Your Maiden blasphemy

Maiden are great, but to me it's more the sum of the parts than any single element particularly standing out. Okay, maybe Nicko really stands out as a drummer to me.
I agree. Except that for me Bruce stands out as a singer/frontman. But even there I think the match between him and the rest of the guys is stronger than his singing abilities. I always found Maiden's members not working that great outside of Maiden. They often seem a bit awkwardly misplaced when they perform with others. Maybe because I am so used to hearing them together, and the Maiden sound is simply so unique it automatically is weird when they try other stuff.

So yeah, he often has one of the 2 best songs on the album....and one of the two worst.

He has been really consistent since 1999. Gates of Tomorrow is the only weak song he has written the last five albums.
I think "The Mercenary" could have used a little less of the "show them no fear" bits, but I recognize it's technically a very good song, so yeah, I agree with this.

Well, let's go by the Maidenfans.com rankings, rather than personal opinions.
Well, personal opinions -though different from one another- have more reality than something as absurd as an average. ;)

I would agree, but I would have replaced "Gates of Tomorrow" by "The Alchemist".

I think Brave New World is the weakest post-reunion release. I also think of Virtual XI as a sister album to BNW. If you had Bruce sing in VXI, Nicko on drums instead of Steve and a better production, the actual song writing would sound very similar to BNW.

Definitely. I can also hear Blaze singing a lot of BNW.

I don’t think BNW is weak though.

To be clear, BNW isn’t a weak album at all. It’s just the weaker of a series of very strong post-reunion albums to me. Dance of Death has high highs and lower lows. And the theee after that, to me, are amazing. Book of Souls is probably my second fave album after 7th son.

In my opinion, the first four songs of BNW are great, probably one of the best "first four" run in the IM studio catalogue. Afterward though, I don't feel there is much worth coming back to.

Also, my favorite track on BNW is far and away "Nomad." I couldn't believe they picked Dream of Mirrors as a live track over Nomad, except to say DoM is much easier to sing and repetition is great for audience participation.

I don't see anything blasphemous about that. Of the folks who can dig on the Blaze albums, it's not uncommon to see folks prefer the more positive/inergetic VXI as the superior album.
I always thought the general consensus -here at least- was that VXI has mostly crap songs apart from The Clansman, while TXF has all the "hidden gems" in the Maiden discography, along with its "dark" atmosphere
