2 songs.

It's probably Maiden's most underrated album.

I think Adrian was right at the time, they should have continue to develop as a band and an album like Bruce's AOB (but less heavy) would have been a logical continuation in a way of the band's 1986-1988 era. I don't know what would have been a bigger/improved sound than SSOASS.
The 90's produced some really great metal albums and I think Maiden were close with FOTD and one of the most interesting ones from that era is TXF.
 
Primal Fear - Code Red

I'm so glad I gave this album another listen after reading some positive comments about it. After a few listens I thought it's not that good but man what a great album. I strongly recommend it. As of now, it's my favorite album of the year. Interesting music, very melodic, pure metal!

I already said I like the first 2 singles plus ''Fearless'' (classic PF song with melodic chorus and heavy riffs, great solos and outro too), ''Raged By Pain'' (classic 80's metal rocker with brutal riff and chorus) and the ballad (fantastic melodies and chorus). As for the other songs:

''Bring That Noise'' - really cool melodic riffs, Helloween-esque instrumental section and simple but effective chorus.

''Cancel Culture'' - Gamma Ray vibe with effective pre-chorus/chorus and great instrumental section (the solos & the melodies in the whole album are so cool). Some Maiden-esque melodies too.

''Play A Song'' - fun rocker (like those of Helloween) with a nice vibe, chorus and great lead melody.

''The World Is On Fire'' - probably one of the best songs on the album with its Helloween/Gamma Ray vibe and Priest riffs. The chorus is anthemic and the melodies are awesome.

''Their Gods Have Failed'' - an epic that starts ''epic'' with acoustic guitar and keyboards. The main melodic riff is memorable and catchy, the verses needed to be calm and the chorus is impactful. The guitar harmonies are a real pleasure. Both of the longest songs on the album are interesting.

''Steelmelter'' - Priest-type of song (especially with its riffs and chorus). The instrumental section with the melodies and different vocals is really interesting.

I had to stop at the midway point on my first listen, but I'll try to finish it today. I can already say that Another Hero might be one of their best album openers.
