#34 - Afraid to Shoot Strangers - ... ... then into an instrumental that words will never do justice to. Its just incredible and breaks free like a bird of prey both hard and marching with the drums and equally amazing and elegant with the melodies  . From there the melody is lost to a great solo then into a fast drum driven pace before being rejoined by Bruce ... ...

Nice !  :ok:

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

So how do you guys expect the top ends of my list to look? shouldnt be too surprising i dont think.
Im looking forward to rounding this thing off in the next 19days

Thanks Foro for your love of my simile and Cried for your sarcasm  ;)  next post tomorrow after college.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

#32 - The thin line Between Love and Hate - A victim of the ever changing top end of my ratings, its shot down for the simple reason its stopped exciting me as much as it did. It sounds edgy with the louder drums with the clear structured singing, the guitar remains great throughout and especially in the sections after the equally amazing chorus. After more verse the rising prayer to heaven of a chorus that really grabs me, its so genuine in its sound... bruce is a bloody good actor sometimes. The following instrumental flows in a wonderous way but the guitar does seems a bit harsh to lead into the soft section at 5:20ish, a light melody between all the instruments leads off like a dream to Bruces more emotional vocal. The highlights are by far the last 3minutes and the chorus' other than that it is a bit too straight and is on its way down.

#31 - Dream of Mirrors - Another BNW track, the first few lines i find a bit abnoqious to dive into the song with but after theyre outta the way an amazing song is hidden. Light guitar lines accompany Bruce on an inward adventure before it builds repeatedly through the dream is true over into the amazing i only dream in black and white POWERFULL vocals improved by a technique used in lord of flies etc of holding back its pace to a point where you wanna go mental but even the chorus feels like suspense and it feels so amazing how it builds within. Another master of suspense, its just so epicly slow in a brilliant way like a massive ship on the sea. It then explodes from the suspense with lost in a dream of mirrors when all the held back energy can escape through that drumline alone. The guitar soloing before the closing lyric rounds off this song in the best imaginable way prior to another slow driving lyric.

#30 - Infinite Dreams - One that used to be a top ten song its sunk but its very comfortable here... maybe a rise soon. Theres melody and light vocal throughout the intro creating an amazingly imaginary sound around itself. The sound comes to like with the power coming into the guitars and crashing drums. Bruce takes us away on his story, it soars into it makes me wonder in a high clarity section cant be all coincidence for me a masterpiece area of writing comes out through here equal in beauty to the instrumental of ATSS. Then as the pace is expected to leave us a Bruce scream dropping from a growl to a more emotional moan to suit the theme of the song perfectly leads into melodies weaving in and out carrying us on a theological rollercoaster through the characters mind and its truly mesmerising.

Album #7 - Piece of Mind -
album04_pom_a_small.jpg

Harkening the arrival of Nicko who introduced an all new foundation to the music that added more driving power along with intricacy that was alot rarer earlier on. With gems like Trooper, WED, Revelations, TTAL and Still Life all doing pretty well on my list only one song lets it down and we all know which that is (hint: it involves a seemingly 65million+year old human civilisation trying to discover fire). This makes for a very consistent album that ties together really well and is in many ways one of their best. Strange thing is it always seems to be the album that comes to mind last...

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

4 of them are, 2 from your prediction will be dispelled with tomorrow    ;)
i dont like to be too predictable.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Dang! I had a good feeling I'd guess at least 7. Oh well...

All will be revealed when you enter the top ten.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

I'm shit at guessing (here anyway!), so won't. It's been an interesting list & I look forward to the climax.

I suppose it must be kinda hard in the 20's & 30's as loads of really decent stuff just gets pushed this far out by the superb material you have to rate in your top 10 or 20. I suppose I'd probably have InfDreams where you have it. Good, but many are better. ThinLine is also pretty good, but I might have it lower. Anything off of BNW I can't get that excited about; maybe I need to listen to it a lot more, but much of it falls flat, for me, in comparison to AMoLaD & TFF, and much else before.

Looking back at your whole countdown there are some real eye openers. Here's my highlights...

