Coronavirus

What a difference government guidance can make. After spending 10 days in Scotland, where mask wearing indoors and social distancing seemed to be followed by everyone, I am back in England (up North at the moment) where things have been left up to the people’s common sense (or lack thereof). The difference in behaviour is striking!

It was odd to watch the Premier League yesterday. Old Trafford was full, 75k. Wonder how that will work out.

Some of the early numbers for vaccination success in the wild are phenomenal - we've successfully taken a disease that was 10x deadlier than the flu (or more) and made it roughly 10x less deadly. In 18 months!

The power of science is incredible.

And yay, the Prime Minister just dissolved Parliament and there will be an election on the 20th of September. In a pandemic. Without understanding how return to school with delta will impact cases. This is insane.

Side effects much more pronounced this time. Fever and headache, and a slight nausea
Pfizer? I've heard a few people say the second shot means business.

Meanwhile, the bribes/incentives to get vaccinated are getting ever more tempting: Middlesbrough FC tickets now!

They need to try something in this area, though, only three quarters of the adult population under this local authority have had at least one jab, despite all over 18s being offered at least one. The rates in the town centre are appalling. There's definitely less take up in areas where the population is younger and/or poorer. Like only half of the adult population in some neighbourhoods has had even the first jab. It's a massive contrast with wealthier areas, and not being able to afford the jab doesn't come into it.

Meanwhile various medical policy makers and authorities are starting to make a little bit more noise abut vaccinating under 18s. Pfizer and now Moderna have been approved for use in 12-17 year olds, but they're only currently being offered to people aged 16 and up, apart from those with certain medical conditions. That the sudden easing of the R rate coincided with schools breaking up for the holidays might just finally be getting taken seriously. The halt in what had been a steep increase in cases over summer has puzzled just about everyone. Notably, though, there are clusters of higher case numbers around popular seaside tourist resorts, which suggests vaccines haven't completely beaten Covid, it's more down to a change in patterns of behaviour and social contact. I wish I had confidence that they are actively monitoring the situation, have thought about precautionary steps to take, and are aware that things could kick off again in autumn.

Smart post, I'd almost consider listening to Lamb of God now.
The reactions to this on social media are appalling. People laughing at this and throwing around all sorts of tin foil hat conspiracies.

Makes you ashamed to be a metal fan.

Makes me ashamed to be a human being.

Beer Fest is being held in Belgrade this week, basically a beer festival with musical performances, probably the biggest festival in Serbia as entry is free. On the day when it was supposed to begin, they announced that you need to show vaccination papers or negative COVID tests at the entrance, and testing was not free for attendees (although there was a discounted promo price). I found great satisfaction in reading Facebook comments of anti-vaxxers losing their minds over this :D

Although I wish I had gone to Bloodstock this year as by all accounts it was amazing, nearly everyone I know who attended came back with The 'Rona so in hindsight I'm glad I stayed at home.

I have been fighting a low grade cold for the past three days and I'm pretty sure it's not COVID, but I'm thinking about going for a test. I'm 100% fine other than some sniffles and coughs, so it's probably not worth going out for, but still.

Defo get a PCR test. Someone I know just came down with Covid and thought nothing but a minor cold until his taste and smell went a bit weird. He's glad he got a test because his mother is clinically vulnerable and he would have visited her. Delta presents differently.
