I'd rather not explain in public. Let's just say no5 was planning on doing something very dangerous, and apparently either got away with it or changed his mind.

Well, good to hear he's alive and kicking.

I would not eat that. It looks even less appealing than lutefisk.

I added Liverpool, Douglas (Isle of Man) and Belfast in the Google Maps search and moved the finish line to Stromness at Orkney, and that gives you a 1008 mile road trip, Albie  :D With plenty of ferries.
Perfect - I'm off. See you in a few weeks.

Oh wait, I've got to work. :(

LOL at whichever mod locked the Member Elimination Thread after Onhell posted. Wasn't me. The mystery mod is an accomplice to thread killing!

It was me. I locked it and laughed out loud for a solid minute.

Your road trip got a theme LC?
My best road trip that never was planned for the early '90s.
All the classic National Hockey League arenas were scheduled to be replaced and we were going to fly out east and rent a car to see them all before they were gone.
Me and three buddies — hardcore hockey fans — had done some preliminary planning for trip that would have taken us to the Boston Garden, the Montreal Forum, the Aud in Buffalo, Maple Leaf Gardens, and a couple of others over a two-week span, with a Steelers game in Pittsburgh thrown in for good measure.
Then the league got locked out and fucked up our timing. Careers and families and demolitions got in the way after that and it never happened.
If only...

Sounds like a hell of a trip that might have happened. Ours will just be for fun...we want to do the DC/Virginia area, and maybe stop in at the big three cities on the way back (Philly, NYC, Boston). Sorta...let's go see what we can see.

Nice thread lock!

And your trip sounds awesome!

oh, and I hate microsoft licensing today.  Office is a pain in the tail.

Oh man, don't even get me started. I have to record every windows key in this building soon so that we have a record in case we get an audit from Microsoft.

OH, yeah, I'm in the same spot.  We've installed over 150 Office 2010's, and I have records and copies of each key.  However, at around the 120 mark, we stopped buying the disk version and bought just the code key, since I have over a hundred discs.  Then, our rep told us today that only the version that comes with the disc is transferable.  Yep, as soon as the 35 or so computers brick, that version of Office is garbage.

do you use magical jellybean to get your keys?

Bwahaha, had a brief conversation with one of the assistant professors by the coffee machine now.

Him: "Do you play?"
Me: "Play what?"
Him: "Computer games"
Me: "I used to, but not any more"
Him: "Why not? Ah, because you became a PhD student"
Me: "No, because I bought a guitar"
Him: "That's even worse"

Because we transferred to a new queue, I had to take down 200+ Macs. Now, I could have switched them over to Windows XP fairly easily, but it was actually cheaper for us to buy refurbed P4 3.0ghz boxes than buy Windows XP keys. We could have put 7 on them all, but the client requires Windows XP. So now I have around 150 Mac Minis sitting in an office somewhere that nobody can use, not because they're bad computers, but because the client uses out-of-date software that won't run on Windows 7.

Fuck.

Fuck.

That is madness.

What version of Win7?  if you have the Pro or Ultimate version of Win7, you can install 'XP Mode', which is a virtual XP machine, that does acts just like you are logged into an XP machine.  We had to do that for some of our out of date software...

We actually tossed that around and it was decided that educating the employees on using XP mode wasn't worth the $50 per unit we'd save. We also weren't sure if it would work, given that the network is a little more complex than normal, so it was felt to go with what we knew would work. And suck.

Yep, I can understand that.  What a pain, but I know just what you are feeling.

We have just, in the last couple months, finally, been able to start up Win7 boxes for all the users here.

Still working on an XP machine, and if someone tells me I have to change before I finish my thesis come August, I'll strangle him with my internet cable.

Haha!!

Honestly, other than some little things, I really do like Win7 better.  Some programs just won't run, some drivers just won't work, but overall, it is fairly simple to use once you get the hang of it.

But, I know how you feel, just keep nursing along that XP box and all will be well!!  Back the hell out of it up!!  Flash drives, External HDD's, Network drives, your mom's PC....

Win 7 has gotten amazingly positive reviews. Though after the mess that was Vista, it seems like a classic "new coke" move lol

As it is now, I backup my work files on the faculty's server (each employee and student has his own directory on the server, which is in turn backed up every night), and my personal files (documents, music and so on) on an external HDD I have at home.

I backup my work files twice a day now. Having to do just one day's work over again is no option with a few months left.

Good to hear, EW. I'm not nearly that rigorous. You really should be using a Mac with Time Machine - hourly automated backups.

Anyway. Vista wasn't bad in the way Windows ME was bad; Vista was a huge tech jump (considering it was 6 years later) and wasn't for the average person to configure. On a box that was designed for it, Vista ran great.

We had a departmental meeting the other day and the IT boss talked of the cost of software licensing going up drastically since all our 1270 stores are now on WinXP.  I nearly stuck my hand up and said:

"If we had gone to open source, it would be £0"

I really don't think that would have gone down well at all. Considering the finance director was present as well.