#44 - Alexander the Great
#46 - Children of the Damned
#51 - Aces High
#56 - Caught Somewhere in Time
#66 - Wrathchild
#67 - Flight of Icarus
#69 - To Tame a Land
#75 - Stranger in a Strange Land
#82 - The Duellist
#83 - Sea of Madness
#88 - The Clairvoyant
#95 - Man on the Edge
#96 - Back in the Village
#107 - The Man Who Would be King
#108 - The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
#111 - Flash of the Blade
#121 - Futureal
#129 - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
#131 - Die With Your Boots on
#137 - Ghenghis Khan

We are all indeed, rivetted! Without thinking too much about it, I suspect there must be a few pretty crud tracks jumping around up here in the dizzy heights of the top 29!  :D

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

#29 - Blood Brothers - The best live song of recent times, always introduced to perfect effect by bruce unifying us all. beginning lightly but soon to the call of heavy drumming and bass that runs brilliantly through this track it begins were blood brothers. between these calls theres images set that are pretty similar to that of children of the damned in my opinion in the way theyre set out and work well dropping to a dark theme behind the eruptions of the chorus. the solos carry it up with the brilliant instrumental at 3:26, with the pace of the song it adds some splendour before returning to the more withheld light guitar work. Also in this area the drums and bass give an idea of a darkness making that lighter guitar seem more unsettling. I love how they can so brilliantly use instruments to bring a thought or a feeling.

#28 - For the Greater Good of God - the intro to the dark bass lines and drums contrasts massively with the thoughtful guitar and light voice of Bruce bringing more imagery relating to wether religion has a place in war, it continues harshening in tone to that massive point where all the instruments rush into life. one guitar weaves around while most take a darker tone. The drums drive the whole thing and Bruce lays down more than enough ideas on the subject to keep your mind busy. Its structure however is very repetetive which would normally be a negative until it reaches the area for the greater good of god with some brilliant guitar work around and then drum crashing into the soloing section which warbles away perfectly before re-entering the grand pacing of the for the greater good of gods then rounding off with a thoughtful section as it started.

#27 - The Trooper - A classic but a freakin good one, theres nothing more iconic than that artwork and the intro to the song dumdumdu-du-du-du-dudumdum... its filled with energy and patriotism and distinctive throughout for its guitar melodies and story  with imagery like ill run you through somehow sounding like the most enjoyable experience ever. In the live show the flag and costume only makes it more clear how much of a central song this is to the catalogue and really really really fun.
The current 3part harmony in the guitars and Bruces highnotes make the whole thing sound like a battle charge.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Hmmm, so-so. Can't say I think the first two are anything special. But I suppose one can't argue with where you place them. The Trooper I'd have a little higher.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

#26 - Age of Innocence - I love this song, its not got enough to put it toward the top ten but from the start it has a really grand feeling with a mysterious undertone almost like an old James Bond title track. Bruce begins telling an amazing tale, anti-political statements and distrust in the world. Then the perfect chorus, Sometimes them exploring different ways to write really works as it doesnt sound instantly maiden but this song is a true piece of art. Its not complex but it doesnt have to be with Bruce taking over with his soaring and overall important lyrics putting over common views. It drops into darker part you gotta protect yourself, even in your own home, they have more rights than us, how can you call that just... it really is a masterpiece for me dealing with so many thoughts i have around 'the system' and still rising in my ratings.                                                               And Nicko's versions hilarious too  :P

#25 - Holy Smoke - OK, i promise no more NPFTD    But this is completely incredible. For me the climax of the antiestablishment writing at that time... Another song thats here purely because of its interesting punky vibe but presented in a Maiden way that adds a true sense of humour into the mixture with disturbing images nazi looks, crocodile smiles suitably to the song bringing an image of Hitler with a cheshire cat grin dressed as the pope              ...yeh ok     Its just one of the only songs that really puts across that they were having fun, until the big downturn this harkened in but ahhh well. I i ever need cheering up this is the one to do it.
I could go blindly into explaining my view on every metaphor in the thing but instead im just gunna say the solos in it fit amazingly.

