Now Playing (Video Games)

I won't be there day one, but I'll definitely get one in time for Metroid Prime's release. Echoes is one of my favorite games of all time and it's been too long since 3.

Some French retailers are listing the console and games for 20€ less than the official price. Might get one there, since the console isn't region locked (well, except the Japanese one).

Mario Kart World looks good enough that I am happy to be a day one adopter, and the free Switch Online upgrades to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom (the former of which I haven't played for the best part of a decade now) are another welcome incentive. The price of games is definitely eye watering, though.

I've 100%ed the Zeldas and have no desire to go back any time soon. MK World looks awesome though and I hope there's some interesting stuff/secrets in the open world.

DK Bananza looks really fun too. The prices are hard to swallow, but the first party offerings so far are amazing for the first 6 months of the console.

Since we have a relatively new OLED Switch 1, I'm probably going to wait a bit and then exchange (I haven't been following the news closely but I really hope there's backward compatibility, if not then I'll probably wait yet longer).

Backwards compatibility has been confirmed for almost all games, which likely all means all bar those requiring niche accessories like Ring Fit Adventure.

Even those will be playable as long as you connect Switch 1 controllers. There are some with technical difficulties that haven't been figured out yet though.

Good. I was most concerned about the absolutely biggest flex of the original - fitting the entirety of Witcher 3 + its DLCs on one cartridge, lol (and with less bugs than on Xbox to boot!)

Last night I was looking at my massive backlog and noticed I had put off Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2. I was having a hard time with normal (veteran) difficulty, so I brought it down to easy and got through quite a bit. I might finish it in the next few days, that way I can try and tackle Blasphemous 2 or give Inscription another shot. I'll make my way to Alan Wake 2 at some point.

Just finished OG Diablo for the first time, now playing Diablo II: Resurrected.
Oh man, when I was a teen I played the hell out of Diablo! My brother and I sunk hundreds of hours in that game as well as Warcraft II and StarCraft. Man, the days Blizzard could do no wrong. Diablo II was cool and all, but there was something special about the first game.

Update on Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2. I finished the game only to find there's more game! and I'm not talking about extra endgame content or unlocks with replayability. I mean a new game opens up storywise. Gamplay is the same and you run through the same levels, same bosses, but with slight changes.
At the end of the game, one of your companions gets captured as they sacrifice themselves to save the rest. You run through the game again to rescue them with the other three characters. THEN you FAIL to rescue them and the other two companions are too injured to continue the journey so you are joined by the ORIGINAL cast of the first game! This is cool because you are tackling the new bosses with old mechanics and you have to adjust your strategy when fighting bosses.
I'm very curious as to where the rest of the game will go. I was plodding through it kinda like, same shit different smell, until that point in the game and now I'm very excited as to what will happen next. A very pleasant surprise.

Still not done with the Castlevania expansion in Vampire Survivors and they dropped another update. I took a look, another Adventure, achievements and unlockable characters. Love this game, gift that keeps on giving, best US$2.50 I've ever spent.

Frekain' Lingo 2 man, this game is just pure genius, I'm finding myself understanding hints I didn't even catch randomly throughout the day. It's just the gift that keeps on giving. Nonlinear language puzzle game. I'm giving it 9/10 because:
1) It apparently hates my GPU (not that it matters that much, not the kind of game you need running at 60 fps)
2) think about word make small brain go frustrate
3) For some reason the dev had to give 90% of the rooms the eeriest music I've ever heard. Combined with the art style it's a recipe for jumpscares. I'm not sure if knowing there aren't any makes the game more or less terrifying :P
Other than that, hands down my best find since Slay the Spire.

I spent entirely too much time playing the WW2 team based video game Hell let Loose.

What makes it great: sticks to some baseline authenticity with WW2 weapons, vehicles and (slightly sanitized in the case of Germany) uniforms.

Is set up for cooperative 50 v 50 team based gameplay where voice comms and working together are needed to win.

Where it often falls apart: teams where too many players don’t communicate and/or work together as a unit.

Overall, though the 50-60% of games where the team gels and it’s fun to play make it easier to overlook the 40-50% of matches where the team descends into anarchy and you lose.

As Doom: The Dark Ages is getting closer, I've decided to replay the previous two installments on Nightmare to get in the mood. 2016 is currently the only thing that can manage to keep me away from replaying Blood and Wine for the second time (I have found out that despite me being something of a completionist, I must have missed about a third of the content there) and that is the only thing that can manage to keep me away from finally finishing Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

I realised I'm going to have to restart both Alan Wake 2 and Baldur's Gate 3. I've lost the momentum in both and honestly, both are something of a chore to me, I mean, I understand why people love them, I guess, but I just don't enjoy either. Good on paper, but I just can't manage to invest myself in it.

I think I’m one of the few people out there who prefers Doom 2016 to Eternal. The latter just seemed far more, I dunno, goofy.

Alan Wake 2 is a slow burn for sure. If you’re expecting a modern Resident Evil clone or even something like the Silent Hill 2 remake you’ll be disappointed; the game is more about atmosphere and mystery than anything.

I get this. I actually like both, with them being similar, but feeling wildly different, but I get where 2016 has more charm than Eternal.

I'd call it "overbaked" - the ideas are great, with the switching of characters and mental space to solve cases and changing the structure of levels with shutting off/turning on the lights, the non-linear narrative (you can technically do the stories in any order) etc... but as a whole it just feels... too much.
Too slow, gameplay-wise, really a bit overcomplicated - the lore is so byzantine I'm literally completely lost - and keeping up the momentum feels a bit like chore to me. The game is really good on paper, but it isn't that much fun as a game. IMHO, that is.
