Dream Theater

First impression of Octavarium (the album). I really liked it. Even Panic Attack, which I know was eliminated first in the survivor. I really liked the Root of all Evil. I haven't encountered a song that I didn't like. In comparison to Systematic Chaos, I wasn't able to get through that entire album. I still haven't listened to it as a whole. Repentance just drags on forever and by the time it's over I'm ready to move on and listen to something else. Octavarium kept me hooked the whole time. And of course the title track is easily my favorite DT song.

I didn't like it that much.  I haven't gotten to know it yet but right now my second favorite is Root Of All Evil. These Walls was pretty good too.

Root and Sacrificed Sons are right after Panic Attack for me. Then These Walls, then the other 3.

Sacrificed Sons was good too. The only song I didn't mind was Never Enough.

I kind of agree with that. Except Panic Attack and Root of All Evil. I'm a big Pink Floyd fan so I don't mind them having an influence. But I only hear Muse on Never Enough. But I don't know Muse too much, it took someone pointing out the Muse influence on POW for me to see it.

Panic Attack has quite Muse'ish vocals, doesn't it?

From the 3:56 mark, at least. Before that, I'd agree there is not much Muse in that song.

Maybe. I don't hear it but maybe someone more familiar with Muse will.

Beneath the Surface sounds like Wither part 2. Ugh.

Important Stuff:
Also John Myung wrote Breaking all Illusions.
They are done rotating setlists, but might change things here and there
JP wrote Build me Up Break Me Down and Beneath The Surface
JLB loves Octavarium

That's what I wish Maiden would do as well. Keep most songs from concert to concert, but change one or two songs every few shows. For example, rather than playing The Evil That Men Do every night, rotate it with The Clairvoyant and Infinite Dreams (oh well, in my dreams).

That would be great.

I just wish Maiden would vary their sets more instead of playing the same classics that they've been playing for the last 12+ years.

On the other hand, I think Dream Theater's earlier practice of playing a completely different set every night would be overkill. I mean, if one particular song was really well received one night, why not play it the next night?

I can well understand why DT are now leaving this practice. It seems like something Portnoy had forced on the others.