#24 - Fear of the Dark - On the album its barely listenable as it hasnt got ANY of the emotion and atmosphere as in the live experience which must be why they play it all the time. No other songs benefit from the live environment as much as this, the crowd are 70% of the performance while the stage show and Bruces enactment of the story in his posturing all add. the slow plucking intro resonates creating a dark and open sound reflecting on the man being alone. Bruces intro leads us into the fast paced, dark, drum driven soar of the song. The pace then slows for the chorus creating a perfect headbanging rythm and then the woah-oah section that only really means anything live, becoming a really emotional part of the song prior to the instrumental carrying all of that away into the song again. For me this song was written for audience participation because without it the whole atmosphere of the latter 80% of the song is lost and even though its so commonly played its always toward the top of the songs im excited to hear live.
Then a nice outro alone again

#26 and #25 are underrated,
By far. They are both great tracks in their subject area and for me show how well they can use those ideas along with Public enema number one...    El dorado does it pretty well too but doesnt quite fit with these songs somehow (its not blatant enough)

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Hmm... AOI is alright but Holy Smoke is in my bottom 5 lol. FOTD is a great song.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

#23 - Satellite 15... The Final Frontier - Im a big fan of Satellite 15, It sounds perfect to intro the album and is distant and echoing giving the impression of deep space (sound doesnt travel in blahbah bbj ::)) and has a heavy industrial feeling akin to a satellite or some great machine, the wailing guitar creates the scifi comicbook feel of fear, horror and anticipation then Bruce in giving it the whole performance and the fearfull point of view of someone stuck out in the void. It has a sense of desperation that intensified every verse in feeling along with the growing drum rythm. I wasnt sure of it live but it was brutal.
Then a little guitar rythm and drum beat into the rocker side of the song, only made better by the intro building it up. It deals with a story a bit better than recent short openers and follows on the lost mood from Sat15 brilliantly but becoming more upbeat. Its filled with brilliant riffs and the solos are incredible... just wow     The pacing of the chorus perfectly suits what we saw in the video and you cant help but imagine a space ship maneuvering to that riff that i liken to the building of G's  :)

#22 - Revelations - Im starting to find it overrated nowerdays, and live it doesnt really do anything for me. It should soon drop to at least below Infinite Dreams.  It begins brilliant and melodic before that drum section into the harsher area of the song where the guitars and bass run away back to a slow melody for Bruce to bring over a really amazing lyric section that is gentle and with thought but creeps into a harsher sound the secret of the hangman... then another heavy few sections before returning to the structure of the gentle lyrics. It continues like this until the instrumental section which is brilliant with the drums creating a brilliant pace and atmosphere with the bass to allow the guitars to fly off and the result is that the guitars are a bit ott for me but it all comes together to a much better rythm before rejoining Brucey and the original beat.    Lyricaly i think its insane. it is so cryptic and filled with mad imagery while having a beauty of a note while for me the instruments dont step up the mark causing it to drop short (also the song structures a bit too repetetive and not for the better)

#21 - Wasted Years - A great song, high starting riffs with the bass peeking in and then probably the first of their advisory tracks to the 10 commandments of the church of Iron Maiden. It has a great message and all parts hold their own considering its so short. The bass has some good parts building up the song, the drums drive it all the way through. Theres as much iconic guitar work here as anywhere else and the soloing is freaking amazing after being introduced by more dragged notes just so we knew what was coming before it soared away. And then bruce is at a great form so i can look past that SiT vocal sound im not such a fan of  :)

Album #6 - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son -
Seventh-Son-Of-A-Seventh-Son.jpg

As far as im concerned not the best opened with Moonchild but in such an experimenting time it was to be expected and just gives a feel of how they were transforming. Then infinite dreams, can i play with madness, the evil that men, the clairvoyant...  all standout songs and lift the album up.  The album retains massive complexity in the music while also showing a wonderous mystical sound which seems to be somewhat of a theme with many songs having a theme based around a greater power or mystics.
The melodies are amazing, the drums and bass dont take as much control here and Bruceys at his best. 7.64
