Dream Theater

This is the second one for me as a fan, but I'm probably more thrilled now because I can't wait to hear and see what the band can do without Portnoy and how Mangini's style will fit the music.

I stumbled upon an old (2007) Systematic Chaos era interview with Petrucci. Among other things, he stated that he would be more than happy to be able to write all the lyrics by himself:

Q: You wrote the lyrics to five of the eight songs on Systematic Chaos, well, four if we count ITPOE as one song. Were you simply on a roll? How is it decided who writes what lyrics to what songs?
Petrucci: I've often said to the band that I want to write all the lyrics for our records. It's one of the things I like the most. And this time around I was kind of on a roll, so there you go.

Anyway, nothing too important, but I guess it wouldn't be a nuissance to him now that Portnoy's gone (although Myung apparently wrote some for the new album).

This is the third Dream Theater I've been waiting for as a fan. I think I was just getting into them around the time of 'Octavarium'. 'Scenes from a Memory' was the first one I bought.

They'll probably keep their formula for setlists, after all they've had it the same way for 20 years now.

Which makes sense I think. Maybe they just wanted to showcase a little bit of everything DT has to attract new fans. Hey, it worked for me.  :D

Setlist wasn't rotated when they supported Maiden last year :S

I recall at the start of the tour they were going to do a best of to try to attract Maiden fans and treat the tour differently than normal.  From what I read, Portnoy  kept a database of what they played where so they would repeat minimally from year to year as they hit the same city and to change it around in nearby locations so people following the band would not hear repeats.  It sounded pretty elaborate and customized what he did (plus the new drummer will need to be up to speed with the entire catalogue)

I will be curious to see their setlists and how they change.  I liked how Portnoy managed it.
I hope the extended jam they had on the Progressive Nation European Tour 2009 doesn't make a comeback. Every instrument got a solo. So boring. :help:

Solos should be done away with (or limited to a few minutes) .. or perhaps one longer solo to give time for a  beer run.

But I agree, I don't like Medleys at all. I would much prefer if they just played the songs normally. If they play Metropolis for me and ruin the instrumental section with a medly, I'm gonna rage

Theres a funny meme kinda thing on the Dream Theater forums, the theory is JLB goes out the back to dig holes or check the forums while the band is doing instrumental sections :D

Progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER have set "A Dramatic Turn Of Events" as the title of their new album.

"A Dramatic Turn Of Events" track listing:
01. On The Backs Of Angels
02. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
03. Lost Not Forgotten
04. This Is The Life
05. The Shaman's Trance
06. Outcry
07. Far From Heaven
08. Breaking All Illusions
09. Beneath The Surface

The album title is somewhat fitting. I imagine 'Lost Not Forgotten' may have something to do with a Mr. Portnoy.

The last time I saw them in 2009 the setlist was pretty poor. There was something like eight songs in a full headlining set, one of which was the horrible extended jam and at least two others were at least 15 minutes long.

Does anyone know if Mike Portnoy still has all the old setlists on his website?
