How do I obtain Powerslave shoes?
interesting you should ask, you must complete a series of seven tasks, first you must learn to fly as that skill will prove essential. Then you must work 23:58 hours for a corrupt businessman while avoiding flying bullets where possible. After all that you can take a quick break as i predict youll be lost for words, however you must then compete through a series of intense sword fights and fencing with Dr Bruce Dickinson himself before returning to the village of your birth. Here you shall rise to supreme power and sit as a god amongst men in the local community before it all collapses when your family sells you out and you must sail away into the distance as a crewmember on a rather ill prepared ship, a stupid sailor will decide it a good idea to shoot a helpless albatross all because of some fog (wuss) and then your soul will fly away from you and there your story ends (bet you really wished you rememberred you learned to fly huh?).                Your shoes will be delivered to your adress but of course you have perished in earning them and so your next of kin, not understanding the lengths you went to sells them for £5 on a local carboot sale.

Alternatively you could go to the shops/ online and buy them, if you dont want an adventure then of course i cant convince you. Heres a link http://www.skateparkoftampa.com/spot/p.aspx?ID=22935
Anyway lets get on with the countdown now... and as i feel i can use this as my personal news thread i have, well. SOME NEWS!!!
My dad works at alpha catering at Manchester Airport and he only went and catered for Ed Force One today  :edmetal:, Incase anyone is interested its still in full livery so i imagine they havent found a window to respray the big guy.

ok onward and upward
#5 - Starblind - It sounded from the off like something great was about to happen with rising harmony carrying bruce to start with the images creeping in. a crunching riff takes over and then into another level of building the song, the guitars are strong and create a complex texture with sounds mixed together like a pickn'mix of brilliant heavy sounds and springing melody all the while bruce building his story let the elders to their parlay and building an idea of religion often being misused and so holding us back. then out comes the solo where Bruce sounds distant and strangely the guitars seem to be the most frontal attack in the chorus and that actually works amazingly with the brilliant moving strange sounds covering and continuing through for a long time, a powerful synthy sound builds the songs emotion along with bruce through the crucible of pain will forge.... The song continues to describe this moving away from the direct worship of a diety and instead making the most of singular human experience while we have it and not waste your hours. A view that sits very well with me personally.       At 4:07 a brilliant jazzy solo begins that suits the feeling brilliantly and is really unique in its sound to me as is this entire song, The guitars are emotional before leading into that distant spaceage melody for the bass building back to the story and ends on the message of the story you are free to choose a life to live or one thats left to lose

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

I loved Starblind! It's about 11 for me, just makes out of my top 10. I love your take on the song, by the way I'm learning to fly as we speak.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Thats the first task on its way, you will soon have the shoes of power

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Shit! They're out of stock; whit am I gonna do...

Great choices Tron! I really, really like The Legacy. The chorus is probably not to everyone's liking (a little upbeat, you might say) --but the early guitar work is really nice; a real different sound from Maiden. I'd like to put it in my top 10 too, if I had one.

LoL is okay; not sure I'd have it quite so high.

I'm quite reticent about placing TFF tracks at present, but Starblind is lovely. Thematically it strikes a chord with me. And, unlike older Maiden, the songwriting really does seem more sincere, more mature, and more honest. I'm not saying Maiden of old wasn't this too --but sometimes songs thematically were either fantastic (SSoaSS) or quite theatrical (FotD: the track). I like this, but now they have something else too --a real seriousness.

Do i really have to repeat the quest?  ::)

I would agree about what you said on their style post reunion. They do have a much more mature sound as opposed to upbeat heavy metal anthems we now more frequently get all that musical talent but only doing what it needs to as theyve all gained such an understanding of the music. They create more feeling and the stories as you say are much more serious and have (with exceptions that can be identified from my list) much more content than previous. The sound evolved very quickly on the approach to DoD into a clearly mature band creating masterpieces and still having their characteristic sense of humour. Thats why i love the band, they live it and never lose themselves in the band, simply they do it for the music and im going off track

#4 - Dance of Death - Starblind pushed past it but this pushed him back down. That orchestral feel of DoD at its best, smoothly moving into a tale that invites you in like a panto similarly to Fear of the Dark or El Dorado. A very descript story it is as the pace of the music patters on you can image a pretty unibriated guy getting dragged off by occultists and stumbling upon a ritual. The sound thumps away as the character becomes lost in the emotions and spirituality of the gathering (who cares if he prances, hes drunk and having a semi religious experience/ equivalent being if bruce told you personally to prance, you prance  ). A light plucking melody of a dance leads into the most amazing area of music yet in my countdown, drums move in with guitars and bass moving around as the character begins to fear and then a massive rush of power into as i danced with the dead.... The lines following have kicked my ass live 3times with pulsing drums, guitars making the perfect headbanging melody and Bruce soaring above all.
The character then flees this ritual of hell and runs like hell into the soloing giving a pace to his run from the beast and its some insanely good guitarwork aswell into the broad powerful melody of the song (or the woahoahoahoah section) and another crazy solo  :edmetal:, Bruce rejoins in similar voice as the powerful section before to add depth to the story when you know that your time has come around you know youll be prepared for it. Then a dancing repetetive section into a fast final sprint and ill never go dancing no more til i dance with the dead  fun, powerful, great story, beer, satanic ritual and great live

