Nicko McBrain retires

Just posted this in the Replacing Nicko thread by mistake -

I wonder if the guys have played with the new drummer already, without us knowing? Surely, they wouldn't hire a new drummer without knowing how well they perform together?
No one knows yet. But i think they will not choose some random guy, they will choose someone with experience and young at same time. Someone that proves hes good in studio and live. And it has to be part of IM family. (imo this includes opening acts, solo project musiciais and stuff like that).

Most likely. Maiden plans years in advance and they had already kept Bruce's cancer and Nicko's stroke under wraps. The likely scenario is that when Nicko made the public announcement about his stroke, the decisions about him leaving were already made, and the current tour was more about him saying farewell to the fans. If you think about it, advertising this as a half SIT tour makes sense since it feels out of place after a your that already banked on nostalgia.

They're not gonna replace Nicko without at least holding a semblance of an audition, so obviously. Plenty of time to do it with Bruce on tour and TFP only starting late in the year too.

Yep, it's weird to imagine Maiden with someone else behind the drumset.
The playing, the groove, the whole nice funny attitude that Nicko has..
Anyways, looking forward to seeing Eddie & The Boys next summer.

Anyone else having "mixed feelings" about next year's tour?

Like, I love Maiden. They're my favorite band of all time next to Rammstein but man the thought of seeing them live next yeat without Nicko pains my heart. The new drummer might be good and hey, they might even play songs Nicko couldn't have played anymore. But still.

Maybe it's the current emotion of today but I feel like it's really the end of a beautiful era. I probably can't listen to Maiden for a while now without having that same mixed feeling...

My thoughts on the set list are much more optimistic now.

I have feelings, I understand how this had to happen, but it's still makes me little weird and mixed on about the future.
They must make the new drummer permanent member if they are going to record album #18.

A member of the band? Probably just a hired gun earning (significantly) less than the 5 band members (and Rod and Eddie) for the time Iron Maiden are still active.
Besides Steve, everyone in Maiden is a hired gun and earns significantly less. Thats the way the IM company is set up. I think Bruce owns the beer branch and all the guys have shares in the company that owns the merchandise side (if i remember right).

50% of their sound if not more ??? Come on. I don't want to look rude, but sadness alters your mind. What about the bass sound, Davey's tone and Bruce's voice ?
The bass sound is the other 50%.

Ok, giving Steve and Nicko 100% of Maiden's sound might be unfair to the others, but they are the biggest contributers to how Maiden sounds. They are the backbone of the band. Bruce is the voice of Maiden, but the sound comes from the rhytm section. At least this is what I think.

You don't need to temper your statement with an at least this is what I think when you're literally right. This isn't a matter of opinion. Maiden's sound is entirely defined by its rhythm section. Anyone arguing against that is simply wrong.

Sad, but also bittersweet. It's been a career of a true legend and a wonderful journey to be a part of as a fan. It's a good closure to have him step down on his terms, at the end of a successful tour. Just imagine the feels being there in Brazil tonight...

The wording of the statements from both Nicko and Rod makes me think that he'll remain something like a "honorary member" of the band. A guest performance at some point is likely IMO.

That said, I'm excited about the band continuing. I think this brings some fantastic opportunities for the future. I hope it's not a matter of just finishing up the next tour.

As long as it's not Phil Collins, I'm fine with almost anybody. He once butchered the Zeppelin reunion during Live Aid by his ego, and I think Jimmy Page doesn't speak a word to him up to the present day.
Collins is a disabled person at this point... Major health issues. His son tho... Is a great drummer.
