Coronavirus

It's a silly notion and it's getting used all over the world. They'll brand any rise in cases as a spontaneous 'second wave' or a 'localised outbreak' when it's actually an ongoing pandemic that should be treated as such.

Well, we aren't. Nobody in Canada is acting like wave 1 is over, other than a small handful of idiots. But the government and businesses are taking things very seriously, still.

I agree that in the global scale, the pandemic 1st wave is not over yet. However, in some countries I think it is. There were something like 130 tested cases per day in Finland in March, and now there's 0-5. If the number starts rising again rapidly, I think it would mean a 2nd wave would be starting here. The experts have assumed there would be a 2nd wave in the autumn, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

That's not far from the truth, Sinn Fein advocating for lockdown in the early days of the virus was accused of rejecting Britishness

That's the whole point of Sinn Fein, to reject Britishness. What a dumb accusation.

It's looking likely that pubs and restaurants in England will be allowed to re-open to sit-in customers again next month, but they may have to register customers and will be to reorganize their layouts for social distancing purposes.

Looks like social distancing is also going to get brought down to 1m, but confusingly, also suggesting that there'll need to be 'other measures' like wearing a mask.

Seeing as it's the large pub and restaurant chains who seem to be pushing for 1m distancing, I don't think the 'other measures' bit will be entirely popular. Personally I find it a bad idea. I don't believe that the likes of Wetherspoons would run at a loss on half capacity with c.three staff as usual, although they might want to restrict their normally very long opening hours.

Meanwhile the Chancellor is being asked to consider a 4 day working week. The logic behind that is supposedly to do with giving people more leisure time to spend in pubs and hotels. But doesn't that and so mean a big cut to people's incomes? (And probably cramming 5 days of work into 4 days). So it's just going to hit the economy a different way.

Something similar happening here, I haven't been keeping up with the latest details as I'll still be steering clear either way until it's obvious that it's safe to go back, but restaurants only are due to open up soon and there's talk of pubs trying to use this as loophole by reopening and selling food. Also a lot of pushing from publicans to get the social distancing requirement down to 1 metre so they can get more people in.

Some of the conditions for restaurants reopening is a limit on how long people can stay, i.ie you've an hour and half and then you have to leave, which I forsee people lorrying the drink into them during that hour and a half and then refusing to go when their time is up due to being pissed.

I'm certainly not going to a chain pub or restaurant for a long time yet. They will pick up trade from hardcore boozers who don't care, as well as the people like those out our front who are letting all their kids play together and inviting lots of different mates over, but freaking out if the postman walks past in case theiy're carrying coronavirus. But pubs chains (and landlords of pub chains, which is where I think the stronger pressure is coming from) can still expect a lower turnaround. Plus staff/customer scares and potential local lockdowns if there's a rise in cases in the area.

European countries are opening their borders for the tourism and I'm afraid it's a bad idea if the safety and healthy measurements are not garanteed and the virus is still not dissapear and the new cases are rising everywhere. I'm seeing teenagers without masks, people smoking in bar terraces…there won't be quarantine for the tourists. I've seen Napoli people and fanatics celebrating that their football team won a cup in a football match, all without masks without social distancing…like the begining of the first wave of the virus.
We must be prepared for another wave this summer. And I pray for the next autumn and winter. All because the f**ing irresponsable people.

My state, Illinois, has actually done really well in regards to the Coronavirus, all things considered.

Granted, this picture is a week old, but there hasn't been any major spike in cases in that time.

Bars and restaurants are currently open to outdoor seating only, but starting next weekend, indoor dining will be allowed at up to half capacity. I already have tentative plans in place to go out both Friday and Saturday night. :)

MN also looks good here, but I’m waiting for a spike in about a week as all the protesters who infected each other start to spread the virus around again...