Album #2 - The Final Frontier -
the-final-frontier-cover.jpg

Looks like Night Prowler called it  ;). The first release i fully experienced was always going to be very special and what a release it was, it was beautifully orchestrated and from that first countdown (before they went countdown mad) i was pumped for the final frontier. El dorado was amazing and showed the change in direction they had chosen and reproducing a very mystical sound while retaining some of that huge power (in places) that crept in with the former two albums. The final frontier itself was a typical DoD+ opener, punchy and preachy  :P with a cool video for maiden (kicks different world and wildest dreams' cgi asses). Satellite 15 improves the opening track massively for me, Mother of mercy is a more straight war track and changes from their mindset of warsongs always being huge epics and tests that out. Coming Home is a little gem giving us an insight to Bruces mind on tour. The epics i love IoA, Talisman, Starblind and WTWWB have massive variety with the first being light, wondorous and brilliant to cheer you up the second a thumbing titan of an oceanic tale, the third a huge religious critique to jazzy melody and the last a huge prog peice on the horrors of nuclear war.
Only Alchemist and TMWWBK drop below expectations for me, the first being overenergetic for its placement and really not fitting and the later feeling empty of story line, imagery or explination for its size. These barely damage the album though but do dump it at 2nd with 8.5
A year and a bits enough for this to settle down and im comfortable with where it is now.
I can only be thankful for this album, ive had 2years of excitement thanks to it, a realease, a tour, another tour and now the craving for more and a brilliant start to my following maiden after just listening on my mp3 for years
So here we are with 3 more to go, its been a long road but were getting there. Any predictions and i hope youve all enjoyed my countdown  :ok:

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Those few last ones were great choices! DoD - a agree with you completely.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Cool countdown, very strong numbers here.

Predictions? OK there are three left: Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Paschendale and The Talisman.

3. The Talisman
2. Paschendale
1. Rime Of The Anceint Mariner

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Dance of Death is awesome one of my favourites too! Awesome list but with a few blasphemies here and there :P :ok:

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Tron, I am totally digging your reunion era heavy countdown. Breeg and The Longest Day, DOD and a bunch of other new songs...very, very cool. Only tonight I was telling a guy about Maiden's millennial  renaissance. He was stuck in the golden years.

Maiden last ten years are a big part of my existence on this planet. \m/

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

On Maiden's musical maturity, as discussed, --for me DoD really doesn't fit here. It's very theatrical --very in the FotD mould. And although, unlike FotD, it's very good both on the album & live (FotD is really only the song it is because of it's live version, I feel) --I don't think it merits being up in the top five, personally. In straight comparison, I'd say (since Tron has them up here) Longest Day & Breeg are better. Do you not feel that, despite it taking your fancy (& it is thematically very nerdy, boyish, and sort of bookish), "the occult" is really just pretentious crap --& that, thematically, it's not particularly mature? It's all a bit NotB. (This is really polemic --as I personally like this fantasy element to Maiden.)

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

while i enjoy the maturity but not just it, i like how this works as a hybrid... on the surface it has its tongue in cheek dancing and prancing and one drink but no more honestly officer. but then behind the scenes that higher thought matches the music to every emotion our character has and lifts the emotion and power WAY up to unashamedly be my favourite live song and also in its own way while being fun still being mature...  mature doesnt always mean straight thoughtfull, while thats touching this is straight out thumping emotional fun but i suppose it counts on your take on it. i in no way see a problem with the story being cheesy or anything and instead see it as a creatively out there story which only adds to its intrigue (i mean who else would ever write that song).

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

#3 - Paschendale - THE maiden war masterpiece, i remember someone (i think perun) to longest day being a detached view onto the war while Paschendale feels like being right in the trenches and i couldnt agree more. After the intro the guitars and drums hit like grenades and again after let me tell you bout his years, the pace turns to a driving melody sounding like a struggle onward with Bruce creating the scene of a bloof filled trench, bloody tomb, killing time about to begin and fully expecting to die join my dead friends soon/no chance to live. It all creates a huge terrifying atmosphere around the grand swaying melodies and turns the soldiers into creatures of war in this situation and still fighting onward.
The instrumental moves in in that distant crying guitar and then a heavy crushing section into more desperate lyrics before they go over the top to the cry of an eagle (more powerful image than a crow). Out comes the most amazing guitar section  :blush:it breaks away and throws us into a huge wailing, sweeping solo and then another and im in musical heaven, while it is the adrenaline leading into the true horror of war. blood is falling like the rain then more imagery of cannon fire, barbed wire and running blind into enemy lines before our character is left to die alone i choke i cry, feel the blood go down my throat in no mans land.
Then the best ending i coulve imagined for such an epic, the fallen soldiers spirits being free once more from the horrors of war.

Re: Tron's Maiden Countdown!

Great track. Not sure if it would make my top 10 though. Maybe.
[You'd better get this rounded up Tron, what with the big guns rolling out their countdowns!  ;)]
