Hell, why not. How far is that from where you live?

PS: Why did I ask instead of just checking Google Maps? I see that from Halifax (Nova Scotia) to DC is approx 1000 miles or 1600 km. So, a distance comparable to the distance from Trondheim (where I live) to Malmö in southern Sweden, or Hammerfest in northern Norway.

From where I live (Antigonish, NS), according to Google is around 1800 kms. We're going to modify the route to cut off another hundred or so. Once in DC, we're going to do the nearby Civil War battlefields (Manassas, Fredericksburg/Chancellorsville/Spotsylvania, Antietam, Gettysburg), the National Mall, Smithsonian, Udvar-Hazy, etc.

Sounds like an interesting trip, particularly the history part of it. Is any part of the trip particularly scenic? In Norway, road trips are usually taken more for that purpose - if you just want to get somewhere, plane is usually a better choice. But some road stretches are in really great surroundings. I and my brother did a road trip in the northwestern part of the country in 2006 and it was great, but none of the places where we stayed were particularly interesting.

Well, the trip from Nova Scotia to Maine is quite nice. And Virginia is supposed to be beautiful. The real advantage for us is that we won't have to rent a car - and gas will be cheaper than flying with current airline prices, with four of us going. We can hit up Philly, NYC, and Boston on the way back too to break up the drive home.

We had originally considered going to Indiana, but it was about double the distance, and just not something we could reasonably afford.

I added Liverpool, Douglas (Isle of Man) and Belfast in the Google Maps search and moved the finish line to Stromness at Orkney, and that gives you a 1008 mile road trip, Albie  :D With plenty of ferries.

I'll add it to the list! It's looking more like we might stop in Philly the first night, and do some stuff there, then hop to Baltimore, night in DC (National Mall by the night!); next day we hope to have a tour of the Pentagon and the White House with a stop at Arlington, and then the various Smithsonian museums; Udvar-Hazy in Alexandria the next day, and then Manassas, Fredericksburg, and then into the Shenandoah valley; next day Antietam and Gettysburg. Should be a good time.

When I was in Australia, I did a road trip which came to about 3,000 miles, and there can't have been many more than half a dozen towns along the way. Some of the scenery was incredible, but after a while outback gets pretty samey. My advice if you do that in 50+ degree temperatures, with water very expensive and only available every hundred miles or so, is get an air-conditioned car: I did not!

Update for the Maidenfans community: I've just exchanged emails with ___no5. He's alive and well, and taking a break from the forum because he's "busy as hell" at work - but he does plan to come back here when he has time to fully participate in the forum.

I've seen him online from time to time on MSN. I assumed he was just nuts. But I'm glad he didn't get executed, given where he is.

I'd rather not explain in public. Let's just say no5 was planning on doing something very dangerous, and apparently either got away with it or changed his mind.

The other news, which I don't think no5 would mind me telling: he has bought a new acoustic guitar, after 6 years away, and is re-learning how to play... and he's writing songs. H help us.
LOL at whichever mod locked the Member Elimination Thread after Onhell posted. Wasn't me. The mystery mod is an accomplice to thread killing!

Ha, that's good!  It wasn't me either.

Although, maybe Onhell's powers are increasing.  Not only can he kill a thread, he can lock it as well...

Your road trip got a theme LC?
My best road trip that never was planned for the early '90s.
All the classic National Hockey League arenas were scheduled to be replaced and we were going to fly out east and rent a car to see them all before they were gone.
Me and three buddies — hardcore hockey fans — had done some preliminary planning for trip that would have taken us to the Boston Garden, the Montreal Forum, the Aud in Buffalo, Maple Leaf Gardens, and a couple of others over a two-week span, with a Steelers game in Pittsburgh thrown in for good measure.
Then the league got locked out and fucked up our timing. Careers and families and demolitions got in the way after that and it never happened.
If only...
