Agree. I still prefer the production of Falling Into Infinity. What drum sound!

EDIT: as far as the game is concerned, why choose the winner since we have DT's very best moment here? ;)

Thanks to all the voters! This game was super sweet for sure. My most successful Survivor and most popular non-Maiden Survivor ever :D Loved all the long posts and analysis, those will be really hard for me to top in another game. I'm satisfied with the results although lots of my favorites were eliminated. Solid Top 10 with only one stinker (Blind Faith).

Thanks a lot for hosting, NP. I am not satisfied, but that's hardly surprising. If Blind Faith got to No 2 I would be fine with ACOS winning. The fact LTL even got into top 10 made me die a little deep inside.

Very satisfied with the results, though I would personally like to see ITPOE in the top ten.

Cheers for hosting, NP! ACOS is certainly worthy of the top spot, though I would've given it to The Glass Prison. I am satisfied, even though it saddens me that not a single DT ballad made it to the Top Ten - god knows they have many that are worthy.

This game certainly was very in-depth and I loved every second of it. It allowed me to fully analyze each album song by song and listen to them 4-5 times a piece. I am currently doing this same thing in the Opeth survivor, one which I think rivals this survivor in terms of analysis (if not in terms of participation).

I wouldn't know how to participate, although I wanted to. It's simply almost impossible for me to pick better or worse songs there. Or to really analyse. I've heard Ghost Reveries about 35x since summer (while having it on repeat in my car for some time) and I still don't know what to think or what to say or how even some of the songs actually go. Your analyses help somewhat, though. I'm really looking forward to reading assessments of you lot when you get to the Camel period. I'm also looking forward to re-listening the whole discography again going through the thread and reading all the opinions there. In that regard, doing the same with DT will also be awesome. :)

Thanks for hosting! Very fun game. My top ten would be different though. Something more like this:

    1: Octavarium
    2: Scarred
    3: Metropolis 1
    4: Learning to Live
    5: A Change of Seasons
    6: Lines In the Sand
    7: Under a Glass Moon
    8: Illumination Theory
    9: Dance of Eternity
    10: The Bigger Picture

    Mine is pretty similar

    1. A Change of Seasons
    2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
    3. Learning to Live
    4. Metropolis
    5. Octavarium
    6. In the Presence of Enemies
    7. Breaking All Illusions
    8. Raise the Knife
    9. This Dying Soul
    10. The Bigger Picture
  10. Lampwick 43

Lampwick 43 Arriving Somewhere But Not Here

There were a few songs that got eliminated way to soon, but the right song won in the end, so I can't be too upset. I'm also quite glad Blind Faith made it as far as it did.

    Thanks for hosting, Night Prowler!
  11. Black Bart

    Black Bart Ancient Mariner

    Thanks for this survivor thread.

My top ten would include :

    1. Metropolis Pt.1
    2. Learning to Live / ACOS VI-VII medley (OIALT)
    3. Voices
    4. Take the Time

    Changing order possible
    5. Hell's Kitchen / Lines in the Sand
    6. Caught in a Web
    7. Blind Faith
    8. To Live Forever
    9. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
    10. This Dying Soul

Yeah, you're not the only one. It has taken me about 5 years and many listens to differentiate between Opeth songs. My buddy and I tried to review some of their records for our Facebook page and he simply said, "I've listened to this over and over and I still don't know what song I'm listening to." Opeth is very much like classical music, it takes a lot of time to analyze and appreciate. DT is far more obviously memorable in terms of songwriting because, as crazy as it sounds, they try to make each song individualized. Opeth don't write songs, they write movements.
  13. The Flash

The Flash Dennis Wilcock did 9/11

To me this only applies to first three Opeth records. I don't feel the same way about the rest of their discography at all, each song absolutely stands on its own legs and are individualized to me.

I would say from later, from Damnation onwards, but otherwise agree.
  15. Forostar

Forostar Conjure the Death Star again

DT and Opeth survivors won't top this year's editions for a long time, looking at the effort some people have taken. At least, it's hard to imagine they'd start all over again "soon". Same goes for other survivors with mega posts. Some people certainly have inspiration and time these days!
  16. SixesAlltheway

    SixesAlltheway African Dream Pop

Well, it will be a few years before we get DT and Opeth survivors again I guess. At least until one of them releases new stuff and they both did quite recently so :)
  17. Forostar

Forostar Conjure the Death Star again

I don't think members will put the same effort writing such long pieces on older albums. Not in a few years. I suppose these writings will stick with them (and us) for a while and will be used as reference. When opinion changes, adaptions will be made. But I don't think we'll see so much effort in these bands again.
  18. Lampwick 43

Lampwick 43 Arriving Somewhere But Not Here

I'm just curious, Foro, why do you think this? Are you saying that all future survivors won't be as in-depth and have as much effort as these ones, or are you only talking about the next DT and Opeth Survivors?
  19. MrKnickerbocker

    MrKnickerbocker clap hands

I think he means those same survivors, which I can understand. I probably won't go so in-depth on DT or Opeth in the same way, but I do find the in-depth analysis to be interesting and repeatable. Maybe next time I'll focus on something specific instead of overall song and album quality (like focusing my discussion solely on lyrics, or melodies, or bass, etc)
  20. Mosh

Mosh The years just pass like trains Staff Member

Next time I will probably just focus on songs that my opinions have changed on. This one was already pretty interesting as it was my first time listening to some of this music since the peak of my DT fandom. In the case of Opeth, a lot of their greatness is just now being revealed to me. Stuff from the first 5 albums in particular that I hadn't noticed until this survivor. This latest survivor has probably cemented them in my top 5 favorite bands.
