Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 3: Round 1

This is a very, very strong group. Some big guys will "die" here.

MacAlpine

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 3: Round 1

If a Maiden guitarist gets the no. 1 spot I'm going to be rather annoyed. I love those guys and they are extraordinary within the context of the music, Dave Murray is one of my primary inflluences but if any of them wins... Let's just say the result is clearly biased if Maiden gets both best guitarist and vocalist.

You said it pal; context of music. I'm going to be annoyed if anyone except Knopfler and Gilmour got spot above Murray and Smith. There are some guys out there that can work out a miracle out of guitar, but rarely add anything to the song with their solos and licks. For instance, Time by Pink Floyd, just when you get the grasp of lyrics, the solo hits like a stake through the heart. Singing tells a great emotional story, and then guitar solo acts like some sort of fucking divine music telling the same thing, but now somewhere up on the heavenly level. Same goes for Knopfler on Brothers In Arms. Smith on Man Of Sorrows. Sorry, but in those moments, those guys are way beyond anything Satriani or Vai pulled in their sessions.

...and I'm still puzzled how B.B. King got out. Some people here need to brush on their blues.

And #2, Iron Maiden are a group of exceptionally skilled musicians, if there was an objective way to rank musicians (and there isn't because music is art, not mathematics), they would all have their place in Top 50, IMHO. Add to the fact that this latest, longest and greatest line-up is so fucking good - I mean, in top 5 line-ups of all time, in all rock music - add the fact that this is a low-sample poll ran on Iron Maiden fan forums, and they'll easily take top spots in all categories. Fanboyism has nothing to do about it. You can for example think that Peart is the best drummer, or that Bonham is the best drummer, or that McBrain is the best drummer. Whatever you pick, you're right - because there's a portion there that goes with personal taste itself. They all have the necessary musicianship to be called the best. If you called Lars Urlich the best, you'd be wrong. Regardless of taste, he just isn't in the same league.

In any case, all Maiden members are in the first league of rock musicians. They have the requirement for a title of best out there. Like all other guys from that same league.

Someone get Knopfler a round further and vote for the guy from the overrated Australian band.

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 3: Round 1

I am regretting more and more that I didn't suggest Wishbone Ash guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell.

These guys could do this as well. Pay heed to the masters!
