Who will carry the torch?

Not any single band. But if you're into other metal genres or if you are a music fan in general, then there are many new talented bands putting out music these days.

About Revelations, I've read an interview with Bruce in the french metal mag "Enfer" ("Hell"), back in 1984. The whole discussion was around Revelations lyrics, which he was trying to explain to the journalist. And, I'm sorry for that, but it was just pretentious. I'm not stupid enough to deny that some passages are just pure poetry, but the meaning he put behind them was just pure non-sense. And musically, I perfectly agree with what Forostar wrote somewhere. This is rather boring, there is not much variation, and some riffs are just common metal.
As for Quest for Fire, the song is (as often with Steve) insipred by a movie : I assume Steve perfectly knew dinosaurs and men didn't walk the earth simultaneously (if he did ignore that, Bruce could have told him, as he certainly knew that), but he just wanted to respect the atmosphere of the movie. And, I (as many of you I'm sure) prefer a guy who couldn't go to college and has some serious lacks in culture than a guy who thinks (and writes songs to claim that) that all girls are sluts born to be fucked or that Satan will soon rule the world.

Thanks for this rare pro-Quest for Fire talk. I always loved the song because of its music but what you say about the lyrics makes sense as well and now we finally have some gunpowder vs the haters. :)
Honestly never knew about the movie, and the year of release certainly sounds as one 'Arry could be inspired from.

(however; I still don't see why Steve gets the dinosaurs in because they are not in the film??)

:okok:

As I've mentioned before on other threads, Quest for fire is awesome!! It was one of my favorites off Piece' at first listen.  No hate at all, ever for Quest, or the fact that the song has a flawed lyric or two historically speaking.  But don't rant against Revelations, not here.  Revelations is not as deep musically as TTAL or others, of course not.  But that simplicity is one [of many] strong points about it.  Metal does not always have to be cranked up, blackened  versions of Mozart.
Revelations is simple, but excellent. It is a couple catchy riffs, some deep and inspiring lyrics, and unblemished execution.  To me it represents the band beautifully, as does the entire Piece of Mind album.  Perfection.

I prefer Steve as a song writer too. That's not what I'm picking up on. What I am saying is, Revelations is a brilliant song. I have no idea what Bruce said after he wrote it, nor do I care. The song is a cracker and if it wasn't they wouldn't have played it live as many times as they have.

I really hope you're right about Steve knowing dino's and men didn't co-exist :)

I've made a mistake about the movie Quest for Fire : I was absolutely sure Jean-Jacques Annaud had adapted it from a former movie (and I was thinking of this late version for the men and dinosaurs), but in fact, it is based upon a book from 1911. I don't know if Steve has read the book in question. Nethertheless, I'm quite sure he knew about the huge chronological gap. Plus "dinosaurs" could have been employed for all huge and "monstrous" animals from the past, like the (I don't know the exact word) tigers with long teeth we see in the movie. Anyway, Forostar, I'm happy to see someone who appreciate this song. I would never listen to Piece of Mind without listening to this particular song, and Dave has long named its fantastic solo as his favourite.

Same here. Quest For Fire I find better than Revelations, Where Eagles Dare, Sun and Steel and Still Life.

Really? That's interesting. I find Adrian's solo in particular one of his best ever.
Raw, focused and very catchy, all at the same time!

I have absolute respect for people's taste and have said so many times on this forum, I must admit though I laughed quite a bit to Quest for Fire being touted as better than Where Eagles Dare, Revelations an Still Life. Keep it up ;)

Sorry to interupt whatever you guys are doing, with this and that...

harrisdevot (& Forostar) --seriously, what in the hell are you talking about!? Are we all talking about the same song & lead work here? QfF: Dave says this "fantastic" solo is his personal favourite, from all the solo/lead work he has ever written or performed for IM?! Come on. When did he say this? And, Forostar --you must be on the Christmas drink early or something! H's solo on QfF "one of his best ever" --you two jokers, you almost had me going with your leg-pulling...  :D

Just dust off the track and listen to it yourself. It's really wonderful I think. If you don't, that's fine with me.
:)

I used to listen to QFF, specially the solos, like 20 times in a row when I first got POM, back in 1990. It was a cassette I made from an english course series called Follow Me. Adrian's solo is one of his best, indeed.

Don't need to dust it off Forostar; just can't believe, of all H's leads, you think this is one of his best. And - sorry, not going to let his one go - where did Davey say this was his favourite solo?

CriedWhenBrucieLeft, you don't seem to be very trustful. I'm absolutely sure to have read this, because it suprised me. The problem is I've have collecting articles and interviews since I'm a Maiden fan and it's a lot of paper to check. But I will try to find it and giveyou a scan. Anyway, this was obviously a long time ago, and his opinion has surely changed.

That's it. This is taken from a very short interview with Davey. The question I based my statement upon is the third from the bottom. Do you find it convincing ? Obviously, this is a promo interview for Piece of Mind, so, he was kind of due to name a POM solo, but he could have picked others, and I think he was really proud of his work on Quest for Fire.cus10021.jpg
