Coronavirus

@Night Prowler I understand that China and Russia, next to their vaccins, have been exporting their geopolitics to your nation. On top of that, there is lots of desinformation, lots of confusion among Serbian population, leading to too many(!) vaccins, because many people are insecure about what to do.

Bad news. New cases in Norway hit a new high yesterday and hospitalization numbers are on their way back to what they were in April last year.

Fortunately the death numbers aren't rising as much as last time, due to many in the 75+ age group being vaccinated. My dad (76) and my oldest aunt (78) have both been vaccinated now. My mother is 67 and is in the next group.

However, with the rise in hospitalizations, ICU capacity is becoming an issue again.

Jab now booked. I had been expecting I would need to phone and be on hold for half an hour but no, just follow a link in the text to the surgery's booking site, confirm my date of birth and immediately it offers me a choice of appointments for this Saturday. I choose one and tap the link to book it, immediately afterwards I get a text from the surgery confirming the booking. Job done!

How crap are things at the moment, that I am made so happy because something just works and is easy?

"What sad times are these, when the mere functioning of the very necessities of society comes as a pleasant surprise ... and when passing ruffians can give Covid to the elderly at will!"

Say "NI" all you like, as long as you stay at least 2m away from others!

They would be eligible if they were in the UK. We don't know where they are, if health insurance can get it any quicker for them, or if they're registered with a practice that has had enough doses to cover first dose of everyone in that age group. It's now varying tremendously from area to area and even GP practice to GP practice. Paul has got an appointment for his first jab next week (over 50s group) but I keep on hearing of much younger people who aren't carers, health or care workers, and don't have one of the eligible health conditions, who have already had their first or even their second dose.

Covid outbreaks in prisons haven't maybe had as much coverage as they should have. Some of the o0utbreak hotspots in the UK at the moment are centred around prisons, and it's reported the illness rate, severe illness rate, and death rate is higher in prisons when compared to people of the same age groups or with similar underlying health conditions. Poor health in general is thought to contribute, but the overcrowding/cell sharing and inadequate ventilation in ageing buildings surely has to be significant too. Prisoners have been getting locked down in cells for even longer periods with no exercise, too, in an attempt to contain prison Covid outbreaks.

Of course it wouldn't attract public sympathy the way outbreaks in other institutions do, but I wouldn't at all be surprised to see some sort of inquiry in future, being exposed to potentially life-threatening disease isn't part of a prison sentence. You'd think it was possible to quarantine, and control transmission into prisons, but it hasn't been done.

Local city prison experienced an outbreak, prisoners went on strike. Low security prison, a lot of inmates around each other, absolutely minimal sanitary conditions (compared to a normal household) and voila.

The situation in prisons in the UK is outrageous, isn’t it? Priti Patel and her fans probably see this as an excellent outcome though.

I wonder what the conclusion will be regarding the recent cases of thrombosis in people who received the AstraZeneca vaccine. It's a bit strange that it starts to appear now, months after it was rolled out.

Has there been any coverage of this kind of side effect in the UK, where the majority of AZ vaccine doses have been administered?

Not really.

According to this, there have been 5 cases out of more than 11 million.

British product. ;)

But indeed, there is no upset in the UK about this.

Do you mean a vaccine developed at a British university by a team of international researchers, commercialised at the lowest possible cost by a British-Swedish company with a French CEO?

You’d be hard-pressed to find a news agency/channel/newspaper more neutral than the BBC. :)

Anyway, you are free to disagree with the EMA and the scientific experts that have given the green light to the vaccine in the EU too. :D

Had a godawful chat meeting at work today in which a colleague pretty much attacked everyone as 'falling for press hysteria' about covid and saying the vaccine is just an attempt to control people. Another colleague mounted a very rational defence of vaccination, though.
