Swine Flu

They purchased regular influenza vaccinations, which are of no use against the current virus - they don't immunize.  Some people were getting the same vaccine twice...

Ah-ha!  I didn't realize that.  Aside from being a waste, don't they usually recommend against having the flu-shot too often; like it may make you sick?

Mhm, it's still not a particularly deadly pandemic.  It's a mildly irritating one that causes death mostly in the unhealthy, very young, and very old.

And WHO explicitly stated that the threat level only refers to its ease of spreading, not its lethality.  Here, no new measures are being taken.

And instead of mocking about spending energy and money on it, we should be glad that this is the quickest discovered pandemic in world history.

By the way, it's very unusual that it also spreads under so many young people. In the past, mostly the old were infected.

Not really.  Flus are traditionally spread by the young, as the young (schoolchildren, playmates, etc) are less likely to be sanitary while having an exposure to dozens, or hundreds of people daily.  It is the old it affects - their grandparents and so on.  The old mostly die of the flu, but it is younger people who suffer it.

To me, while this strain is still very dangerous, aside from the season in which it is spreading, I see no difference between it and a normal flu strain.  However, since it is discovered, we should be keeping an eye on it in case a more lethal strain develops.

Some translations of articles I recently read in Dutch press (and seen on Dutch TV). I especially find the part about the year 1957 an interesting trivium:

In this year's fall, the Mexican Flu (= Swine Flu) can cause 5 til 10 more deadly victims than a normal "flu-wave".

One out of three Dutchmen can get the Mexican flu. According to the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment the chance is that the deathtoll can rise towards 8000.

The Ministry of Health says that this scenario is the ultime doomscenario, when the virus will mutate.

People who are born before 1957, seem to be immune for the H1N1-virus. According to Professor Doctor Roel Coutinho (from the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) it seems that until 1957 a similar virus travelled through our land and that the Dutchmen from before this year have built up a natural resistance.

After the summer it is expected that the flu will hit our country harder than now.

Today our Minister of Health ordered 34 million of vaccines against the Mexican Flu. With this our whole population can (if needed) be injected twice. He finds it important that the vaccine has to be as effective as possible and can be delivered quickly. The vaccines should be available at the end of the year, the latest.

I am not sure how theoretical this comparison with the pre-1957 flu is, though. I guess they were able to compare well. Sounds hopeful for people who are (currently) over 51/52.

Apparently here in the UK, parents are holding Swine Flu parties for their kids in the hope that they catch it now while its in mild form, and form some immunity to it later this year when its predicted to be more potent.

They better watch that episode of South Park, where the parents end up with herpes when the kids found out what they did to them.

Two studies in Science show that Swine Flu is more severe than seasonal flu.

Well, the scientific proof was delivered yesterday. And seriously, some forummers didn't expect it (and said the contrary: read back this topic if you like).    Besides: I thought that picture was funny.
