The Man Who Would Be King

So I start the song...  It was the song I've wanted to hear since I saw the track list and heard the samples.

Lets see if it was worth it.
Holy shit.

Attaboy, Maiden.

Can't wait till tomorrow, when there isn't family asleep in the house, so I can crank the volume up on this song to the max, and have a good rock out  :shred:

That was a quick 11 minutes. Isle of Avalon feels like forever compared to this.

Like I said, I was busy with the music for “When The Wild Wind Blows” for some years.

I wonder how long "some years" really was. Since '86 maybe?

The Man Who Would Be King

The first 3:20 seconds. I got tired. Anyone want to do the rest?

Have you heard what they said on the news today
Have you heard its coming to us all
That the world as we know it will be coming to an end
Have you heard, have you heard.

He sees them in the distance when the darkened clouds role
He can feel tension in the atmosphere
He would look into the mirror see an old man now
Doesn’t matter they survived somehow

They said there is nothing can be done about the situation
There is nothing that you can do at all
To sit and wait for something to occur
Did you know, did you know.

As he stares across the garden looking at the meadows
Wonders if they’ll ever grow again
The desperation of the situation getting graver
Getting ready when the wild wind blows

Have you seen what they said on the news today
Have you heard what they said about us all
Do you know what is happening to just everyone of us
Have you heard, have you heard

There will be a catastrophe the like we’ve never seen
There will be something that will light the sky
That the world as we know it will never be the same
Did you know, did you know

He carries everything into the shelter now ____
Getting ready when the moments comes
He has enough supplies to last them for a year or two
Good to have because you never know

They tell him nothing that we don’t already know about
They tell us nothing that is real at all
They only tell us the stuff that they want
Did you know, did you know

He carries everything into the shelter now, but first
Getting ready when the moment comes
He has enough supplies to last them for a year or two
Good to have because you never know

They tell him nothing that we don’t already know about
They tell us nothing that is real at all
They only fill us with the stuff that they want
Did you know, did you know?

He's nearly finished with the preparations for the day
He's getting tired;  that'll do for now
They are preparing for the very worst ____ them
Getting ready when the wild wind blows

He sees the picture on the wall, it's falling down
Upside down
He sees a teardrop from his wife roll down her face,
Saying Grace
Remember times they had, they flash right through his mind
Left behind
(All?) we laughed and spent together long ago
Will be gone

They've been preparing for some weeks now
'Till when the crucial moment comes
To take their refuge in the shelter
Let them prepare for what will come

They make a tea and sit there waiting
They're in the shelter feeling snug
Not long to wait for absolution
Don't make a fuss; just sit and wait

Can't believe all the lying,
All the screams are denying
That the moments of truth have begun

Can't you see it on the T.V.?
Don't believe them in the least bit
Now the days of our ending have begun

Say a prayer when it's all over
Survivors unite, all as one
Got to try and help each other
Got the will to overcome

I can't believe all the lying,
All the screams are denying
That the moments of truth have begun

Can't you see it on the T.V.?
Don't believe them in the least bit
Now the days of our ending have begun

When they found them, had their arms wrapped around each other
The tins of poison laying near by their clothes
The day they both mistook an earthquake for the fallout,
Just another when the wild wind blows...

The Man Who Would Be King

(Survivors, you're not always one?) = Survivors unite, all as one

I can't believe all the lying,
All the screams are denying
That the moments of truth have begun

The Man Who Would Be King

Thanks, it's fixed now.

Am I the only one who feels like they just kinda threw the whole twist/climax/end into the one line "The day they both mistake an earthquake for the fallout"?

The Man Who Would Be King

In my opinion the earthquake twist ending doesn't add anything to the song. It might not make it worse, but I don't really prefer it.

The Man Who Would Be King

I think it could have been a great ending if they played it out more. The movie/book ending is more bleak. But that's my only gripe with this amazing song. It may even overtake TTAL on my list of favorite songs... :o

The Man Who Would Be King

Fantastic transcription!!

Only thing I caught was:

The day they both mistook an earthquake for the fallout,
Just another when the wild wind blows...

The Man Who Would Be King

The rhythm at 6:45 is awesome! Man, I wish Bruce was singing those parts higher to sound a little more....passionate, i guess.

I listened and felt "feeling of hope" in this song then thought WTF there should not be hope. It's the end of the world. Now I realise it's surprised at the end of the story. Steve had given "feeling of hope"  every moment of the song. He is a real genius.

Wow. What a fantastic song. I absolutely loved every second, every riff, every line. Just brilliant.
If this turns out to be a swansong, then what a song it is.

First post.

Bloomin' loved this song. I loved the way that the vocals matched the guitar in the intro. It felt like we were being lifted gently to when the heavy part would kick in, and boy, whta a melody. This song is easily one of Maidens greatest triumphs. I was worried that this album wouldn't end as well as AMOLAD, but I really do think this song is a much better song than 'The Legacy'. Maiden have had some really great album closers, but I'd put this up there with the best of them.
