Coronavirus

Last night our president stated he was covid positive. Dude is hella old and we don't have a vice president, if he does the head of the supreme court takes over.

As far as lock downs, they are not allowing kids under 15 or adults over 60 into places of business. Costco even blasts it on speakers in both english and spanish.

That is what some asocial young(er) adults want here. "Fuck the weak, old and vulnerable, let them stay home, we want to be free at the cost of these groups." Glad I do not live in your country Onhell.

That sort of selfishness is everywhere I think. I don't hear at as much from the really young, tbh, more from people aged 25+, and a few middle aged to 60-somethings who I can only guess are going by life experiences that tell them that nothing bad is ever really allowed to happen.

My colleagues were all sent home from work today, something like 4 covid cases in the workplace.

Indeed, the US gets a lot of shit for how it initially handled the pandemic, but to be honest our government has been no better leaving everything to the individual states.

On related news, as of today the UK is getting even closer to being world-beating in deaths/million population. Currently at #5, right after Gibraltar, San Marino, Belgium and Slovenia.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the 3rd wave!

Are they rioting because they think their futures have been ruined to protect their elders?

Meanwhile in the UK, a government minister says live on TV the world-beating death rate from Covid-19 in the UK is due to an obesity problem and an ageing society. When asked if she was saying the public was "too old" and "too fat", she felt it was insulting and ended up the interview quite abruptly:

You cannot make these things up!

Spain and a lot of EU countries haven't vaccines and it seems that Pharma industries are breaking the contract with the EU and selling them to the best buyer like it happened with the masks in spring of last year with China. It looks that there are a commercial war between countries and continents.
Anyway it looks that now we need a special syringe for the vaccines and we haven't them. The politicians are failing in so many things that all is scary.

Yeah, this is worrying. Either they've made promises they can't possibly keep, or they have sold their stock to a higher bidder. Sad if also not entirely unexpected. I wish they would licence them to other companies to produce if they simply don't have the capacity. I just read that another pharmaceuticals company has decided tp discontinue development of its own vaccine and is instead focusing on drugs for treatment. I'd far rather lots of vaccine options are available, not to mention improved vaccines and boosters for future use. This pandemic is far from over yet.

I actually think there's some truth in obesity being significant in death rates in the UK and US. People over a certain BMI are now classed as higher risk, and I've read a few comments from doctors who were concerned that even being slightly overweight is a risk factor with Covid. Obesity among Americans has been a running joke for years now, but serious obesity is a lot commoner here now too, and far more people are moderately overweight. It's quite scary to see it in some of the children around here. Of course encouraging people to eat out, gulp down coffee full of sugary syrups, and order takeaways to help the economy probably doesn't make things any better.

There's no denying that obesity is a significant risk factor. It is also usually associated with comorbidities (diabetes type 2, cardiovascular disease, etc.) and that makes things much worse for people with Covid-19. However, whilst obesity rates are quite high in the UK, they are not that different to those from other European countries (Hungary, Czech Republic, Ireland, Croatia, Spain...).

What is particular ironic is that the minister took offence when she was asked to confirm what she had just said!

Our president made a deal with putin for a large shipment of their vaccine, Sputnik V. My gf just said, "I don't want a fucking Russian vaccine!" I concur, it hasn't undergone the same scrutiny as the others, but with the supply issues I guess a Russian vaccine is better than no vaccine at all.

The studies have not been released and internationally vetted. So yeah, it is sketchy as fuck to me.

We only seem to have the Chinese vaccine and people are getting vaccinated with it massively.

I will be vaccinated with either Pfizer, AstraZeneca or Moderna vaccine, whichever one is available first. I didn't choose the Chinese or the Russian one in the questionnaire.

I could've selected all 5 options, but then I would've had to get the first one offered (most likely the Chinese one), or pass and not get vaccinated at all.

I also hope to be vaccinated with Pfizer, AstraZeneca or Moderna. I think it won't happen until summer or later. But it won't be a surprise if the government buy the Chinese vaccines as they did with the masks.

@GhostofCain
The rioting folk is probably a mixed bag, People who seek sensation, people who follow along, people who believe consipracy theories, people who are angry at politics, main stream media. It is believed that lots of them are under 25.

These cities have been hit over the last three days (black: weekend / red: Monday night):
