Having long reviews in spoiler tags is convenient because of the length, IMO.
Ya, I see what you mean Mosh.

OMG! I read the review and my excitement level has really sky rocketed! If that was even possible. I'm going just insane about hearing the album! OMG!!!

And we are finally just 2 weeks away from Speed Of Light!!!

I got it in my book at 120. I can not say more than that. The phrasing is made under 120 bpm, that, I am certain. Go check by yourself with a metronome and give me a feedback !

The problem is you wouldn't count it at 120. Try counting along with the song, Nicko's snare hits should be on 2 and 4.

Really? So you count Nicko's snare hits in the fast part as being on the "&'s"? Doesn't make sense like that mate. It's meant to be counted in double time.
Sorry, I was first on Songsterr to prove my point, but now I am back home and got my official book, it goes from 160 the intro to 252 for the rest. So you were right !

I'm getting some serious Savatage or Blind Guardian vibes from the description of Empire of the Clouds. After all, it mentions that the song has both piano and orchestral parts. Should be fantastic!

Blind guardian have choruses with like 20 channels of backing vocals and layers over layers of stuff, kind of overproduced. But yes, you mean something like And then there was silence ?

Yeah, I doubt the vocal melodies would be that exaggerated, but the general sense of scope of And Then There Was Silence was what I had in mind. Either that or something like Gutter Ballet by Savatage.

Oddly enough, I keep picturing some weird blend of the title track off of Tyranny of Souls and Starblind or The Sign of the Cross for If Eternity Should Fail.

Now that Iron Maiden have pushed the progressive stuff and now opened the door to orchestral stuff, I think that maybe their path will be like Blind Guardian, going more and more toward an orchestral direction. It opens a new dimension to what can be expected for the albums following TBOS.

Possibly! Obviously, part of it would have to come down to whether or not they'll make any more albums after The Book of Souls or not. It sounds like this album's also a bit darker than The Final Frontier was, so there might be other musical elements on the album that pave the way they'll go from here (if we get more new music from them).

I will say though, since it seems that Empire of the Clouds is a very cinematic song, I have a feeling we might get to see it played live after all. Especially if it gets a good reception from the fan-base upon release. A full-on metal opera like that would probably offer Bruce and the band a huge opportunity to do some new theatrical stuff a la Paschendale or Dance of Death.

Spectacular review!!

Earlier this week I vowed not to listen to teasers or singles and not read any reviews or interviews prior to 4 September. And now...ive just spent a full 24 hours hanging out with our new "29 second little friend". I took him everywhere yesterday and listened to him about 50 times. I've printed out the Janick interview and the album review so they are by my side for repeated reads. Talk about no will power!!

What is funny is that for me, the most cinematic songs are Rime and Where eagles dare, and those songs dont need much orchestration to be cinematic, I just close my eyes listening to those two songs and a movie starts playing in my mind

I doubt anything short of a single could have gotten me more pumped than that review did.
As for clip, I hear the instrumental breakdown in Gates of Tomorrow — not the guitar melody specifically, just in the tempo and the style.

I don't think there's going to be too much orchestral parts backing up Empire anyway. More than we're used to for Maiden, but I don't know if it'll reach Blind Guardian's exact levels. Just from that sense of scale and general mindset. That's why I could also see it sounding similar to say Savatage. :)

Wow,I slept for 6 hours and there is too much to take in from this thread.

1) Great review but it seems to be a bit exaggerated.

2) So the fastest Maiden song is Purgatory?!

Of course it's exaggerated, the early ones often are. That said, it still gives us a better idea of what the album will be like and we can get a better idea of what the album highlights are (i.e. If Eternity Should Fail, the title track, Empire of the Clouds and maybe The Red and the Black).

Or Maiden could think to themselves that they've gone as progressive as they wanted to and decide to try and please the fans that want another album full of mostly short, fast rockers and do something like 2 songs over 8 minutes and keep the rest under 6. If TBOS ends up being as amazing and incredible as I'm hoping for, I'll actually be fine with a simpler album the next time around. I probably won't feel the need for another similar album. Then again, I could love it so much that it will leave me craving more of the same. We shall see!

My thoughts too!
