Play Classics talk is nonsensical when the people deciding on the results are hardcore fans. Could it be that "classic era" features more consensually stronger songs?
I would accept a "hardcore fan" result. I might disagree with 22 AA winning the Maiden survivor, but I would not nearly tear out my hair in utter disbelief (that would be a "hardcore fan vote", now wouldn't it?). But Hallowed was winning for quite a long time against the much more thought-through and more interesting Powerslave. Okay.
Of course a song off NOTB might win the Maiden survivor.
I would understand (if not necessarily back it up) if Trial of Tears was #1 in the DT survivor. But
of course I&W and
Awake are the best and the latter-day Portnoy era albums are the worst. The "wankery" arguments and shit.
Do you really want to say, or even imply, that NOTB features more consensually stronger songs than any of the latter Maiden albums?
So far, the "hardcore fans" are voting pretty similarly to Loudwire visitors, as far as I'm concerned, so I'm sceptical.
That said,
no-one has explained to me so far why Learning to Live is the sacred song. It's just - "he's a heretic, he votes against Learning to Live and LTL is one of the best DT songs", but I have repeatedly stressed why the song's not as great or why I don't like it. I'm still waiting for someone to say at least
something in favour of it. I'm not being a dick, I'm genuinely interested.
"One does not simply vote against LTL and ACOS" might get you points or likes on DTF or whatever, but it does not shine a light on me. I say other songs are better and I have argued thus many times in the past or at least tried to do so (those overlong posts are a definite proof of that). I realise music is subjective in the end, but I want to see some arguments at least, guys!
