Iron Maiden News, Links, and Interviews

I love Only The Good Die Young, but I don't see them being able to play that live with Nicko playing as he's currently playing. Most of that song is a relentless gallop so you'll definitely miss those drum triplets. Caught Somewhere in Time is (I believe) an overall faster and longer and harder song, but it's got so much going on vocally and guitar-wise that if Nicko simplifies his drumming, the "essence" of the song is still perfectly intact. I don't see that being the case with Only The Good Die Young.

The fact that Steve has mentioned it a few times now makes me think they are likely to play it. I raised the prospect of Maiden doing a classic album in full live someday and Seventh Son seems like a go to choice, but I could also see them pulling it out on a future greatest hits tour.

I wonder if we are entering a period where Maiden is going to start dusting off never before played songs on a regular basis. They only have a few tours left so now is their chance to play any songs that they regret skipping the first time around. If Alexander the Great can be played live I don’t think any other unplayed 80s deep cut is a tall order. It’s also a relatively small pool of songs so it shouldn’t be hard for them to choose one for each tour they have left. To that end, if they really do decide to replace Nicko they’re going to hire a drummer who is capable of nailing anything in the catalog. Usually when older rock bands hire a young person to replace someone it opens up their setlist options quite a bit.

Interesting that Steve says they played it live. The seventh tour is pretty well documented in terms of bootlegs so it seems unlikely that it actually did get played unless somehow it ended up in an early 90s tour.

I'd say that's almost certainly Steve getting confused.

Some dumb comments in that Guardian review:

- "Time is on my side!” he (Bruce) roars, as guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers ramp up the tension on atmospheric opener Caught Somewhere in Time."
Should be "time is always on my side".

-
"But the gambit doesn’t always pay off – Senjutsu’s own epic Hell on Earth is far less riveting, particularly in contrast to Maiden’s battle-worn classics."
Hell on Earth went over well. What is the writer smoking?

- "Fear of the Dark, however, is a different beast. Boiling with genuine threat, it stands in deliciously bitter contrast to the band’s trademark tomfoolery."
The band's "trademark tomfoolery"??? Say what?

For fuck's sake, we are talking about a band that takes a zombie puppet to go for a walk on stage and has a singer who looks a bit like Doc from Back to the Future having a fight with said zombie using a fake gun! It does not get much sillier than that.

I also bet that Hell on Earth as an encore does not work as well as The Trooper of Wasted Years with most of the audience.

Great crowd participation in the gigs I was at.

I reckon given the reviewer has quoted all the other tracks in chronological set order, there's a chance he's mistaken Death of the Celts for Hell on Earth.
Aye I thought the same re Celts. Makes more sense goin by what I saw in Dublin. My much maligned seating tickets allowed me to see many people leave durin that number.

Personally, I enjoyed it more than on record.
