JLB said that it is very hard for his voice because his vocal style on recent albums is different then on the early albums. So when Constant Motion (for example) is switched with Take the Time it's hard because he has to sing in a higher register and hadn't had a chance to rehearse it.

Yeah I've never been able to get into Never Enough.

So the title isn't very fitting for you.  :D

Actually, it's perfect... since the song is about fans who are never satisfied with what an artist does. :innocent:

I can well understand why DT are now leaving this practice. It seems like something Portnoy had forced on the others.

I doubt it. No matter how much control Portnoy had (or didn't) over DT, you can't make 4 other guys play rotating set lists for years unless they're on board. I've seen interviews where JLB bragged about being able to remember all those lyrics; at one time, he was definitely into it. And when Portnoy first left DT, Petrucci initially said the rotating setlists would stay. In fact, it was one of the few things he seemed sure about.

There may be plenty of good reasons for stopping, but I don't think it's just because MP is gone.

Which is why JLB's answer confused me. But it has been quite some time since MP left DT and I wouldn't be surprised if they changed their minds since then. Also it might be easier on MM.

I doubt it's about Mangini's capabilities. I'm sure Mangini could easily learn the 40 or 50 songs DT used to put in a tour rotation.

Rather, it's about the fans making comparisons to Portnoy after every show. "Ooh, it's the first Lines In The Sand with Mangini!" "Wow, the first As I Am with Mangini!" "Hey, the first Surrounded..." and so on. I think DT is trying to minimize the inevitable comparisons, so they can establish a new area.

It seemed like that too. I guess if it is about Mangini's capabilities we will see a rotating setlist when the album is out?

Someone pointed this out on the DT Forum:
On Derek Sherinian's first full tour with the band, the Awake tour in the fall/winter of '94/'95, the set list stayed pretty much the same the whole way through (I think it was the same every night, but there might have been a change or two a few times).

On Jordan Rudess' first full tour with the band, the Metropolis: 2000 tour in the spring of '00, the set list was exactly the same for every single show.

I never thought of that.

Interesting, it must just be to get fans used to the new member. I wonder if they will rotate setlists after this.

On Derek Sherinian's first tour (the Awake tour), the band had not yet begun rotating set lists in the first place.

On Jordan's first tour (SFAM), the setlist didn't change because they played the entire concept album in its entirety at every show. That's the whole point of a concept album. The latter part of the show (2nd set some shows, plus encores every show) DID rotate, though not as wildly as later DT setlists.

Watched the Score DVD documentary and some of the songs. Wow, JLB really was on fire that night! Some amazing stuff. The scream at the last "TRAPPED INSIDE THIS OCTAVARIUM" is just insane. Some of my favourites are Raise the Knife and Innocence Faded, the band just killed them. Metropolis was awesome as expected. Have yet to watch Six Degrees, but it should be awesome with the orchestra. Also, thats interesting SMX. I hope they keep the same setlist but maybe change a couple songs around, that sounds cool :)

Mike Portnoy is going to be on That Metal Show this season! I'm sure he will talk about his split from DT, and hopefully they'll ask if he'll listen to the new record.

Huh? What did I write this time?

Yes indeed: "the entire concept album in its entirety". My redundancy wins the redundancy award for redundancy.

I prefer Shaman's Trance, but Bridges in the Sky fits in with the rest of the titles better, I think. I always thought that, and Outcry were a bit odd compared to the rest of the titles.

On the Backs of Angels is growing pretty strongly on me. It was "very good" at first, then it became "great" now it's fantastic.
