USA Politics

It wouldn't have mattered before either. No amount of facts would ever convince someone who went so far down the rabbit hole that they'd unironically talk about "live birth abortions" to change their mind and vote differently.

I can be pretty petty and vindictive but I won't be able to throw it back in their faces and gloat once they start suffering from the consequences of their actions because I understand that Trump will impact the entire world negatively (economy, Ukraine, Gaza, and my highest priority: climate change).

Sure, it is futile and arguably a waste of time. On the other hand I have a bit of time and it's not like I can do anything else at the moment to change whatever happened.

There's plenty of stuff happening in Germany right now to gloat about. I've been having a great time since last night.

Judging of how "positively" Biden influenced the above and more, I can't wait for some Trump negative impact.

Can I throw this post back at you once we've seen what happened? Pretty please and thank you?

Well, fuck.

That sums it all up.

I was unpleasantly surprised when Trump was elected back in 2016, shocked when he was voted by that many people again in 2020, and absolutely horrified that he has won the election in 2024.

Essentially, the USA have elected a xenophobic, sexist, narcissistic fascist who is also a convicted felon as their president. Let's hope there are some control mechanisms in place to keep this deranged unhinged dangerous individual in check.

True that. Lindner getting dismissed and a verbal beat down by Scholz of all people was long overdue. Wissing left the party earlier today, so watching the FDP finally fade into irrelevancy after sabotaging the Ampel for three years is at least something.

I'll second that.

I never would have thought a speech by Scholz of all people would feel cathartic, but there it was.

Anyway, I think we still have a European politics thread somewhere, so we could carry this there, although I doubt anybody else here would care.

The thing with Trump, is I can understand why people back his policies, I don't agree with them of course, but I can understand a person making a decision on strict policy grounds. What I don't understand is how they can go "this is our guy, this is the one we want to implement our policitcal vision" because the guy is clearly a sack of shit and a dangerous sociopath. He should have been nipped in the bud and never got near the Republican nomination.

On the same basis, I can't understand anyone who doesn't agree with his policies, sitting on the fence on this one because maybe they don't agree with some Democrat policies too. Harris is at least not a dangerous sociopath.

Apathy screwed the Dems. Conservatives show up, no matter what. The same can't be said about progressives unfortunately.

Another thing I can't understand is how some folks like the Latinos rewarded Trump with the majority of their vote after being attacked and made fun of by him and his campaign partners. Yeah, I get that many Hispanics are very religious and conservative, but Trump had an openly xenophobic campaign. I'm sorry, but when the time comes you won't be seen as "one of the good ones".

People have such short memories and don't remember how insane many of Trump's actions were in his first administration. They only remember prices being better and think Trump will solve that, despite him having promised tariffs which will explicitly raise prices and might even lead to another recession. God, I'm so frustrated by how shortsighted many voters are.

Emotional voting. (See also Brexit)

You can spend years drafting sensible policy, making concessions to voters with slightly differing views, and paying PR gurus to help you perfect your pitch.

But if people have a gut feeling, see all their mates running in one direction, or want to stick it to 'Woke' or whoever or whatever is the enemy at that time, they vote with feelings not carefully considered reason.

I said it back when they dropped Biden (and the first alleged assassination attempt) that Trump had the edge. I've read that one of the main Google searches on election day was "did Biden drop out?", signaling that many of the electorate may not have even been aware of Kamala.

But simply put, the Dems fucked it. Their entire campaign was "Trump bad" with all the focus on him instead of their policies. And Trump played the media like a fiddle, dominating the narrative with his weird stunts like dancing on the spot and saying incredibly stupid, attention grabbing things.

And Kamala repeated the mistakes of Clinton in 2016. Big celebrity endorsements might seem like a good idea but that's not going to connect to Joe the trucker from Bumfuck, USA. Joe's bills have doubled and billionaire Taylor Swift isn't going to convince him but Trump says he'll stop inflation (he won't) and that's more appealing.

She should have campaigned in red states, showing up at factories or truck stops, not doing big events with Beyonce. And now Trump has absolute power.

The only silver lining is that he's 78 and possibly won't even make it through a full term. And unlike a regular Republican, MAGA revolves around him and, like how the Third Reich died with Adolf, MAGA will die with him. Once he's gone the GOP will eat itself and presuming the Dems can find a new Obama, they could take it back in 4 years. But that's a big if.

In the meantime, things are going to get rough for anyone who isn't a cis male. Say goodbye to women's rights for starters. And as for Ukraine or Gaza? I don't even want to think about it.

As a straight, white Scotsman, I'll be fine. Trump is half Scots himself (we apologise as a country) so I'm not worried much for the future. But for any reasonable Americans, brace yourselves. To those who voted Trump, you'll get what you asked for.

How is possible that one guy with 66 pending trials( I heard it yesterday) can apply for candidate and be the president of the 1st power in the world –until now– ?
Hipocresy of the Dems supporting the genocidal guy with guns and money and smiling as if nothing happened. Laughing at rest of the world face.

But I'm worried about the twitter guy who wants to control all over with rockets and satellites and spreading uninformation and supporting idiots in the net like him.

But I'm going to keep calm right now.

That's actually something I've been thinking about too much lately. The guy will die sometime within the next ten years, because that's what old people do, but no matter when and how, his devotees will claim he was murdered.

He's lived his whole life in extreme wealth I wouldn't be surprised if he lasts longer than you think
