USA Politics

Lost popular vote twice!
Benjamin Harrison managed that as well as JQA. Both men ran for re-election, and like Donald, were beaten the second time out as well. Rutherford Hayes didn't run for re-election, he was subsumed on the ticket by James Garfield. Garfield won a plurality and a bullet to the abdomen.

Well, for the moment we still have a republic and not a monarchy — if we can keep it.

I wonder, wether the term “democracy” could even have a negative connotation in some US people because of “the democrats”? Democracy means: the people rule! Also, democracy is by definition a part of the “res publica” and vice versa.

I've always found it funny that the two main parties in the US are called the Democratic party (aren't most Americans in favour of democracy anyway?) and the Republican party ( how many monarchists are there in the US?) ...

What is the opposite of democracy? Dictatorship?

Edit: 1984 by George Orwell should be essential reading at school!

In the end, is all this bullshit about money?

In order to keep the machine running, he needs to fuel the idea that the election was stolen and that he will continue as President after January 20th. As someone wrote on another forum: "Send 50 bucks so that my lawyers can come up with breaking news on how the Dems stole the election!"

Because if Trump doesn't actually believe there was cheating on such a scale that a court will overturn the result in enough states, the only reason for him to replace high-ranking staff (like the Secretary of Defense) and delaying transition activities - is to make his fans believe that he has a realistic chance of overturning the result and continuing as President.

One thing's for certain. If this happened in a country without the US's long tradition of peaceful transition of power between administrations, we would conclude that a coup d'état was on the stairs.

I don't rule out anything. The unthinkable has happened time and again over the past five years.

In any case, the PAC will allow Trump to maintain his grip on the party, if they let him. And they will, because the elected officials need money for their campaigns which Trump can supply through the PAC. I think Trump is gearing up for 2024, with either him or one of his children as candidate. Remember, if the dems "cheated", then he didn't actually lose and maintains his political marketability for his voters.

It could be, although I don't think Donald Trump thinks it is.

If there's anything Trump does well, it's find the graft. And there's absolutely graft to be found in becoming the antipresident (like the antipopes). Whether or not the rest of it is real, who knows. Reports coming out of his inner circle indicate that he really believes that he hasn't lost, and it's taking a long time to sink in. That the GOP won't tell him he's lost is rather frightening - the Republicans are abrogating one of the great responsibilities in democracy right now, and it's impossible to blame Donald Trump for it. They're making a choice to weaken the US democracy in order to help get some Senate seats that they'll probably get anyway.

This whole thing is a sad example of how easy it is to dupe those who allow themselves to believe. Just keep telling the lie and your followers will soon do it for you, and will quickly believe it too. Some serious 3rd Reich vibes here.

The republicans are right though that the system is rigged. They just don't admit it's rigged to their advantage.

So it seems Trump is exchanging top personell of the Pentagon? WTF is going on, America?

This is exactly what I’m thinking.

I don't rule out anything. The unthinkable has happened time and again over the past five years.
And this.

Can somebody please explain why we’re wrong and worry too much?

The military has always stayed out of civilian affairs in the U.S. except in cases where civilian authorities call in the National Guard. The military code also requires them to disobey illegal orders. And don’t forget that Trump has fired many generals and repeatedly said he knows more than they do, called soldiers who died for their country “suckers” and “losers”, and has trashed multiple gold star families (families of dead soldiers) for speaking out against him, and at least lightly blamed some of them for giving him COVID-19. The U.S. military won’t support a coup, especially with this guy at the top.

Shady arms deals to cancel out Trump’s personal foreign debts, on the other hand, is something I would fully expect over the next couple of months. And maybe a complete pullout from Afghanistan for his buddy Vladimir.

If Trump’s still playing make-believe on January 20th, I fully expect the Secret Service to escort him out the door at noon. If they don’t, I’ll go to Washington and protest myself until he leaves, because it’s the end of the republic if he doesn’t.
