Vancouver '10 Games

So after seeing the ski cross skier from Jamaica I started researching the country's participation in the Winter Olympics and quite a few warm weather nations have participated. What blew my mind was this:
Main article: Ice hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics – Men's qualification

The Mexico men's national ice hockey team were ranked 38th in the IIHF World Ranking and participated in the first round of the qualification tournament in Ankara, Turkey. The team defeated Spain, 5–4, and Turkey, 9–2, but lost to Bulgaria, 2–6. With a 2–1 record they tied with both Spain and Bulgaria, but Spain advanced to the second round by scoring more goals.[7]

It would have been awesome to play against the U.S hahahahaha

Ups and downs for the Norwegian athletes yesterday. The ski jumpers secured a bronze medal in the team competition right ahead of Finland, after a slow start. Anders JAcobsen, our last man jumping, was held back twice due to the wind conditions in the bottom of the hill. Great that he managed to keep his cool and deliver his best jump in these Olympics. Of course, there was not much to do about Austria, the only team that actually have four jumpers who are all, on a good day, candidates to win individual competitions.

Then the women's cross-country team sprint, where our girls finished fifth after being involved in an accident in the first lap (one of the other runners fell, and ours had to stop to avoid falling on top of her). They never managed to catch up with the front four.

Then, finally, a gold medal for the men's cross country team. Øystein Pettersen and Petter Northug got their revenge after several strikes of bad luck earlier in the Olympics (Pettersen when the finalist from Belarus fell right in front of him in the men's individual sprint, Northug when he had his pole broken just a kilometer from finish on the 30 km). They both seemed really, really pleased with the victory  :D

My tip for the 10.000:

Gold: Kramer
Silver: Bøkko
Bronze: Fabris

The question is, how big will the gap between Kramer and the rest be this time?

Other exciting events tonight: Men's giant slalom and women's 4*6 km biathlon relay (where I guess Germany and Russia will fight for 1st, Sweden are favourites for the bronze and the Norwegian team might end anywhere from 4th to 6th).

No Canadians in the event. Aw well...hockey!

Good luck against Germany. As if you need that. We could use some against Slovakia, though. Since that match is 6AM tomorrow, Central European Time, it means I'll get up early and consume unspeakable amounts of coffee while watching it.

I'm sad that Norway has to come up against Slovakia. I think the Slovaks are still a dark horse in the tourney, but it really does look like Norway will go home.

I see Bøkko now, in a TV-documentary/interview, hunting birds with two friends in Norwegian hills, near some beautiful fjords. He says: "If we don't hunt, we get too many birds, and eventually they will kill each other." (This doesn't sound that smart to be honest, I mean, why shoot birds if they will kill each other in the end, anyway?)

He also said: "This is also good for my skating condition, my legs."

Bøkko I find one of the funniest names in sports. It sounds like "bukken", which means in English "bending down"/"stooping".

This Korean guy (Lee), he's the dark horse, and might surprise one or two skaters!
HORRIBLE!

Sven Kramer took the wrong lane (unbelievable!)

And is disqualified......!

He must have been in a trance.. another theory is that his coach sent him from the inner lane to the outer lane. Dramatic mistake, I'm shocked. Especially because he was so good.

I just saw images of Kramer cursing his coach, terribly angry with him. They sat apart. And he walked away with thunder on his face.

Probably Kempers pointed at that lane, and shouted something. This is really a shocking drama for our little skating nation.

another edit: Just heard that people said that they heard Kramer saying, later in the hall: "What as asshole, he sent me in the wrong lane!".

Yes, the skater has control over his body. But he was in a trance, and his coach woke him suddenly up and sent him in the wrong lane. That's the short summary. I feel bad for Kramer but perhaps even worse for his coach. Just saw an interview with Sven where his anger merged into sadness. A big man that he still gave that interview, and he also said this might not be the end of the long collaboration with his coach. Tomorrow they'll meet again in the team skating. It's going to be a weird day.

Oh no, Kramer :( That sucks, I was pulling for him to medal.

Watching some Ladies' Ski Cross - fantastic races so far, difficult conditions though!

So it was. We are out, but - in my humble opinion - with flying colours. We gave the Slovaks a really good match.

Ole Christian Tollefsen's bad elbow tackle on Lubos Bartecko proved costly, though. What a stupid thing to do. I was happy to hear Bartecko wasn't seriosly injuried (he suffered a concussion). Not only did we have to play shorthanded for five minutes (which cost us two conceded goals), we also lost one of our best backs. What was he thinking? Our squad wasn't packed with quality backs before this match, and when one of the best is sent off after five minutes, the workload on the others grows. Too much, it seemed. In the 3rd period we gave away space several times just because our backs were tired - I think that's also the reason why Miroslav Satan got so much time to aim when he scored the winner.

