Nicko McBrain retires

We all expected this...

That is not true. There are recent posts with the opinion that it is an impossibility.

...Thank you Nicko, enjoy retirement, like I do.

I agree.

Maybe two options were prepared? Nicko retiring after this tour and Nicko retiring at the end of the 2025 tour?

In Nicko's interview about his performance with the Royal Marines it sounded as if he plans to be part of the next tour.

But when I saw him on the screen in videos from this years tour to my eyes he always looked very groggy.

The bass sound is the other 50%.

Ok, giving Steve and Nicko 100% of Maiden's sound might be unfair to the others, but they are the biggest contributers to how Maiden sounds. They are the backbone of the band. Bruce is the voice of Maiden, but the sound comes from the rhytm section. At least this is what I think.
You don't need to temper your statement with an at least this is what I think when you're literally right. This isn't a matter of opinion. Maiden's sound is entirely defined by its rhythm section. Anyone arguing against that is simply wrong.
To be honest, I was initially quite disappointed when I first heard Rock in Rio at 16. The songs from Iron Maiden (Iron Maiden, Sanctuary), Killers (Wrathchild), and The Number of the Beast (The Number of the Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Run to the Hills) sounded so different compared to how Clive Burr had recorded them. As a drummer, it was immediately clear that the difference stemmed from the transition between drummers, but I was not aware of who recorded what at the time. Over the years, I’ve grown to love Nicko and his interpretations of Clive’s songs. That said, I don’t agree with the notion that Nicko defined the Maiden sound. He crafted his own version of it, just as Clive had his. Even Doug Sampson had his moments on The Soundhouse Tapes. All versions are great, and I’m confident that the next drummer will bring their own incredible take to the music.

A one off deal like the Royal Marines one is much more manageable than a tour that has gigs a couple of times per week in the span of a year or two. I'm sure Nick could've worked hard enough to give a better performance in one gig from the current tour but that also meant to completely fuck up halfway through the next gig. I'm sure Nicko won't perform live again with the band, even as a studio musician, but they didn't want toput it like that so it didn't sound like they were firing him.

As much as I love the other band members, if you'd take basically any song from Piece Of Mind to Senjutsu and mute everything except the bass and guitars you'd still immediately be able to tell that it is Maiden, just by how unique both sound. The same cannot be said about the guitars for example. Sure, their soloing styles are quite distinct, but the approach to riffs and chords not so much (which isn't an attack on the amigos, guitar is a much more homogenized instrument overall).

You don't have to go that far. Compare If Eternity Should Fail to Eternity Has Failed. Although, to be fair, the latter's production fits a world of metal production where the drums sound like they came from a programmed synthetizer.

Sad statement from Nicko (I've just read it in my email box)...

My bet for his replacement is not Joe Lazarus but Linda McDonald from The Iron Maidens.

It could be a logical choice as The Iron Maidens is the oldest tribute band to Iron Maiden.

Linda knows all the Iron Maiden older tracks. The next tour is based only on the songs from the first 9 albums. That could match.

Doesn't Linda identify as female? Then it would be very impolite of Rod to say Iron Maiden always gets their man.

Seems like more people are leaning towards Simon Dawson as the replacement. Will be interesting to see, I am sure we will know before xmas!

Yeah, it was expected and a long-deserved retirement. Amazing musician and great dude.
Nonetheless I hope he continues to be THE Maiden drummer if the band decides to record a new studio full length (like Glenn on Priest).
Many thanks for all the years of devotion.

I have tickets for Manchester and will certainly go and enjoy it, but some of the magic will of gone for me I suspect! That said I am sure the replacement will be technically very good.

There already are speculations that nicko might appear on the london stadium show. Who knows...
