Iron Maiden News, Links, and Interviews

Why? When was the last time Iron Maiden had a former member joining them on stage? I can only think of one occasion: Donington 1992.
You know, as much as I enjoy the albums and appreciate Blaze’s time in the band, I’m not sure putting him on stage next to Bruce Dickinson is going to do him any favors with the fanbase. I actually think he has done a lot to carve out his own sound/image post Maiden largely by not being associated with Maiden at all.

I'm a huge Blaze fan and I wholeheartedly agree. Thing is, I can theoretically imagine Nightwish returning with both Tarja and Floor (and Marco and Jukka) in some 10 years time, as a legacy tour of sorts, like with Helloween. I can imagine the same with Rhapsody - some 10-12 years down the line after Luca realises that it's power metal and dragons that people want from him and finally stops fighting and embraces it again, I can imagine a huge comeback in the original lineup.

But with Maiden it makes no sense. Bruce has been the main singer for most of their career and while I actually prefer Blaze in some regards, his qualities are not those that would come across particularly well live, especially standing next to Bruce. Also, he's still ridiculously overhated in the fan circles, at least from what I gather.

Even a one-time guest apperance on a single track would probably not be appreciated, even if it was a song that would suit him incredibly well.

The thing is, Floor will sound way better singing old Nightwish material in 10 years than Tarja will. I’d rather just hear Floor sing it better than have Tarja onstage just for the PR. Just like I wouldn’t want to hear Di’Anno come onstage for some “reunion” stunt when Bruce will sound far better singing his material.

Floor will sound way better singing old Nightwish material

At least some of the material she can't sing even now - her version of Deep Silent Complete is completely off, as far as vibe and atmosphere go, so is Ever Dream. I could also live without the shrieking chorus of She Is My Sin in Floor's delivery. Sounds like Christina Aguillera more than anything to me, sorry.

That's not necessarily her fault, the songs are written in some way, but just because Floor is technical doesn't mean she fits or that she would be a better singer in the future. Bruce at least had most of the songs written for him, it would be Blaze who would be the outlier - if they didn't decide to go the X Factor route and make a lot of music that would fit Blaze like a glove.

(also, if you want to mention Stargazers - the live version with Floor is at least several steps lower so that she could sing it comfortably, and the song sounds darker, drearier, more boring as a result. But I digress)

But comparing it with Di'Anno is just ridiculous. Floor sounds far better singing some of the material and way worse singing some of the rest. I can't imagine Di'Anno sounding better singing anything, his era or not.

To be more abstract, I really appreciate that Tuomas has managed to write at least some songs for all three of the very diverse singers that actually build on their strengths and the charm and appeal of these songs could not be (or would not be) ever quite recaptured by the others – let’s see, at least one such as an example:

Sacrament for Tarja (apart from the above that I mentioned)
Amaranth for Anette
Weak Fantasy for Floor - although I hate it for other reasons, it comes to mind first as a song that couldn’t be recaptured by any of the other two singeresses, especially the breathy rasp in the verse.

I know we were talking about Tarja, but, like, for example, Amaranth really requires this light, breathy, fairiesque, acrobatic voice that does the jovial and whimsical jumps in the chorus - in the words of my wife, who is as impartial as it could be (she isn't particularly enamoured by Nightwish in general and doesn't have a preference for any of the vocalists) - "it sounds like replacing a butterfly with a bulldozer."

I’m talking currently and in the future. Tarja’s operatic range has shrunk considerably: she can’t sing those songs either.

Disagree completely about Ever Dream. Floor murders that song.

I will agree, however, about the Annette material. Only Annette could sing those (though she wasn’t always very good at them live).

One thing that would work is Steve doing some sort of touring project with Blaze, playing old rare tracks, like he spoke about briefly in 2017. Or Blaze and British Lion could tour together, and Steve joins in on a few Maiden tracks with Blaze's band.

I’d love to see Blaze supporting Maiden on a future tour, playing nothing but his own solo material. I think he’s been touring that Maiden anniversary set a bit too long now.

Touring with Maiden would give him a great chance to showcase his own stuff to a lot of fans who probably wrote him off.

Tarja isn’t the world’s best live singer, but frankly I’m not much blown away by Floor past the Imaginaerum Tour. I’ve been coming back to Hellfest 2022 every so often and she sounds bored out of her mind. I’m sure she’s still having fun but damn, her voice just is not going ham the way I think she deserves to. Her “Ghost Love Score” is still technically impressive, but it’s a far cry from the god-tier shit she did back in 2012. Floor is able to do almost anything vocally and yet her voice has the least personality of any of Nightwish’s singers. I would definitely be okay with Tarja and/or Anette rejoining the band for some legacy shows. (I doubt they would, though.)

Nicko wanted the drum kit to be SJ-themed because this was supposed to be the original album tour and the stage is based around SIT.
He wanted it to look like SJ Eddie's armor and said it will turn green sooner or later (like the armor on the cover). Cool. I actually thought he was going to use a green kit for this tour.

About the tour, he said that the fact they played 3 SJ songs and used the SJ stage set on the previous tour played a big role for (the theme of) the current tour.

Senjutsu album - UK Gold disc.

Bruce: ''Gold? That's fantastic! From the launch of the first 'Senjutsu' track, 'The Writing On The Wall', we knew that this album would work really well live and we're delighted that fans totally bought into an album with four songs over eight minutes long and another that is almost 13! This U.K. tour has been incredible and it reminds us how much our music — both new and historical — means to fans both in the UK and all round the world''.