Anyway, losing with one to Slovakia is quite good for this team. I think the boys should be pleased with their efforts today.

As for the other events yesterday: I must say I was quite disappointed with Bøkko on the 10 000 m - I really had expected him to do better. On a normal day, he should've been able to follow Bob de Jong. Still, the big shock was Kramer's mistake. When he so clearly was the best, it must feel extremely disappointing to be disqualified.

The women's biathlon team didn't do bad. 4th was just about what I had expected from them, and when Neuner didn't go for Germany it was no surprise that Russia won.

Yesterday saw three Norwegian medals, though: Silver to Hedda Berntsen in women's ski cross, and siilver and bronze to Kjetil Jansrud and Aksel Lund Svindal, respetively, in the men's giant slalom. Jansrud came from 11th after the first run!

Tonight is the highlight of cross-country in the Olympics: The men's 4*10 km relay. Norway have won it frequently, but disappointed big time four years ago, with a 5th place. I don't really know what to expect tonight, because the two skiers who will take the classical legs (the first two) haven't really been shining so far in the Olympics.

In the different women's events tonight, Norway don't have any candidates for the podium. Maybe Maren Haugli can do a decent 5000 m, but if she finishes top 3 I'll fall out of my chair  :D

We'll have to work on your hockey terminology, EW.

Canada gave Germany the prescribed whipping, and now we see a classic hockey rivalry tonight when they face Russia. The hockey history between Russia and Canada goes back a long time, but it apexes in 1972, 1989, and 1992, with a minor installment in 2006. We'll see what happens...Canada can do it. I still believe.

*about Vonn*

she's the biggest celebrity in the U.S. among all the Olympians, as well she should be.

I wouldn't be to sure about that. Today she decided to taste snow again. Not the first time in these Olympics.

Shaunn White is a bigger celebrity than Vonn, hell even Bode Miller, but Ohno has been getting major billing for a while. Honestly, this is the first time I noticed (keyword) Vonn getting this much publicity and I think it is mainly due to her injury which all the other skiers are saying "big fing whoop" about it as so many of them ski hurt and don't see any reason to publicize it.

Period 1 of Canada vs. Russia is over...and Canada is winning 4-1. They're finally doing it. They're finally playing as a team. So far this game reminds me of game 4 of the Summit Series - when Canada finally got their shit together. All four lines are rolling hard, big hits, big plays, lots of shots.

It's not over till it's over - Russia has a great combination of offensive players. But it looks good for the boys with the maple leaves on their chests.
Canada is up 7-3, and the Russians got goals on Canadian mistakes - I think that this is a sign, but Russia can score 4 goals in a period. I hope the boys keep rolling and smack the shit out of those Russians. Send AO home crying.

OH, I hafta find this game!

I was coming home thinking I'd be able to watch Canada vs US in women's hockey.  I hafta wait til tomorrow.

As a thought, we were talking about how many medals earlier, but I think we forgot the fact that some sports have multiple medal winners - relays, hockey, curling, bobsleigh...it must be at least 500 medals total.

White is very popular and probably makes more money, and he was certainly more famous up until about six months ago.  But Vonn got the cover of Sports Illustrated's Olympics preview -- and was in the swimsuit issue a week later! -- and she was also on all the major talk shows leading up to the Games.  Americans love her because is the best in the world in the coolest Winter Olympic sport (downhill), and she either wins or wipes out, no settling for silver or bronze with her.  Ohno was the big celebrity one or two Games ago (and got the SI cover this past week) but he has a rep for racking up his medal total with a bunch of "first loser" and "second loser" medals in a fringe sport no one in the U.S. cares about.  The press has been trying to make him a star for a while, but to us, a bunch of silvers and bronzes (in addition to two golds, to be fair) don't compare to, say, Eric Heiden's FIVE golds.

Canada is up 7-3.
Fun game to watch.  Canada's going to win, they're just dominating.  Just showed a replay of Ovechkin eliminating Canada in Turin -- revenge must be sweet.  Here's hoping Canada makes it to the gold medal game..............AND LOSES TO THE U.S. AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

EDIT:  Clutch save by Luongo on a breakaway by Malkin.  Good choice replacing Brodeur with him.  LC -- would you stick with Luongo the rest of the way?  I assume so, but Brodeur is a legend.  Reminiscent of Germany replacing their legendary keeper Kahn in the last World Cup.

Thanks for the link, but no access for me.  Just not in the cards for tonite.  the only feed that I could find that was actually streaming on justin.tv wasn't working worth a shit.  ah, well, seems like Canada is in for the win!
