Agreed. Stratego sounds like a blanket is covering the speakers!
Maybe my age is beginning to take its toll and I can't make the difference, but I'm really wondering if some of you aren't a bit influenced a bit too much my modern sounding production (Sabaton to make a name). Senjutsu is more than decent. Maiden don't want to spend too much time in the studio, they partially wrote, rehearsed and recorded this double album during a rather short break (some of us thought it was impossible) and the result is fantastic.
Could have better? Sure, but we know that they won't get rid of Shirley and that Harris will never leave the co-producer's seat.

p.s.: I've made my own, really improved version of the album, by skipping Darkest Hour.

You are completely missing the point here, as I do not particularly like modern metal production (all sounds the same to me) and I quite like the sound of some post-reunion Maiden albums. However, I love clear-sounding albums and that is something where Maiden could definitely improve.

I guess we were spoilt by having Martin Birch producing their albums during the 80s, as the guy was a genious being able to make things sound heavy yet extremely clear at the same time. He was not alone in that though: I am currently listening to late 70s Rush and the production puts the sound quality of latter day Maiden to shame.

A nobody called Kevin Shirley engineered Rush's Counterparts. :smartarse:

And yes, we were spoiled by Birch, because Steve let him do what he did best - And he is by far my fav producer/mixer from the old age. But I mean, Fear of the Dark was Birch too. As was No Prayer. Doesn't sound on par with Killers-7th Son, does it? Shirley/Maiden have made some great sounding records together. Just not all of their joint records sound great.

Don't get me wrong, I do not think Kevin Shirley is the problem. ;) I agree with you about the live albums he has mixed for Maiden. Flight 666, in particular, is outstanding.

Martin Birch's output with Maiden in the early 90s is definitely not as great as his 80s oeuvre. I wonder who started co-producing Maiden albums right around that time...

Yup. The production on A Farewell To Kings is stellar, for example.

Xanadu. That's how an epic should be mixed. And according to Mr. Živojinović, what you hear is the 2nd take of the song ever (basic tracks). Captured perfectly.

Senjutsu sounds brilliant in spots, but the sonic presentation is pretty uneven and more varied between songs than normal.

The Writing On The Wall, that's where it sounds brilliant throughout though.
^ Nicko mentioned in an interview that this is one of the aspects he likes about the album. I think it's strange. I like the production of the album a lot, but the difference between the rest of the songs and the title track & Stratego is really noticeable. Agree about TWOTW. And to sum it all up, the production of the albums is a result of the band/Steve's preferences and I think no one can blame them for that.

I think I've said it before, but what I like the most about Kevin's productions (and of all Maiden albums, really) is that every album has its own distinctive sound that is different from the others - this can't be done with the modern/Sneap production. Yeah, the production may not be perfect, but I don't want to lose that uniqueness of the sound. And btw, Kevin's work on the live albums is great.

This is how I rate his work - BNW, Senjutsu and AMOLAD (great production), TFF, DOD and TBOS (good). I think the production of TFF is pretty good actually and I like the loud mix of DOD (the sound of the riffs, not so much)... it's not bad by any means though. On TBOS, I like the sound of the drums and the guitars, but the mix is a bit muddy. Come to think of it, the only production on a Maiden album I don't like that much is the one in NPFTD (although the solos are crystal clear), but it fits the whole concept behind the album. While FOTD has one of the best productions imo and I like TXF and VXI productions too. Maybe it's just me, but I don't have a problem with most album productions - and to give an example with another band, Firepower sounds powerful and clear, but I also like the production of Redeemer Of Souls, the sound of the drums and the sharp riffs are great.
If they put out FOTD, TNOTB and RTTH... Bruh.

TWOTW, please.
TWOTW should be mandatory, I think. I mean FOTD and RTTH (I wouldn't mind it) have great stage props and TNOTB is always great, but I would like the songs selection to be more ''fresh'' (like for Download 2016). TWOTW, SOTC and HBTN/RTTH/Trooper would be cool imo.

I looked at what newspapers write about the concert on Saturday, normal dailies, not music magazines, because sometimes they write something funny.
But this time it is all praise.
