I guess most left-handed people play guitar the "right-handed" way - simply because most learning material is specific about the order of strings etc, guitars are by default stringed with the bass strings on top (when holding the guitar the regular way). Plus one other thing: When starting from scratch, you have to aquire a set of skills for each hand, and it isn't automatically any more difficult to use your best hand on the fretboard instead of using it for picking the strings.
