Best Eddie

49. From Fear to Eternity (Grant)
Overall: 5.10/10

I can't say I like this cover very much. There's lots of call-backs to older, better covers in it, which I think is one of its weaknesses. The Dance of Death Eddie is called back in the cloak and scythe, you can see the actual AMOLAD Eddie on the Challenger 2 in the background. There's the tree for Mr. Grant's first cover, of course, and you can see some screaming faces on the left very reminiscent of the Virtual XI cover. Eddie has been torn apart (you can see his guts) like in The X Factor. But my dislike of this cover comes down to one thing.

Why does Eddie have a fucking earring?

48. No Prayer For the Dying - remaster (Riggs)

Overall: 5.21/10

640x640.jpg

I struggled on whether or not to include this Eddie, because it is so very similar to the original No Prayer For the Dying creation. But I made the decision based on one factor - the eyes. In this creation, the eyes and face of the Eddie have either been edited or re-drawn to be more similar to the remaster of Iron Maiden. There is somewhat of a difference between this and the original release, but it's less than half a point, so this was a pretty minor change in the eyes of Maidenfans.

Iron Maiden remaster cover is so ugly. Totally eliminates the raw comic book feel of the original that perfectly represented the music. The new Eddie is more polished and lacks any personality. Just a generic CGI zombie.

My favorite thing about Live At the Rainbow is the coloring but that has nothing to do with Eddie I suppose.

I don’t think it’s terrible outright but otherwise I agree with you. The original was already pretty much perfect and it’s a shame they had to ruin it.

Even though this one comes in higher than many, it also didn't get any 10 votes, much like Holy Smoke. Someone liked it enough to give it a 9, though. Obviously a very hastily drawn Eddie that relies upon the various covers told at this point. The short hair is really odd to me, and the teeth appear, well, almost too white. The robot eye is off-centre, whereas the spark-filled eyes isn't, giving Eddie almost a cross-eyed look. This isn't a very pretty Eddie, and I'm surprised it got this high, especially when much better Eddies (like the Virtual XI Eddie) went low. It's enough to make me think people voted for the songs rather than the Eddie.

This Eddie wasn't even specifically drawn for 12 Wasted Years. It was drawn for use on tours whereby the letters in his mouth could be changed to the names of a city.

It would be interesting if some younger fans could confirm / disagree with your neophyte theory.

Personally I feel the new one lacks the raw charm of the original.

Edit: and thanks for resurrecting one of the best threads on the board ;)

I don't accept that theory either.

If you presented a picture of the mona lisa and a cgi update of the mona lisa that looked more like a real woman, I still think people would pick the original.

My all time favorite Eddie is the Clairvoyant one. The old Eddie writing shit down with the candles. That's my all time favorite Eddie artwork. I think Eddie looks his most menacing when he's calm and composed, and that cover perfectly captures it.

47. The Wicker Man (Wilkinson)

I always like the "Eddie as something else" pictures, from the cloud-Eddie of Brave New World through to this. I think this is really cool. Wilkinson hadn't quite gotten how to draw Eddie properly yet, and making a wicker Eddie was a bit of a challenge for him. All that being said, I still think this is a fun concept if maybe not the best executed. I love the work on the figures in the burning crowd, too. This has been extrapolated a bit, but the original is still pretty cool.

46. Twilight Zone (Riggs)

OK, what is wrong with you guys? Everything else in the image isn't great - specifically the lady, who has a very odd face - but the Eddie? I think the Eddie is a damn masterpiece. Maybe the neck extends a little weirdly but he's a ghost. Again, I like Eddie as not-Eddie, and this ghost has always been a personal favourite. I gave it a 9 (docked a point for the girl's face). However, note the second Eddie (the autographed photo on the right). It very specifically says, "To Charlotte, All my Love, Eddie". So what we are looking at is the only officially published image of Charlotte, as well as a cool Eddie. You people should have given this a much higher vote.

I agree! Or well, it’s really close with LAD’s artwork, but it’s definitely an underrated piece of art that I love a lot!
