I think there are some in Constant Motion but I'll have to listen again.

In The Glass Prison there are some nearish to the start, for example

RUN - Fast - From the wreckage of the past - A shattered glass prison wall behind me

where Portnoy says the RUN and theres a few lines of it.

There is the part "Forever more, into the night, blistering" in Constant Motion that is growlish...

Portnoy is the one who announced the lyric rule to the world, and I don't think he would have done so unless the rest of the band agreed. To say that MP "enforced" any rules is making assumptions; we don't know how the band works (or worked) internally. I doubt MP would have enforced anything unless at least JP had his back.

Sure, the word "enforce" was a bit strong.

I don't see how English not being the native language makes a singing problem. Unless their foreign accent would offend you somehow?

Of course not, I was saying that it could pose a songwriting (lyric-writing) problem, not a singing problem.

Yes, JP is the only known backup singer. But he and MP didn't start singing backup vocals until the FII tour in '97/'98 or so (according to MP in a DVD commentary). So they came out of nowhere as singers... why not the new drummer, or Jordan Rudess? Given Jordan's level of skill, I'm sure he can sing in tune - and quality of voice is less important for backup. Jordan has a lot going on with his keys, but there may be places he could do it if so inclined.

Could be. However, I seem to recall some Christmas tune or something that he and his daughter recorded as a charity single thing a while back (probably last year) - IIRC, his singing wasn't all that impressive. :D

It's Mike! Really amazing documentary, and I couldn't help but smile when they told Mike and his reaction. He obviously really wanted it. Beatiful Moment.

Blah, he's annoying to me. I stopped the video when I found out that it's him.

Here's my list:
Minnemann
Wildoer
Roddy
Lang
Priester
Donati
Mangini

EDIT: On the other hand, I think that Mangini is perfect for them. Minnemann is better IMO, but not really for Dream Theater. They are all so serious, and his smiling all the time :D Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHft4OR7Rus

Great reaction from Mike Mangini when he was told he was part of the band. I enjoyed Marco Minneman's audition the most but I'm sure Mike will do well for them. I look forward to seeing him perform with them.

Very excited for the new album, especially after Myung said that it was just like when he went over to Johns house and created music.

By the way, I never caught for whom LaBrie and Petrucci were saying "that was the most incredible" - "yeah, easily" - "by far"...

I have no idea, I think it must have been Wildoer, although I don't think Petrucci actually said "That was the most incredible", they muted that and then I think he actually said something else. Just clever editing I think.

Where did you see this reaction when he was told? Cool to see! :) Thanks!
(And where did you see those auditions?)

They never said. My guess is Minneman.
They did say, in the "previews" of each episode they have Labrie and Pertucci shitting bricks over one of the drummer's skills, but they never actually played those shots in the actual documentary.

Thats the first episode, the other two are on the same channel :)

He is announced in the last one.

Sheesh, well made stuff. But this really was made to be like a soap opera. The first shot of Mangini spoils it already a bit, because we immediately know he'll be it. That's the way it is constructed. "I want to be in this band". He is almost crying... this emotion and music in the background.

But I enjoyed watching it really. Thanks!  :)

Well, it wasn't that obvious watching it before it was announced that he is the new drummer, especially after Minnemann's performance in part 2.
