Keep in mind I'm skimming the commentary threads, not the entire boards, and you haven't commented on every song, not by a longshot. I have no doubt something you've said will end up in there eventually! Lots of appreciation for the rhythm section on this particular track, the instrumental seems well praised. A fair few people have drawn comparisons to early power metal, and pointed out that several power metal covers have been performed. Very few people love this track, most say it is pretty good-to-good, and the result is that it has a snug deviation of 0.6 (the second lowest deviation of tracks that have been ranked since 2004 we've yet seen). This oe is going to stay stable for a long time to come, likely hovering just below the eights.

Choice comments:

This was never one my favorite songs on Powerslave, but it's still a pretty good song. I really like the intro and the harmony part, but it doesn't have any solos or anything.

If the album is called Fillerslave for this song, one needs to review their concept about Iron Maiden and if really know what this band is all about.

The actual song itself has some nice harmonies and I don't mind too much how Bruce sings the chorus. Has a pretty cool instrumental section though. Just slightly up from Losfer Words in my view

It's energetic and fun, probably underrated, and I should listen to it more often. That being said, however, Maiden have a lot of rockers, and this is not among the best.

Nice intro riff. Nice instrumental part. Corny chorus. Lyrics are akin to kill-the-dragon power metal stuff, which i really don't like. Filler.

Flash of the Blade really is one of the precursors to Power metal. Great cover by Rhapsody.

Oh, the bass is fantastic, so is some of the guitar work, but I'm a stickler for vocals. If I don't like the melody or the lyrics, I just can't like a song. Unfortunately, Bruce tanks this one.

The musicianship on display here is awesome. This isn't a performance many bands could pull off. I love all the contrapuntal intricacies, and Bruce shows off his full vocal range. Damn shame it never got played live. I can understand leaving this beast off the regular rotation, but I'd love to hear it on a live album.

I also love the way the bass interacts with the guitar during the second time through the intro. Steve's bass in general is really great on this track, as always.

This is actually the first song from The Final Frontier to not get all five Top 100 awards it was eligible for, yet it is ranked higher than the two preceeding tracks, Satellite 15... The Final Frontier and The Man Who Would Be King. It manages this by losing out in the 2012 Head to Head tournament, which seems to give me an idea that some people may prefer some songs greater than others when matching them up. Curious if we should consider another Iron Maiden song tournament soon. Any ideas? Anyway, the opinions of this one have been remarkably stable with our smallest deviation yet. @bornless1, you've been quoted!

Choice comments:

Okay here is my [as I listen] take on Mother Of Mercy: This song most reminds me of AMOLAD. Not just because of the soldier tie in. It has a darker, meaner sound than the others on FF. But oh man. It rocks. Bruce is scolding us brilliantly. That chorus is unreal. I had lower expectations for Mother', man I think this one has it all. I love it. "Taking my last breath of fire!!" Dio style rockin-outro.

Very good song. Although BRuce struggles a bit too hard in the chorus. I think he should have spent a few more takes on it.

It's a Montsegur for me, good tune, good feel and everything, but emotionally and thematically seems to be out of step with the rest of the album, so for that reason I keep it at the bottom. And while I feel everything on my favorites list is in flux after Isle of Avalon, I can't imagine this one will climb up that high on my favorites list.

In terms of lyrics, its not hard to draw parallels between MoM (haha, mom) and The Aftermath or Fortunes of War. AMOLAD also gets a shoutout in terms of the general theme of soldiers and war since that was a central theme in the last one. However, it is still unique because here the soldier is seeking a way out, which is a central theme of this album it seems (seeking in general, not for a way out specifically although it resurfaces in The Man Who Would Be King). Also in terms of melodies, it has some of the melancholy that I would associate with the general feel of The X Factor.

Anyway, I love the chorus on this one. A lot of people I've talked to dislike it, but I love how Bruce wails this heartfelt melody out over that sinister chromatic chord progression. This song also has Adrian all over it, which is never a bad thing.

This mini-The Longest Day or mini-Paschendale loses a mark for the fact a second solo could have easily been squeezed in. Apart from that a rip roaring track.

I like everything but the chorus. Seems like a pretty stock Maiden song, nothing terribly special yet also not awful or anything. Just a little bland.

I must admit that the chorus sounds very... I don't know how to explain it. Forced, strained and poorly thought-out at the same time. It's not horrible, but it just feels like they had trouble coming up with something here. In fact, the chorus of this song may well be my least favourite moment on the album.
