I said it back when they dropped Biden (and the first alleged assassination attempt) that Trump had the edge. I've read that one of the main Google searches on election day was "did Biden drop out?", signaling that many of the electorate may not have even been aware of Kamala.
But simply put, the Dems fucked it. Their entire campaign was "Trump bad" with all the focus on him instead of their policies. And Trump played the media like a fiddle, dominating the narrative with his weird stunts like dancing on the spot and saying incredibly stupid, attention grabbing things.
And Kamala repeated the mistakes of Clinton in 2016. Big celebrity endorsements might seem like a good idea but that's not going to connect to Joe the trucker from Bumfuck, USA. Joe's bills have doubled and billionaire Taylor Swift isn't going to convince him but Trump says he'll stop inflation (he won't) and that's more appealing.
She should have campaigned in red states, showing up at factories or truck stops, not doing big events with Beyonce. And now Trump has absolute power.
The only silver lining is that he's 78 and possibly won't even make it through a full term. And unlike a regular Republican, MAGA revolves around him and, like how the Third Reich died with Adolf, MAGA will die with him. Once he's gone the GOP will eat itself and presuming the Dems can find a new Obama, they could take it back in 4 years. But that's a big if.
In the meantime, things are going to get rough for anyone who isn't a cis male. Say goodbye to women's rights for starters. And as for Ukraine or Gaza? I don't even want to think about it.
As a straight, white Scotsman, I'll be fine. Trump is half Scots himself (we apologise as a country) so I'm not worried much for the future. But for any reasonable Americans, brace yourselves. To those who voted Trump, you'll get what you asked for.
