Your Maiden blasphemy

I think Dave is doing it cause he can while Jan cause he can't
Jan said in an interview that he doesn't like to play solos verbatim every night, that he likes to have a little freedom of expression, as music is a form of art. So I don't think it's a matter of his skills, just a matter of personal choice.

I know. As a matter of fact Jan was quite accurate when plying the Evil that men do solo with H. However I think he is too careless sometimes. And he lately kind of tends to a similar solo over all songs live.

I revisited No Prayer For the Dying last night for the first time in ages. I'd say that Public Enema Number One is a rather underrated tune. Stupid title, yes. Structurally similar to The Evil That Men Do? Yes. But the vocals are probably some of Bruce's fiercest and the song just rocks. I honestly forgot how killer it was.

My favorite on the album, and one of the best 90's songs.

I'm going to revise a point I said earlier on this thread. Caught somewhere in time DOES have the best solos in Maiden's history.

I have a few that might/might not be unpopular:
- Fates Warning is the best Maiden song of the 1990s.
- When The Wild Winds Blow is the worst Maiden song of the 2000s.

That is really interesting. What I've noticed is people either tend to love it, or are indifferent to it. If you have the time, would love to hear why you consider it the worst.

I loved it when it first came out, but am finding it more and more of a mess as time goes on. Still enjoying it though.

I'd say the most overrated Maiden song of the 2000s has to be Blood Brothers. How in the world did that song survive beyond the album tour over so many other songs is beyond me. The only real highlight for me is Janick's awesome solo. The rest is like a more ballady Clansman only less good.

Agreed. Both solos are utterly spectacular!

Really? Blood Brothers is a 10/10 for me. It has some of my favorite melodies in any Maiden song and the lyrics are some of Steve's best.

I guess that's my unpopular take on it then haha. I don't hate the song but I seriously would rank it pretty much near the bottom from that album. It's just never done much of anything for me.

I've had the opposite reaction. When it first came out, I really didn't care for it. Was probably a 5/10.
It wasn't until I heard the live rendition on En Vivo that I suddenly fell in love with it (funnily enough, the same applies to Blood Brothers, though to a lesser degree) and its now become an absolute favourite of mine, and one of my favourite live performances from Maiden.
Watching the film its based on a few months back also really allowed me to appreciate the tone of the song and how fitting the melodic progression is.

On the topic of unpopular opinions, I strongly believe the weakest songs on the post reunion albums are still far stronger than the weakest songs of 80s era maiden.

New Frontier - song rules. The lyrics I could kind of do without. But the music kicks ass and Bruce sounds great on it. If there's a rocker on the new album that sounds anything like this - and considering that up to this new album that New Frontier was the ONLY reunion era song without a Harris co-writing credit - there may be we'll be in good shape.

I was looking forward to wtwwb as much as I am empire of the clouds now: I only hope it will be better. Wtwwb disappointed me from the jump. It's just too folky. I like the heavier parts. But it's a little too out there. It has grown, and I don't skip it or anything like that.
I believe empire' will be all we expect and way more. Probably wanting to hear this more than any other song.

*and hell yes new frontier is awesome. Most underrated song ever. Lyrics and all. One of my favorite Bruce executions ever!

Completely agree with New Frontier, Bruce sounds great and the verses are very catchy.
I understand that people don't like the lyrics because they don't share the same beliefs, but looking at it from that point of view I think they're quite interesting.

Live After Death is actually a pretty bad recording. Bruce sounds terrible on more than half the tracks and the guitars are incredibly thin and weak-sounding.

I find myself listening to the Hammersmith 84 side more often than the California show...

With Wrathchild, 22 Acacia, Children of the Damned, Die With Your Boots, Phantom and then the live b-sides from Running Free (Live) and Run To The Hills (Live) namely Murders in The Rue Morgue and Losfer Words - we almost have a complete second show from this tour :D

I think there's still some magic there in the recording that I can't quite put my finger on - but yes it weren't his best night. Still - the first proper Maiden live album, it will always be special. Also the booklet is epic.

What DVD do you have? is it the new one with the history of Iron Maiden on it and the extras? Because the old VHS Behind The Iron Curtain (that is part of the extras on the new DVD) also gives an awesome view into the Powerslave tour, with more great performances instead of just California and Hammermsith:

I have that newer one and I watched all of it! The second disc is far better than the LAD concert. Some of the footage isn't as high quality as LAD, but most of the performances are better. Plus, I love the documentaries :)

Agree. Some of those crowds in Poland and Hungary are mental in those recordings! :)

Another thing to take into consideration regarding Bruce and his performance is that those "Iron Curtain" performances were at the start of the tour....The 4 nights at Long Beach Arena was like well into 1985...And they had been on the road a long time when they made those recordings.
