Vancouver '10 Games

Tonight: Men's biathlon, 4*7,5 km relay! The event will be a showdown between the usual suspects; Germany, Russia, France, Norway.

Norway will be screaming for vengeance tonight, after the disappointing relay in Turin 4 years ago - where we were even beaten by Sweden, in a sport where we've been better than them since Adam and Eve were chased out of the garden. So far in the Vancouver games, it's been ups and downs for the Norwegian biathlon team. Maybe the biggest disappointment is Ole Einar Bjørndalen's abysmal shooting. His skiing has been good (among the best, as usual), but his shooting has been well below average, except for on the 20 km where he finished second.

The Norwegian team will consist of veteran Hallvard Hanevold (a rock steady shoot, but his age has taken its toll on his speed), newcomer Tarjei Bøe who has never been part of the team in a major tournament, and the two medalists from the 20 km. To me, the biggest uncertainty is whether Bjørndalen has managed to use his lack of success this far as a motivational factor, instead of letting it demotivate him. When he's at his best, no one can match him, but the margins are small in biathlon ...

I just hope the Norwegian team won't do as they did on the 15 km mass start, where they obviously were shooting moose rather than the targets.

I'm also looking very much forward to the ice hockey semi-final between Finland and USA. The other semi-final, between Canada and Slovakia, is too late for me.

I doubt the NHL will stop releasing players for the Olympics. If they're serious about marketing themselves in Europe it would be the worst possible move, and I'm sure quite a few European players - especially Russians - would head back home.

They already open the season in Europe and increase the amount of games in Europe too. Didn't they open with 8 games in Sweden, England and Finland this season? But they are in shaky ground indeed.

Tonight some important matches! Go Slovakia! (one of the countries that didn't care/know about the NHL while under socialist rule...

That's not true. Slovakia was very aware of the NHL. Just go ask Peter Stastny and his brothers, or Stan Mikita.

And I'm obviously pulling for Canada.

That's not what the current roster of Czech's and Slovaks have said on NHL.com interviews.... Any way, whatever. GO CANADA! My wish list is Canada gold, Finland another silver and Slovakia Bronze

A golden medal for Nicolien Sauerbreij from the Netherlands!  :yey:

For Snowboard, Parallel Giant Slalom!! Snowboarding? Yeah, someone from the flattest country in the world did it!
A very historical medal since it was the 100th gold medal in the history of the Olympic Games for the Netherlands, and the FIRST EVER alpine medal. Amazing!

Wow. I was watching the biathlon 4*7.5 km relay, and just switched by the semi-final. Okay, it was 1-0 to the USA.

Then, some 20 minutes later, as the relay was approaching finish, I checked the hockey again. My instant reaction was:  :bigsurprise:

By the way, GREAT performance by our biathlon team, and the second gold in the men's biathlon relay ever for Norway!  :yey:

6-1 over Finland.  The Americans OWN Finland in Olympic medal round hockey games.  (1980)

Boom.

I don't get why the U.S calls itself an "underdog" when they clearly fielded a potent club. The weakest of the big 4? likely, but an underdog? give me a break, just a look at their roster was enough to know they would make it this far.

I was watching the Canada vs. Slovakia game... kind of disapointing, Canada let Slovakia come back and gain momentum, but able to hold on for a win... Everybody's wish came true: another USA vs. Canada Olympic final. In '02 Canada beat the U.S in home soil.... dun dun DUN.

Where did Ohno place? silver? 4th? He had two races did he not? Congrats on Canada for more Gold.

It was definitely a decent day for Canada yesterday with 4 medals, 2 golds, a silver, and a bronze.

ALMOST everybody's :p I know MY dream came true of seeing a Czech vs Slovakia game :)

I've had this idea for a cheesy movie/series set in Czechoslovakia circa 1980's with family that moves around with one son born in modern day Czech Republic and another in modern day Slovakia, so when the countries split in the early 90's one is Czech and one Slovak. They both grow up playing hockey and then, one day they meet at the Olympics (did I mention they are both Centermen?) and as they crouch down for the face off, the oldest tells his younger brother... "I may be your brother, but today you are my ENEMY!"  The focus of the movie, though it would be better as a series, would be to spotlight the countries' history, politics, and how it affected millions of ordinary citizens (kind of like the East/West Germany) with lots of hockey of course :D

Canada is leading the medal list!

After 77 (of 86 medals):      G   S   B   T

2. Germany                        9  11   7  27
3. USA                              8  13  13  34
4. Norway                          8   6   6  20

10. Netherlands                  4   1   2   7

The Russians are having (one of) their worst Olympics ever.

Possible for a gold in Men's Team Pursuit - we made the final pairing against the US!

Also, our 4 man bobsleigh team is 2nd right now…so it's not over yet.

Um... that is not how the medal count is being counted... They are going by TOTAL medals, not most gold, thus the U.S leads, followed by Germany. That is what NBC is showing, so unless they are doing their own thing, the U.S leads.
I watched the Woman's Curling final in Canda vs. Sweden and it was great to see women do what they do best at their best... SWEEP! HEYOOOOOOOO! Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week! :p

Honestly, interesting game, I never got it, but it's the first match I watch in its entirety

I disagree with you, Onhell. Focusing on the gold is the only way.

Hmm I remember we had this discussion before.  :D

(and about the sweeping, don't worry, I don't think any woman will read that. ;) )

And gold it is! Congrats!

I have a double feeling about this, because the Netherlands is the best team. They are the world champions (last three times) and the world record owners, and they just won the race for the bronze medal, in an Olympic record, faster than Canada and the USA.

But they fucked it up in the semis, yesterday.

edit:

Amazing: The German women won gold but it actually looks like Japan won or at least: raced the same time.
The difference of 0,02 seconds can absolutely not be the case, because then there would be a clearer difference in cm. If the Japanese are smart they should protest.

And the American coach of the women, Parra, is completely NUTS. He took out the best woman, and replaced her with his friend, who also wanted a medal. Result: Bronze: Poland. 4th place: USA.  :nuts2:
That guy will be fired for sure.

And here a present for the Wingman. ;)

I know! I was very confused when NBC showed the Medal count with the US at the top for most MEDALS rather than most GOLD. That's what is done in the summer games. I remember the US threw a hissy fit because in the Beijing games they had the most medals, but China had the most Gold and they argued it should be by total... um... hello U.S it has never been that way. I'll pay attention today during the Men's Hockey final.

Gold for Canada's Men in Curling. Norway's uniform looked like a Golf outfit :D
